Decentralisation Could be the Key

Introduction

Around the world there are dozens of vast buildings that hum relentlessly — day and night. From the outside they look pretty unremarkable, just nondescript warehouses surrounded by security fences and security personnel. But inside buildings like these, there are thousands of servers tirelessly processing data, spinning the artificial intelligence web that has become intertwined with our daily lives.

These buildings are data centres, the beating heart of powerful AI technology models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. While this type of technology is quickly blowing away the internet as the most important advancement of the modern age, offering unprecedented convenience and capabilities, they come with a hefty, often invisible, environmental price tag.

Thirsty Machines

Generating just 100 words using advanced AI models like GPT-4 can consume the equivalent of three bottles of water

Typing a simple query into an AI chatbot might seem inconsequential, yet as an article by Tom’s Hardware points out, generating just 100 words using advanced AI models like GPT-4 can consume the equivalent of three bottles of water. (For those scratching their heads with the connection, water is used to cool the servers in data centres, preventing them from overheating as they handle massive computational loads).

This concerning number only grows worse if you factor in development; training a single large AI model such as Chatgpt-3 uses over 700,000 litres of water — which is enough to fill over 4,600 household bathtubs. This number becomes even more alarming when you consider that with hundreds of tech companies and research institutions worldwide racing to advance AI capabilities, hundreds of large models are being trained continually. The total number then amounts to tens of millions of litres of water used each year solely for AI training — a volume comparable to the annual water consumption of thousands of households, (not including the amount needed to refine said models and actual usage). This cumulative consumption intensifies the competition for water resources, especially in regions already facing scarcity; local communities are finding themselves competing with these digital giants for a resource that’s fundamental to life, underscoring the urgent need for more sustainable AI practices.

A Crisis of Energy

In 2023 alone, the reported energy consumed by data centres worldwide was roughly 200 terawatt-hours — comparable to the annual electricity consumption of some mid-sized countries.

It’s not just water that is under threat either, as a recent Washington Post article revealed the startling fact that generating the same single 100-word AI response can also consume as much as 0.14 kilowatt-hours of electricity, equal to running 14 LED light bulbs for an hour. Plus the data centres themselves — which run 24/7 — require enormous amounts of actual power to operate their high-performance servers alongside the water needed to cool them. Indeed in 2023 alone, the reported energy consumed by data centres worldwide was roughly 200 terawatt-hours — comparable to the annual electricity consumption of some mid-sized countries. The issue becomes even more pronounced when considering projections; a report by Goldman Sachs predicts that by 2030, the energy demand from new AI data centres will grow by 160%.

This rapid expansion and ever-increasing power demands not only poses a real threat to local communities, but has also raised concerns about the sustainability of AI growth. Experts warn that the energy grid — already under stress from a variety of factors including increased electric vehicle usage and climate change — might not be able to keep up.

Industry Efforts Toward Sustainability

The good news is that there are many ways that a countermeasure can be achieved, with the first being to make AI itself part of the solution. As highlighted in a recent Tech Brew article, AI has the potential to optimise grid operations, manage congestion, and even predict the output of renewable energy sources like wind and solar. For example, it can help balance the grid by rerouting power during peak demand or shifting non-urgent computational tasks to times when renewable energy is more plentiful, giving back some of the energy taken by AI.

Many companies themselves (Including some of the heavy hitters) are also taking steps to mitigate the environmental impact of AI technology. Google has been using its DeepMind AI to improve data centre efficiency, reducing cooling costs by up to 40% and showcasing how AI can lower energy consumption on a large scale. Meanwhile, independent companies are doing their part. Xylem in the UK for example, is employing AI-powered solutions to optimise water infrastructure, reducing water loss and improving distribution efficiency.

Research institutions are doing their part too. MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory has developed techniques like power-capping and early stopping during training, which can cut energy use by up to 80%. They have also created a tool to match AI models with the most suitable hardware, reducing energy consumption during inference by 10–20%. Additionally, research at Harvard is exploring methods like “mixture of experts,” which activates only necessary parts of large models, further reducing the resources needed for training. The bad news is that whilst these efforts are commendable and a great start, by themselves they aren’t likely to be enough to offset the mounting issues, and a more fundamental change is required to make a true difference.

The Decentralised AI Solution

Thankfully, there is an option that has the power to drastically reduce AI’s environmental footprint: the adoption of decentralised AI platforms. Traditional AI relies on these aforementioned massive, centralised data centres to process and store vast amounts of data — in contrast decentralised AI distributes these tasks across a network of smaller, geographically dispersed nodes. This model not only reduces the need for large, power-hungry facilities but also makes better use of existing resources.

NetMind.AI is one of the pioneers in this emerging space, offering a decentralised AI platform that leverages idle GPU resources from all around the world. By tapping into underutilised computing power, NetMind.AI’s platform reduces the need for new data centres and, consequently, the energy and water required to cool them. Additionally, because decentralised AI can operate closer to the data source, it cuts down on the energy costs associated with data transfer and storage. An added bonus is that those supplying the computational power the companies training AI on can earn NMT tokens, which can be exchanged for fiat money, creating a lucrative earning opportunity.

As decentralised platforms become more frequent, it is possible that they could be integrated with renewable energy sources. For example by distributing AI workloads to GPUs located in areas with abundant solar or wind power, they can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of AI operations in general. This flexible, location-independent model optimises energy use as well as creates a sustainable path forward as AI continues to grow in both usage and demand.

Are We Entering a New Era of AI? How OpenAI’s Latest O-1 Models and Agentic AI are Leading AI’s Evolution

We explore the groundbreaking potential of OpenAI’s o1 models and Agentic AI, which are helping to usher in a New Golden Age of AI.

Introduction

Unless you’ve been hiding on a desert island over the last week, chances are you’ve heard about OpenAI’s o1-preview and o1-mini models, internally referred to as “Strawberry.” These models, while still in their preview phase, mark a major leap forward in AI’s ability to process and reason through complex, multi-step tasks. Unlike its predecessors, such as GPT-4o — which typically rely on generating rapid responses from large datasets — o1 introduces a novel reasoning mechanism known as chain-of-thought prompting. This method enables the AI to engage in a step-by-step process of problem-solving, improving accuracy and reducing errors like hallucinations (the generation of false or irrelevant information).

In essence this new model is designed to perform more human-like reasoning, handling tasks in fields such as mathematics, chemistry, and coding that require a far higher level of logical thinking. During testing, o1-preview significantly outperformed its predecessors, solving 83% of questions on the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), a dramatic improvement over the previous model’s 13% success rate.

While earlier models like GPT-4o were undeniably powerful and very useful, they often fell short when asked to complete multi-step problems. By contrast, o1 thrives in environments where each step builds on the previous one to a compound result, reflecting a more refined and nuanced form of artificial intelligence.

Despite these exciting advancements, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has tempered expectations, noting how, “o1 is still flawed, still limited, and it still seems more impressive on first use than it does after you spend more time with it. But also, it is the beginning of a new paradigm: AI that can do general-purpose complex reasoning.” The second part of this quote is actually the part the standout here and beyond the technical advancements touches on what the release of these new models symbolises — a shift toward AI systems capable of reasoning through complex challenges, which is crucial for advancing artificial general intelligence (AGI). This kind of reasoning is key to creating AI systems that are not only reactive but also capable of forward-thinking problem-solving across a range of domains and verticals. In short, OpenAI’s o1 truly marks the dawn of the next wave of AI, ones that can think more independently and are laying the foundation for a future where AI plays a large role in decision-making and innovation.

A New Era of AI: Potential Applications

With the imminent full release of OpenAI’s new models, there is zero doubt that we are entering the next phase of the advancement curve, where sophisticated AI reasoning opens up a myriad of potential applications across various industries. For example, in healthcare, AI models like o-1 could be used to diagnose complex conditions by analysing multiple variables and patient histories, identifying correlations that humans might miss. In financial services, AI with advanced reasoning could predict market trends by analysing not just historical data but by reasoning about current events and their potential impacts on global markets.

There’s more — like the use of AI in environmental science, with its improved capacity for reasoning and complex understanding, o-1 could model climate scenarios more accurately by incorporating a broader range of variables and predicting long-term impacts of various environmental policies. In the future it might even be able to use reasoning beyond current human comprehension to predict events we currently have no control over, such as earthquakes. (Not so fun fact: scientists have never accurately predicted an earthquake, ever).

In short, the possibilities are almost endless and pretty much every sector through to its smallest subsections could benefit from this enhanced reasoning and chain of thought processing that models such as o-1 possess.

Beyond Open AI: Agentic AI is Coming

As AI becomes more capable of reasoning, the next frontier in its development will almost certainly be autonomous, agentic systems. This is where platforms like NetMind XYZ come into play. NetMind XYZ is an innovative platform for developing and deploying AI agents that can act independently or in cooperation with other agents to complete complex tasks.

Unlike single-function models — which are designed to solve one problem at a time — agentic AI can interact with multiple agents, share information, and learn collaboratively. This creates a form of collective intelligence that is far more powerful than individual models working in isolation and allows them to build on previous findings, share information, adapt and evolve together.

The platform’s vision extends beyond isolated agents too; it introduces an AI ecosystem where agents contribute to a collective society. This “AI Society” enables agents to evolve and optimise their behaviours over time, facilitating continuous learning and task generalisation. By enabling cooperation and competition among AI entities, NetMind XYZ is laying the groundwork for a new generation of AI solutions that are more flexible, adaptive, and capable of managing increasingly complex tasks without the need for human oversight.

In terms of actual application, the fact that agentic AI can learn and adapt allows them to be dynamic with real-time situations, such as managing disaster relief efforts as they evolve, enhancing cybersecurity by detecting and responding to threats autonomously, or optimising global supply chains by auto-adjusting inventory and logistics across multiple regions. In essence, agentic AI has the power to truly transform industries by creating highly efficient, self-coordinating systems that address complex global challenges with minimal human intervention.

If nothing else, one thing is clear: a brave new world is coming, one that will change everything we know about technology and advancement, and companies like OpenAI and NetMind.AI will be leading the charge.

Join the AI Discussion at the 2024 AGI Odyssey Symposium

As AI dives headfirst into this new era of mind-blowing complexity and eye-watering capability, it’s becoming ever-more important to stay informed about the latest developments and explore their potential implications, and AGI Odyssey Symposium — taking place on October 10, 2024, in the prestigious Royal Institution of Great Britain, London, could be just the ticket.

The full-day event offers a unique opportunity to engage with the think tanks and pioneers of these types of advancements; it will feature keynote speeches and panel discussions from top AI minds from all over the world, as they mull-over the latest breakthroughs and their real-world applications, as well as the all important topic of their ethical implications.

Attendees will have the chance to participate in interactive sessions, network with industry experts, and contribute to shaping the future of AI.

The 2024 AGI Odyssey Symposium is scheduled for October 10th at the Royal Institution in Great Britain in London, and we feel it’s going to not only be a really engaging event, but also a really important one (to get tickets for the 2024 AGI Odyssey Symposium click here). Here’s why:

AI is rapidly evolving, and already we are a bit stuck in the mud when it comes to ethics and responsible application running in parallel to its growth. The negative side of AI — such as deepfakes — are already rearing their ugly head, affecting lives on a catastrophic level, with no real regulations round their use, and sadly showing no signs of slowing down. There is also misuse of celebrity voices, AI being misused to promote specific political and socio-economic propaganda, and advanced algorithms analysing personal consumer data in attempts to exploit behavioural traits for rampant profit-making — and much more besides.

We are entering an AI epidemic and it needs to be discussed.

The symposium — hosted by AGI Odyssey and sponsored by NetMind.AI — will be a pivotal space to hold the candid conversation around AI and its future applications (and implications). The event will see the coming together of a vast array of industry thought leaders, researchers and innovative minds from within the sector; it will also offer everyone in attendance the opportunity to not just listen to, but also directly engage with those at the spearhead of these important conversations. The day will be packed full of discussions around the latest advancements in AI, the very real ethical challenges posed by its rapid development, and what can actually be done to improve the situation as AI continues its rapid journey towards general intelligence.

The Perfect Venue and Speakers

Having the Royal Institution of Great Britain (Ri) be the venue for the 2024 AGI Odyssey Symposium wasn’t an arbitrary choice (although most will agree it’s a lovely building) but rather a symbolic one due to its storied history. The Ri was founded in 1799 and has been the site of a dizzying number of groundbreaking scientific discoveries (or announcements of said discoveries), including Michael Faraday’s envelope-pushing work on electromagnetism. It’s also long been a place where science meets public engagement, providing a collaborative environment for the brightest minds to share their discoveries with both the academic community and the general public. As such, it was literally the perfect choice for bringing AI discussions to the public sphere, and echoes the transparency and engagement that the AI topic so desperately needs.

The symposium will feature some of the most brilliant and influential figures working in AI today, hailing from all over the globe and representing some of the most prestigious institutions in the world. A few highlights from the exciting number of experts include Professor Xiaolan Fu from Oxford University, who has key insights in AI innovation and economic development; Professor Mutlu Cukurova from UCL Institution of Education, who will share his expertise on human-AI complementarity in education, and Doctor Mariano Felice, Senior Researcher at the British Council, who will provide critical perspectives on AI language learning. In fact there are too many incredible minds attending to list them all here (plus the full roster can be seen on the event page).

Rewarding Brilliance with GAIC

The GAIC Math 2024 Awards Ceremony is likely to be a standout section of the symposium (and some levity from the deeper discussions!). The winners of this prestigious and tough competition will be celebrated for their unique, thinking-outside-the-box contributions to the field, with their cut of a $100,000 prize pool recognising their efforts. (For those who are unaware, the competition this year tasked participants to develop AI solutions that addressed complex mathematical problems, providing significant real-world implications). The awards ceremony will also unveil the theme for next year’s GAIC, setting the stage for another round of innovative breakthroughs in AI.

Why The Symposium Matters

The 2024 AGI Odyssey Symposium represents a unified space for critical reflection on how AI technologies are reshaping industries, communities, and even democratic processes — for both better and worse. From addressing the ethical dilemmas posed by deepfakes to celebrating the discussing the latest breakthroughs in AI research, the event could well set the bar as a turning point in the discussion of how we approach the future of artificial intelligence.

The symposium — in a sense — also acts as a microcosm too, representing part of a broader commitment to advancing AI responsibly and sustainably — as AI technologies continue to evolve, events like the AGI Odyssey Symposium are crucial for ensuring that we move towards a future where AI serves the greater good, while minimising risks.

For those attending, it’s an unparalleled opportunity to be part of a conversation that will likely shape AI’s role in society for years to come — all tied together with high-quality food, refreshments and plenty of opportunities for networking.

Not a bad deal for £50.

To get tickets for the 2024 AGI Odyssey Symposium click here.

South Korea’s deepfake epidemic shines a light on a larger issue with the potential misuse of AI technology to shape narratives.

Introduction

In her book Deep Fakes and the Infocalypse, Nina Schick — a political commentator and a leading voice on AI — warned:

“ΑΙ has granted humans a new tool by giving machines the power to generate wholly synthetic [or fake] media…We are in the early stages of an AI revolution which will completely transform representations of reality through media.”

Certainly, such dangers are no longer hypothetical, as highlighted in the harrowing recent BBC article that discusses the rampant rise of deepfake pornography within South Korea that targets underage teens. Indeed, the rampant creation and distribution of the malicious material is so bad that President Yoon Suk Yeol has declared it a “national emergency.” These images and videos — which often target minors and are typically created by teenage perpetrators themselves — have been rapidly circulating on social media, especially via Telegram. The discovery of these secret chat groups was linked to many schools and universities in the country, where users uploaded photos of classmates and teachers, which were then turned into explicit deepfakes, ruining lives in the process. This is not only a deeply terrible situation for the victims involved but also another major blow to the messaging app itself, after the recent arrest of its founder, Pavel Durov, amid serious allegations of other illegal activities on the platform.

Tools for Deception

It seems that no one is safe from deepfake manipulation, and those in the public eye are actually more likely to be victims of this insidious AI practice due to their fame. Actresses Scarlett Johansson and Kristin Bell (among many others) have famously had their faces superimposed into explicit videos, demonstrating the deeply personal violations made possible by this technology — and sadly it shows no signs of slowing down.

Of course, whilst deepfakes have gained notoriety through their use in creating explicit content, their potential for abuse extends far beyond pornography. For example, many misleading but entirely convincing videos of public figures, such as Barack Obama have begun to surface over recent years. In the case of the ‘Obama video’ — known as Incident 39 on the AI incidents website — the deepfake of the former President demonstrated the potential for this technology to create entirely fabricated content that is almost indistinguishable from the real thing. This is a very sobering concept when you consider we are talking about the leader of a nation with one of the largest nuclear arsenals in the world.

The Obama video is itself a microcosm for the overall chilling implications of AI misuse: deepfake technology could easily be leveraged by corrupt governments and institutions (or even cybercriminals pretending to be them) to spread misinformation and deception as a form of propaganda to control a populace, or even instigate outright war. Whilst this sounds like a plot from a B-movie, this is unfortunately not a far-fetched idea at all, but a very real and looming risk that could completely erode trust in our institutions or destabilise entire societies.

A Glimpse into a Potential Dystopian Future

The Capture

The BBC’s political thriller, The Capture actually offers up a pretty disturbing example of a future where deepfake tech is weaponised by those in power. The series follows a former soldier who becomes wrapped up in a conspiracy when deepfaked CCTV footage falsely implicates him in a crime. This scenario exemplifies the terrifying potential of deepfakes as tools of control and suppression; if deepfakes can be used to manipulate evidence, control narratives, and eliminate dissent — then how can it ever be possible to discern truth from fiction?

The idea that governments or corporations could use deepfake technology to fabricate evidence and justify actions against individuals or groups is deeply concerning, and this — combined with the potential for media manipulation to be used as a form of warfare or political control — fully encapsulates why there is a critical need for effective AGI governance.

Public Awareness of AGI Governance

In a growing time where seeing (and hearing) is no longer believing, the need for strong, strict governance is crucial. Education and public awareness are critical components of effective AGI governance, as most people simply don’t know how easy it has become to create deepfakes or similar false media. To this end there needs to be better awareness of the potential dangers at a global scale, and the message needs to be shared and pushed by all to ensure the message spreads.

At Global AI Hub, we are committed to addressing challenges such as deepfakes head-on, exploring how Artificial General Intelligence (essentially machines that can think for themselves) can be developed ethically, safely, and for the good of all of us, to help stop negative applications such as deepfakes. In fact, part of our upcoming AGI Odyssey Symposium event in London — which brings industry experts together to discuss AI advancements — will be to educate on how AI can be ethically guided to ensure it benefits everyone as we move ever-closer to artificial general intelligence.

Proactive Measures Mean a Better Future

The rise of deepfake technology — as highlighted by the BBC article and beyond — serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers posed by unchecked AI, and even how it is becoming a problem right now. As AI continues to evolve towards the inevitable AGI point, so too does its massive potential for misuse, making the need for proactive governance more critical than ever.

Without such measures, we risk living in a world where the line between reality and fiction becomes dangerously blurred, just like in The Capture. The good news is that if we can establish good guidelines and continue to push AI development in a more ethical direction, then we can look forward to an exciting future where these technologies contribute positively to our lives in amazing ways, rather than unnecessarily harming them.

After all AI is just a tool, it’s how we use it that matters.

To get early bird tickets for AGI Odyssey’s London October 2024 Symposium event click here

From revolutionising diagnostics to personalising patient care, here’s how AI is treating healthcare to a much-needed evolution.

Overview

“Artificial intelligence holds immense promise for tackling some of society’s most pressing challenges, from climate change to healthcare disparities.”

This quote from Katherine Gorman, Co-founder of Talking Machines, hits the nail on the digital head. AI does indeed hold the potential to be truly transformative (and already is in many ways), perhaps no more so than within the healthcare sector. Indeed, AI’s arrival into the industry — or at least its latest iteration, as it’s been around in one form or another for a while now — is leading to bold and exciting breakthroughs in diagnostics, treatment planning and medicine discovery. With that in mind, we have gathered together some of the most exciting new AI developments within the industry, and the companies driving them.

Key Developments

Google Health AI — a leader in this field, (just like it’s a leader in almost every other sector too) — has made huge strides by developing open-source tools that are transforming healthcare. For example, Google’s Medical Imaging Suite platform supports the development of AI models capable of analysing medical images, allowing researchers and healthcare providers to access and build upon advanced AI models, encouraging collaboration and speeding up innovation in medical diagnostics.

In medicine discovery, companies like Insilico Medicine and Exscientia are leveraging open-source AI research to identify new drug candidates and predict their interactions within the human body — by leveraging AI to sift through massive datasets of biological information, these companies are drastically shortening the time it takes to develop new treatments, making healthcare more responsive to emerging threats.

For imaging and diagnostics, Butterfly Network is legitimately revolutionising the process, with its flagship product, The Butterfly iQ. The iQ is an AI-powered portable ultrasound device that not only enhances image quality and provides automated diagnostics but also connects to other AI-powered apps through its companion smartphone app; this connectivity allows healthcare professionals to access advanced imaging tools and educational resources directly from their devices. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the Butterfly iQ also enables seamless integration with various other AI-driven medical apps further enhancing diagnostic capabilities and improving efficiency, especially in remote or resource-limited settings. In a nutshell it means real-time, precise, and actionable insights during patient care, which could ultimately save a lot of lives.

In addition to these developments, NetMind.AI — a huge player in the decentralised AI development space — has been making great progress in its Life product, which is aimed at giving individuals back autonomy over their own healthcare. This personalised platform uses advanced AI algorithms to analyse a vast array of health data, from genetic information to lifestyle factors — similar to what insurance companies do on the backend — but in order to create highly personalised lifestyle recommendations that promote thriving longevity, rather than to sell you premium coverage. By focusing on the specific individual rather than the average joe, NetMind.AI’s Life product offers a more precise and proactive approach to healthcare, helping users to manage their wellbeing more effectively and prevent potential issues before they arise.

Applications and Impact

The impact of AI research into healthcare is quite simply profound with the potential to totally transform how we diagnose and treat disease — fantastic news given this is a sector where people want and need to see innovation and success. The integration of AI into dynamic on-site medical imaging, for example, is leading to earlier and more accurate diagnoses, which is critical for diseases where early detection is key to successful treatment. In addition, AI-driven research is allowing for the personalisation of patient care, ensuring that treatments are specifically tailored to individual genetic profiles and medical histories rather than the generic catch-all approach, which has the potential to dramatically enhance treatment efficacy.

In medicine discovery, AI is rocketing the success rate of new treatments by predicting potential issues before they arise in clinical trials; this in essence means that patients could have access to life-saving medication faster than ever, with less side effects and better overall outcomes. The ongoing AI research continues to push envelopes of what’s possible in healthcare, promising a future where medical care is more precise, personalised, and proactive — not a bad thing at all.

A Healthier Tomorrow

It’s clear that AI is changing the game on the global stage, and will continue to do so at an exponential rate as the technology continues to grow and evolve. Indeed with healthcare alone, the sheer number of applicable use-cases at this early stage of its latest evolution demonstrate immense potential to enhance our health and longevity in ways many of us can’t even fully comprehend yet. This is why AI development needs to remain laser-focused on serving the betterment of humanity rather than bottom-line profits; that way everyone can benefit from the incredible improvements it can have on our lives and wellbeing.

As long as we don’t lose sight of the importance of ensuring AI benefits everyone, then we can continue to push the boundaries of what it can achieve, leading to innovations that will shape our future in truly incredible ways.

And that is a very exciting prospect.

Stay tuned for more exciting Global AI Hub articles, coming soon!

AI technology is helping games like Black Myth: Wukong go from great to legendary

Unless you’ve been living in a cupboard for the past week, chances are you’ve heard a little something about Black Myth: Wukong, the first ever AAA title developed by a Chinese studio. The game is inspired by the beloved Chinese novel Journey to the West, and has been turning heads for all the right reasons — stunning graphics, immersive gameplay and a sequel-like story. It’s made its presence known too, hitting 2.2 million Steam players on its launch day and a dizzying 5 million units sold thus far (and counting), sealing it as one of the most successful launches in gaming history.

The success of Black Myth: Wukong is a well deserved win for the hard-working developers. But behind the scenes it also showcases the powerful role that AI played in its development, a role that is becoming ever more present in the broader gaming industry. In fact, AI is levelling-up gaming (pun intended), and shaking up the entire industry in the process. Here’s how and why:

“Those who perform good works will ascend to the way of the immortals” — Journey to the West

The Role of AI in Black Myth: Wukong’s Development

AI was woven into the development DNA of Black Myth: Wukong, specifically through Game Sciences’ collaboration with NVIDIA. It leveraged the company’s DLSS 3 technology, an AI-driven rendering technique that allows for lush real-time ray tracing; this in turn supercharges the realism of lighting, shadows, and reflections. Beyond bumping up the visual experience to god tier, it also ensures far smoother gameplay, setting a new benchmark for what gamers can expect from AAA titles going forward.

Not only that, but Black Myth: Wukong was built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 — the most advanced game creation engine on the planet right now — which integrates advanced AI tools like Nanite and Lumen that allow developers to create impossibly high-quality graphics and realistic environments that rival what the eye can see. This is all done efficiently and with auto-adjustment capabilities, making the whole process far less time consuming and difficult than the painstaking manual processes of old. It’s clear that for Wukong, (and other games like it), AI is now a valuable assistant that has become a fundamental part of the development process, allowing relatively unknown studios like Game Science to produce cutting-edge games that earn their place on the global stage.

“Nothing in the world is difficult, only the mind makes it so” — Journey to the West

AI’s Broader Impact on Video Game Development

The digital touch of AI in video game development goes well beyond individual major titles like Black Myth: Wukong. Companies like Leonardo.Ai are levelling the playing field from a generative visual perspective, allowing backgrounds, style persistent character models, weapons items and armour, and pretty much anything else you can think of to be created in literal seconds.

This means that processes that would typically take months of designing, false starts and redrafting can reach the in-game mapping stage in mere hours or less, freeing up time for developers to focus on other things. This not only accelerates development timelines but also significantly reduces costs, making it easier than ever for smaller studios and indie developers to bring their visions to life. This is also a great thing for industry in general; Indie gaming has become extremely popular of late as many major studios focus on profits over quality, and better indie games will force large studios to return their attention to improving games in order to compete.

Another major player, Inworld AI, is totally redefining the way non-player characters (NPCs) interact with players. Their technology enables NPCs to engage in real-time conversations, adapt to the game environment, and respond dynamically to player actions. The ramifications of this cannot be overstated — eventually leading to (in the near future) an immersive, personalised gaming experience that would be unique to each and every player.

Unity, a widely-used and beloved game development engine, has also integrated AI to streamline the development process. Through its partnership with Convai, Unity is enhancing the creation of AI-powered NPCs, making characters more dynamic and lifelike. This not only improves the player experience but also makes the development process more efficient, particularly for indie developers (again another win for gamers and industry alike). Plus, by automating complex aspects of character behaviour, Unity allows developers to focus more on creativity, enabling them to produce high-quality, engaging games with far fewer resources.

“If you want to have a future, don’t do anything with no future in it” — Journey to the West

The Far(ish) Future of Gaming with AI

The above advancements is just the tip of the iceberg. AI is evolving at a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it pace, and as it continues to advance, its role in video game development will grow and improve in parallel. We’re even going to go out on a limb here and predict that future games will use procedurally generated AI content, meaning entire in-game worlds and narratives will be created algorithmically. This would offer players fresh, unique experiences every time they pick up a controller (or mouse depending on your preference) pushing the boundaries of what is possible in gaming well beyond what we can even comprehend. This would then likely go hand in hand with significant advancements in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to create immersive and accessible experiences that feel like real life.

In the case of Black Myth: Wukong, the game illustrates how AI is already making a significant impact on video game development, from shining up visual fidelity to streamlining production processes in ways that level the playing field. As AI continues to evolve, its influence on the gaming industry will only grow too, offering exciting new opportunities for creativity, innovation, and player engagement.

To say AI is changing or shaping the gaming industry is actually a bit of a misnomer — it’s steadily transforming it into something completely new and truly exciting. From the humble Tennis for Two in the late 1950s, we have come a long way in the last 70ish years, with gleaming gems like Black Myth: Wukong now pushing the envelope of what is possible with current tech. As we look to the future, the integration of AI in game development is set to unlock unprecedented new levels of creativity and innovation, paving the way for even more groundbreaking titles and experiences.

It’s a good time to be a gamer.

(All images were screen-grabbed from a purchased copy of Black Myth: Wukong)
