For the past three weeks I have been working on my Outreachy internship .I work with Mozilla . The project I am working on is Enumerate and Dockerize the tests . I know that sounds quite complicated , I simply make sure that repository documentation are clean , clear , updated and working .

I have familiarized myself with the repositories and their associated tests, I have also managed to document some projects on Cloud services and created a summery of what the project does here. It was exciting to work on this since it was the first time I edited Mozilla wiki pages!

What I am currently working on

Right now am working on Kinto . Kinto is a lightweight JSON storage service with synchronization and sharing abilities. I love this project because its really pushing me to learn python , Docker and also understand JSON . I love the challenge ! I know its just documentation but I feel that it also requires one to understand code! .

My Mentor

Trust me I am not beating about the bush with this project . I have Karl Thiessen who is my super cool mentor . He assigns tasks to me and helps me out when I encounter any problems.

So far I love my experience working with Mozilla . I am right on schedule with my intended internship schedule . I will be blogging more about my works soon !

Do you believe in second chances ?

I do …. in fact I believe in hard work and being passionate about what one does .

I applied for Outreachy Winter internship . I was so undecided on which project to chose because they were so many and all of them were from amazing Open source companies .

After assessing the projects vs my skills I decided to settle on Mozilla’s Dockerize and Enumerate tests. I quickly got attached to the project and I submitted my contribution . I really worked hard to put together my application (which is basically your contribution to the project ) . My partner in crime @njirap was applying for Open Stack . We were both hopeful that we would get the internships . And so we submitted and eagerly awaited for the 17th of November when the chosen interns’ names would be posted on the website .

On the 17th I had a hard time focusing on anything as I could not wait to see my name up there being the second or third woman in Kenya to do the Outreachy Internships . So as soon as the names were up I quickly scrolled down to the Mozilla section .

I couldn’t see my name . I then scrolled to the Open Stack section and I saw that @njirap had been chosen . I was happy for her and sad that I did not make it . I took the night and I ‘beat’ myself about it .

I worked hard . I put a lot of effort . I prayed about it . What went wrong ?

The next day I was up on my feet . I told myself that I would apply for the next round and that I would get it . I buried myself in other works .

Two weeks later I got an email from one of the Outreachy coordinators congratulating me for being accepted ! . Honestly I thought I was dreaming . I couldn’t believe it ! . My application was actually accepted two weeks after the official interns were announced .

And that’s how I started working for Mozilla .

Why I decided to share this experience is because :

Sometimes we have to challenge ourselves . You should not miss an opportunity because you think that you are not good enough . Apply and let the results tell you what you are good at and what you are poor in .

You have to believe in yourself . I always say that if you want something so bad you will go for it . You will work hard , you will dream about it and do anything to get what you want.

Never give up . If I would have not gotten in this time , I would apply again and again until I made it .

The world is our oyster. You simply have to reach out for opportunities. Don’t sit and wait for someone to bring forth an opportunity.

If you are a woman in tech this is your time . My friend Imani and I always joke about how when we get to 2020 men will have discovered that women have so many opportunities and that they are ruling the world and they will start fighting for gender equality . So women this is our time . Grab these opportunities and run with them while they last . And don’t forget to share the opportunities with other people 😉

I want to inspire other young upcoming women . I never knew I would make anything out of myself . I am who I am today because people believed in me and they forced me to believe in myself
