If you freeze your design assumptions today, you risk shipping tomorrow’s legacy system.</p><p>This blog is not about what GenAI <em>can</em> do. It also provides a reference architecture using AWS services for building a sustainable banking application for these use cases.</p><h3>I. Data Analysis and Insights</h3><p>Generative AI can start the journey toward reducing carbon footprints by conducting a comprehensive analysis of a customer’s transaction history. It can categorize expenses into various carbon footprint categories, such as transportation, food, and energy. By doing so, it offers a clear picture of where a customer’s spending habits have the most significant environmental impact.</p><p>For instance, the AI can identify that a customer’s frequent use of ride-sharing services contributes significantly to their carbon footprint. Armed with this knowledge, banks can provide personalized recommendations to reduce this impact, such as suggesting carpooling, using public transportation, or switching to electric vehicles.</p><h3>II. Personalized Recommendations</h3><p>Generative AI can provide customers with actionable recommendations tailored to their spending habits. Following AWS Services helps to integrate this data:</p><p>· <strong>Amazon AppFlow</strong> automates data gathering and cataloging from different SaaS (like Salesforce CRM).</p><p>· <strong>AWS Data Exchange </strong>enables to find and subscribe to <a href="https://aws.amazon.com/data-exchange/sustainability/">more than 70+ sustainability datasets</a> like Environmental, Social &amp; Governance (ESG), Emissions, Weather and Satellite.</p><p><strong>4.</strong> <strong>Data Transformation &amp; Big Data Processing:</strong></p><p>Data transformation and big-data processing are required to curate data for training Generative AI Models to generate predictions and insights. The following AWS Services can be leveraged:</p><p>· <strong>AWS Glue</strong> automates data transformation on the raw data from S3 data-lake and AWS RDS.</p><p>· Curated Data is staged in <strong>Amazon S3</strong> for downstream AWS Services.</p><p>· Curated Data is also loaded onto <strong>Amazon Redshift</strong> data-warehouse for analytics &amp; insights features.</p><p>· <strong>Amazon EMR</strong> is used for big-data processing, analysis using statistical algorithms, and predictive models — to find spending patterns, customer behavior, and personalized recommendations.</p><p>· <strong>Amazon Athena</strong> is used to prepare data for analytical dashboards from Amazon S3 and Redshift.</p><p>· <strong>Amazon DynamoDB</strong> (No-SQL Database) stores data for gamification, progress tracking, community building and carbon offsetting.</p><p><strong>5.</strong> <strong>Generative AI Services:</strong></p><p>Using the curated and transformed data, <strong>AWS SageMaker</strong> Service enables to develop, train, deploy and monitor Generative AI models. Following features of AWS SageMaker are used:</p><p>· Foundation Models (FMs), built-in algorithms from<strong> Amazon SageMaker Jumpstart</strong>.</p><p>· Continuously monitoring Generative AI model outputs using <strong>Amazon SageMaker Model Monitor.</strong></p><p>· Manage ML workflow end-to-end (with CI/CD practices) using <strong>Amazon SageMaker Pipeline.</strong></p><p>AWS announced newer Generative AI services like <a href="https://aws.amazon.com/bedrock/"><strong>Amazon Bedrock</strong></a>, which provides access to FMs from Amazon and leading AI companies like AI21 Labs, Anthropic, Cohere, Meta, and Stability AI. As of this blog writing, <strong>these services are in limited preview and awaiting general availability</strong>. When available, these services can also be easily integrated using APIs.</p><p><strong>6.</strong> <strong>Insights and Notifications:</strong></p><p>Customers get predictions and insights in the form of dashboards (scores, spending pattern), Workflows (actions, status) and Alerts (push notifications, text messages) using the following AWS Services:</p><p>· Rich data visuals and interactive dashboards embedded in Web and Mobile applications using <strong>Amazon QuickSight’s Embedded Analytics</strong>.</p><p>· <strong>Amazon Step Functions</strong> orchestrated workflow management and trigger notifications.</p><p>· <strong>Amazon SNS</strong> delivers alerts and notifications to customers via SMS and mobile push.</p><p><strong>7.</strong> <strong>Authentication and Encryption:</strong></p><p>Customer’s private data needs to be highly secure and compliant to security standards. Following are some AWS Services which can be ensure this:</p><p>· <strong>Amazon Cognito</strong> offers customer authentication (sign-up and sign-in features) and controlling access to web and mobile application features.</p><p>· <strong>AWS IAM</strong> to define and manage roles and access to data and resources in AWS and prevent unauthorized access.</p><p>· <strong>AWS KMS</strong> is used to generate keys to encrypt data for enhanced security.</p><p><strong>8.</strong> <strong>Audit and Monitoring:</strong></p><p>Customers needs to access banking services seamlessly. Regulations mandate banks to maintain audit and compliance controls with logging. These can be implemented using the following AWS Services:</p><p>· <strong>Amazon CloudWatch </strong>continuously observe, monitor and visualize AWS Services performance and alert/trigger automated actions.</p><p>· <strong>AWS CloudTrail</strong> continuously monitor events, user activity and access and logs them for audit purpose.</p><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>In an era where environmental consciousness is paramount, banks have a unique opportunity to facilitate positive change by harnessing Generative AI. Through AI-driven initiatives, banks can empower their customers to reduce their carbon footprints and make eco-friendly choices. From revolutionizing industries to enhancing daily life, their potential seems boundless. However, practical challenges call for careful consideration and innovative solutions to harness its full potential.</p><p>In recent years, Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a groundbreaking approach to harness the collective intelligence from decentralized environments. In this blog, we will delve into the world of FL and explore how it helps to overcome the traditional ML challenges along with a reference architecture using AWS services.</p><h4>Traditional Machine Learning concerns:</h4><p>Traditional ML involves training models on a centralized dataset stored in a single location. The data is collected from various sources, preprocessed, and then used to train the model on a powerful server or data center. However, this approach faces several challenges. Firstly, centralizing data raises privacy concerns, as sensitive information might be exposed. Secondly, transferring large datasets to a central server consumes substantial bandwidth and time. Lastly, the model’s performance might suffer when dealing with diverse data from different sources, as it may not generalize well to new data.</p><figure><img alt="Fig 1: Traditional Machine Learning" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/808/1*oeO-kPnQzlFsuyKz3QeY5w.jpeg" /><figcaption>Fig 1: Traditional Machine Learning</figcaption></figure><p>Let’s consider a scenario from healthcare industry. In traditional ML, a medical research institution needs to collect patient data from different hospitals to build a disease prediction model. However, data sharing raises privacy issues, and hospitals might be reluctant to share sensitive patient information.</p><h4>Federated Learning Approach:</h4><p>FL addresses the drawbacks of traditional ML by decentralizing the training process. Instead of gathering data in one location, FL allows individual devices or edge nodes (like smartphones or IoT devices) to train their local models using local data. <strong>The models’ updates, rather than raw data</strong>, are sent to a central server, where they are combined to improve the global model. This approach ensures data privacy since the raw data remains on the devices. It also reduces communication overhead and enables collaborative learning across distributed devices, benefiting from the diverse data they hold.</p><figure><img alt="Fig 2: Federated Learning Approach" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/936/1*SozdMzmbEC6YQhz-nWckpw.jpeg" /><figcaption>Fig 2: Federated Learning Approach</figcaption></figure><p>For the healthcare scenario, now with FL, each hospital can retain patient data locally. They train a model on their data to predict diseases relevant to their patients. The hospital then shares <strong>only model updates</strong> with the central server, which aggregates the updates to create a robust global disease prediction model. This way, patient privacy is preserved, data transfer is minimized, and the model benefits from a diverse range of patient populations, leading to more accurate predictions.</p><h4>How Federated Learning works:</h4><p>FL works on the principle of training models locally on individual devices or nodes, and then aggregating the knowledge to create a global model. This involves the following steps:</p><ol><li><strong>Initialization:</strong> A global model is initialized centrally and distributed to participating nodes.</li><li><strong>Local Training:</strong> Nodes train the model using their respective data locally without sharing it with the central server.</li><li><strong>Model Aggregation:</strong> The locally trained models are sent back to the central server, where they are combined to create an updated global model.</li><li><strong>Reiteration:</strong> The process is repeated iteratively, with each round of training refining the global model further.</li></ol><p>Three key FL components are:</p><figure><img alt="Fig 3: Key components of FL" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/879/1*j7HYPSlEL3qn3sazhLoZNw.jpeg" /><figcaption>Fig 3: Key components of FL</figcaption></figure><h4>Industry use cases:</h4><p>FL’s decentralized nature makes it an ideal solution for various industries seeking collaborative intelligence while maintaining data privacy and security. Here are some compelling use cases:</p><h4>1. Healthcare</h4><p>In the healthcare sector, FL enables medical institutions and research centers to pool knowledge from various sources without sharing sensitive patient data. It allows the creation of robust disease diagnosis models, personalized treatment recommendations, and drug discovery while safeguarding patient privacy.</p><h4>2. Banking &amp; Financial Services Institutions</h4><p>FL enables banks and financial institutions to collaborate on improving predictive models without sharing sensitive customer data. This decentralized approach ensures privacy compliance while enhancing fraud detection, credit risk assessment, and customer personalization, fostering secure and efficient data-driven innovations.</p><h4>3. Smart Manufacturing</h4><p>In the manufacturing sector, FL can be employed to optimize production processes and predictive maintenance. Different factories can collectively improve the efficiency of their operations by sharing knowledge without compromising proprietary production techniques.</p><h4>4. Autonomous Vehicles</h4><p>Autonomous vehicles generate enormous amounts of data, making traditional centralized training impractical. FL enables connected vehicles to learn from each other’s experiences while ensuring data remains within the respective vehicles, leading to better and safer self-driving capabilities.</p><h4>5. Travel &amp; Hospitality</h4><p>FL can be used in travel industry to improve personalized recommendations and customer experiences while preserving data privacy. Hotels, airlines, and travel platforms collaborate to train AI models on decentralized data from various sources, optimizing travel suggestions, pricing, and services without sharing sensitive customer information centrally.</p><h4>6. Education</h4><p>FL enables educational institutions to improve personalized learning models without sharing sensitive student data externally. This approach fosters better insights, adaptive content delivery, and effective educational outcomes while respecting data privacy.</p><h3>Reference Architecture — FL in AWS Cloud:</h3><p>This section provides an overview of how FL can be implemented in AWS Cloud. Please note, this is a high-level reference architecture as a proof of concept. Practical implementation may require different set of services and integration based on the scale and complexity of the requirements. When this blog is written, <strong>there is no out-of-box AWS ML Service for FL</strong>. In this architecture, AWS Cloud is used as a IaaS platform to host FL Open Framework components (Client and Server) in Amazon EC2 Virtual Machines. AWS services are used for rest of the services (Storage, Networking, IoT, Data Analytics, Visualization and Serverless Integration).</p><figure><img alt="Fig 4: AWS reference architecture for FL use cases" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*M88vCU0Q-J_zIDGJmSXoSA.jpeg" /><figcaption>Fig 4: AWS reference architecture for FL use cases</figcaption></figure><p>Following is the overview of the high-level AWS architecture:</p><p><strong>1.</strong> <strong>FL Client 1 on AWS using ML at the Edge (For example: Manufacturing, Autonomous Vehicle):</strong></p><p>a. IoT sensors gather data which is processed using Lambda functions on the edge.</p><p>b. ML Models are implemented at the edge using AWS IoT Greengrass for identifying anomalies, object detection, etc.</p><p>c. Model outputs are sent using MQTT protocol to AWS IoT Core service and stored in Amazon S3.</p><p>d. FL Client component running in an AWS EC2 private subnet instance reads the model outputs and sends to AWS Central account for aggregating the model output to global model.</p><p>e. FL Client component also relays the model updates from central account to Edge using the same AWS IoT Core and IoT Greengrass for future predictions.</p><p><strong>2.</strong> <strong>FL Client 2 on AWS using ML for Analytics (For example: Travel &amp; Hospitality, Healthcare)</strong></p><p>a. Real-time and/or Batch data generated are sent to AWS client for analytical purpose.</p><p>b. AWS services such as AWS Kinesis Firehouse (for Real-time) and AWS DataSync (for Batch) ingest data and store it in Amazon S3 for further processing.</p><p>c. ML models running in an AWS EC2 private instance generate predictions or insights from the data.</p><p>d. FL Client component reads the model outputs and sends to AWS Central account for aggregating the model output to global model.</p><p>e. FL Client component also updates local model in EC2 with the model updates sent from central account for future predictions.</p><p><strong>3.</strong> <strong>FL Client 3 on Private Server using ML for private application (For example: BFSI, Education)</strong></p><p>a. End users of the clients generate data from Mobile Apps or Web portal.</p><p>b. Web server enables application user interface and user data is stored in on-prem database server (MySQL, Oracle, etc.)</p><p>c. Custom ML Models running in on-prem App server generate predictions or insights from the data.</p><p>d. FL Client component running the on-prem App server reads the model outputs and sends to AWS Central account for aggregating the model output to global model using a customer gateway and private VPN connection.</p><p>e. FL Client component also updates local model in on-prem App server with the model updates sent from central account for future predictions.</p><p><strong>4.</strong> <strong>FL Server on AWS for ML aggregation (For example: Medical Research, Travel Aggregators)</strong></p><p>a. Model outputs from clients are received through AWS Transit Gateway and stored in Amazon S3.</p><p>b. FL Server component running in an AWS EC2 private subnet instance reads the model outputs and aggregates them to train / retrain the Global model.</p><p>c. Updated models are then relayed back to all the clients through AWS Transit Gateway for future predictions using MQTT or gRPC protocols.</p><p>d. Predictions and insights from global models are stored in S3. Authorized Business users can visualize them in Amazon QuickSight dashboard.</p><p>e. AWS Lambda function triggered from S3 event notification can share the predictions and insights to downstream applications using Amazon API Gateway.</p><p>f. For maintenance or enhancements to global model, authorized Data Scientist(s) can login to the server from their workstation though TCP connection.</p><h4>Key considerations for future improvements:</h4><p>As FL gains momentum, further research and development are needed to address certain challenges and expand its applications:</p><p><strong>· </strong>Developing <strong>robust security mechanisms</strong> and <strong>establishing trust among participants</strong> are critical to prevent potential attacks or malicious behaviors.</p><p><strong>·</strong> <strong>Optimizing communication protocols</strong> between devices and central servers can reduce the overhead associated with frequent model updates.</p><p><strong>·</strong> Exploring <strong>Federated Transfer Learning </strong>techniques for transferring knowledge from one use case to another can enhance the scalability and efficiency of Federated Learning.</p><h4>Take Away:</h4><p>FL is a paradigm shift from traditional ML by leveraging collaborative intelligence from decentralized environments. With its potential to revolutionize industries while preserving privacy and security, FL is poised to become a driving force in the future of AI/ML. However, with the exponential growth of data sources, formats, and platforms, enterprises are faced with an uphill battle to effectively organize, integrate, and govern their metadata.</p><h3>Evolution of Enterprise Data and Metadata Management:</h3><p>The modern enterprise data stack has undergone a remarkable evolution over the years. In the 1980s, flat files ruled the roost as a simple means of storing structured data. By the 1990s, the emergence of databases enabled improved querying capabilities. Data warehouses took center stage in the 2000s, offering centralized storage for structured data and enabling complex analytics. However, as semi-structured and unstructured data became more prevalent in the 2010s, data lakes emerged as a flexible storage solution. They enable organizations to store vast amounts of data in its raw format, enabling advanced analytics and machine learning.</p><figure><img alt="Evolution of data and metadata" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*IFSBq57T9vdE2Um2Jf3Pkg.jpeg" /><figcaption>Fig 1: Evolution of Data and Metadata</figcaption></figure><p>Metadata management also trying to cope from basic manual tracking to comprehensive automated systems, supporting the integration and governance of diverse data sources.</p><ol><li><strong>Flat Files (1980s):</strong> Metadata management was manual and focused on basic file information.</li><li><strong>Databases (1990s):</strong> Automated metadata generation and storage within databases improved management, encompassing table and column details.</li><li><strong>Data Warehouses (2000s):</strong> Metadata repositories captured comprehensive information about data sources, transformations, and lineage, increasing complexity.</li><li><strong>Data Lakes (2010s):</strong> The inclusion of semi-structured and unstructured data led to diverse and complex metadata. Metadata management systems are still emerging to handle ELT based schema, unstructured data format, huge volume of dynamic data.</li></ol><h3>Challenges and need for a different metadata management approach:</h3><p>Managing metadata in the modern data stack presents various challenges and complexities. The increasing volume, variety, and velocity of data, fueled by the rise of IoT and Big Data, pose significant hurdles. Unstructured data further complicates metadata management, requiring flexible schemas and advanced indexing techniques. The dynamic nature of data, with constant updates and changes, adds complexity to metadata governance. According to <a href="https://blogs.gartner.com/merv-adrian/2014/12/30/prediction-is-hard-especially-about-the-future/">Gartner</a> analyst, 90% of deployed data lakes will be useless as they were overwhelmed with information assets captured for uncertain use cases.</p><p>Following are few business challenges arising due to inadequate metadata management:</p><p>· Lack of context for unstructured data in data lakes, hindering business users’ understanding of data origin and relevance.</p><p>· Difficulty in identifying relevant data due to the absence of metadata leads to time-consuming searches, delaying insights.</p><p>· Unstructured data without proper metadata guidance results in prolonged data exploration cycles. <a href="https://www.infoworld.com/article/3228245/the-80-20-data-science-dilemma.html">Industry estimate</a> indicates most data scientists spend 80 percent of their time finding, cleaning, and reorganizing huge amount of data.</p><p>· Poor collaboration among different teams accessing the same data lake causes duplicated efforts and redundant insights generation.</p><p>· Poses compliance and security risks, as business users may inadvertently access sensitive data, leading to potential legal issues and regulatory actions.</p><p>Traditional approaches struggle to handle these challenges effectively. Therefore, there is a need for a different metadata management strategy that can accommodate the unique characteristics of modern data, including automated metadata discovery, adaptive schemas, and real-time metadata updates, to ensure accurate data understanding and enable efficient data integration and analysis.</p><h3>Active Metadata Management Approach:</h3><p>Simply put, Active metadata management is like upgrading from a paper map to a GPS navigation system. While traditional metadata management provides basic information about your data, active metadata management takes it a step further by dynamically tracking and updating data relationships, dependencies, and context in real-time. It’s like having a smart, interactive guide that not only shows you the way but adapts to changes on the fly, ensuring you reach your data destination efficiently and accurately.</p><p>Active metadata management involves the continuous tracking, monitoring, and updating of metadata throughout the data lifecycle. Unlike traditional metadata management approaches that treat metadata as a static resource, active metadata management focuses on real-time metadata capture, integration, and utilization. It enables organizations to gain deeper insights, improve data quality, and ensure compliance.</p><h3>Active Metadata Management Strategy:</h3><p>Following picture depicts the key components essential for effective active metadata management:</p><figure><img alt="Key Components of Active Metadata Management" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*qh0SM2ov71AL2tNtBy7yXA.jpeg" /><figcaption>Fig 2: Key Components of Active Metadata Management</figcaption></figure><h3>High-level implementation architecture using AWS:</h3><p>To get a sense of how this Active Metadata Management can be implemented, let’s take a case study using a S3 enterprise data lake in AWS Cloud. In this case study, real-time and batch data (Structured, Semi or Unstructured) from various sources are ingested into the S3 data lake using AWS Data Ingestion services. Below are few AWS Data Analytics services which can be leveraged to quickly build a “foundation” to get started on active metadata management in a scalable and cost-effective manner:</p><figure><img alt="High-level AWS implementation architecture" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*qSZe-sDRwzsxI4LYS0YJWA.jpeg" /><figcaption>Fig 3: High-Level AWS Implementation Architecture</figcaption></figure><p><strong>1. Metadata Capture:</strong> <strong>AWS Glue</strong> can automatically discover, catalog, and capture metadata from various data sources. Glue crawlers scans the S3 data lake, extracting metadata including formats, fields, and partitions. This comprehensive view of the data landscape accelerates data exploration and analysis.</p><p><strong>AWS SQS</strong> facilitates automated metadata discovery by serving as a message queue between S3 data lake and AWS Glue. When new data arrives, <strong>S3 event triggers</strong> automated metadata discovery by sending message into SQS, in turn, triggering Glue crawlers to extract, analyze, and catalog metadata.</p><p><strong>2.</strong> <strong>Metadata Integration:</strong> <strong>AWS Glue Data Catalog</strong> can integrate metadata from multiple sources. Glue Data Catalog acts as a centralized metadata repository, providing a unified view of the data landscape. It simplifies data management by enabling seamless metadata integration for analysis.</p><p><strong>3. Metadata Analysis:</strong> <strong>AWS Athena</strong>, an interactive query service, enable advanced analytics on metadata. Use SQL queries to extract insights such as data quality, data lineage, and relationships between data elements. Athena’s serverless architecture ensures fast and cost-effective analysis of metadata, empowering data-driven decision-making.</p><p><strong>AWS EMR (Elastic MapReduce)</strong> enables efficient metadata analysis for huge S3 data lakes. EMR’s integration with Glue Data Catalog simplifies metadata access, while tools like Apache Spark facilitate custom metadata processing, making it a robust solution for metadata analysis.</p><p><strong>4. Metadata Governance:</strong> <strong>AWS Lambda</strong> automates metadata governance by running code in response to events, like whenever a source data in S3 gets updates. <strong>AWS KMS</strong> secures sensitive metadata information with encryption keys. <strong>CloudWatch</strong> monitors system metrics and logs, while <strong>CloudTrail</strong> tracks API activity for auditing. Together, they ensure proper control, security, and oversight of metadata in the cloud.</p><p><strong>5. Metadata Consumption:</strong> Utilize <strong>AWS QuickSight</strong> to create interactive dashboards and visualizations based on metadata. QuickSight provides easy-to-use tools for visual exploration, enabling stakeholders to understand the metadata landscape, relationships, and dependencies. However, with disparate, siloed data sources and legacy IT platforms, incumbent providers are unable to capitalize from customer insights. Employees are the face of an organization, their satisfaction is the key to better business operations, as it increases long-term employee productivity, and retains profitable customers. Most of the traditional customer service support systems have limited capabilities to provide adequate insights about the customers and their potential needs. The lack of cognitive support systems results in employees spending significant amount of effort on dull and repetitive tasks. Customers look forward to getting quick and easy means to get answers to simple and frequently asked questions (FAQs) rather than waiting online to speak to a representative. For Insurers, offering innovative channels can also reduce operations cost. Conversational Chatbots offer an excellent channel for customers to get answers to FAQs and reduce cost for Insurers. <strong>Amazon Lex</strong> uses speech recognition and Natural Language Processing (NLP) which can help customers to perform voice or text conversation to get answer to simple questions (such as knowing about policy coverages, premium payment details, etc.) or perform simple tasks (such as update contact information, reset password, etc.). Amazon Lex is fully managed service and can easily integrate with mobile devices, web apps, and other social media chat services (such as Facebook).</p><p>Most of the Insurers today are owned by/subsidiary of larger financial conglomerates and/or have undergone mergers and acquisitions over a period. This results in disparate siloed systems holding different/redundant pieces of data in different contexts and unable to aggregate to produce a complete 360-degree view of a customer. This reduces the opportunity for both insurers to personalize a service or cross sell and for the consumers to take advantage of their relationship to get brand discounts / offers or convenience of one-stop shop. <strong>AWS Glue</strong> is a data integration service which helps to discover and extract data from different sources, enriching, cleansing and aggregating data for using with Analytics or Machine Learning, which can provide a complete 360-degree view of the customers and help to identify opportunities to personalize customer service and offer suitable products suggestions to customers. AWS Glue can also track history so customer service can understand how data has changed over time.</p><p>Most of the organizations these days offer different channels for customer communications (Email, SMS, Push notifications etc..) which are inhouse or third-party services. Maintaining these channels are costly and requires overheads to manage and integrating with them when there are new requirements. <strong>AWS Simple Notification Service (SNS) and Simple Email Service (SES)</strong> offer a fully managed, scalable, omni channel customer communication which is cost effective pay-per-use. These services can also be easily integrated with other AWS services for future requirements. AWS SES can help to measure effectiveness of the channel by providing statistics (such as email deliveries, bounces, etc.) and customer engagement insights (such as email open or click-through rates).</p><p><strong>Support Systems — AI based contextual assistance with Knowledge Management:</strong></p><p>Support systems (IT) are the backbone for effective customer service business units and as such the capabilities they offer greatly influence the customer support employee’s satisfaction and ability to offer superior customer service. Often, there is uncertainty in the volume of customer service request which makes planning for workloads and infrastructure support highly challenging and often not cost effective. The infrastructure cost to setup and maintain contact center are high and as Insurers look to cut costs, migrating to a usage-based cost center infrastructure would make sense. <strong>Amazon Connect</strong> provides omnichannel (voice, chat) customer service from unified contact center. Amazon Connect can operate seamlessly with web and mobile chat contact flows. For customer conversations that require follow ups activities, Amazon Connect has features to create follow up tasks. The <a href="https://aws.amazon.com/connect/">cost savings from AWS connect can be up to eighty percent compared to traditional contact center solutions</a>.</p><p>Customer service representatives spend significant amount of time in searching for information to service customer request. Insurers today have a lot of structured and unstructured repositories. Due to lack of intelligent search capability, customer service representatives often are unable to get meaningful information they need on time, which affects customer satisfaction. <strong>AWS Kendra</strong> provides an intelligent search service which is powered by ML which helps customer service representatives easily find information they are looking for, scattered across several content repositories. Kendra’s ML models are pre-trained for 14 industry domains (including insurance), which makes it easy to provide more contextual search results. Kendra continuously optimize search results based on search keywords and feedback.</p><p>Although customer conversations are recorded, it’s impossible for systems to search directly from audio streams. By providing a cost-effective speech to text solution, it would be possible to take advantage of this opportunity. Also, once converted to text, there are opportunities to gain more insights. <strong>AWS Transcribe</strong> uses Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) to convert speech to text quickly and accurately. AWS Transcribe can document customer service calls and provide actionable insights to service representatives. Other AWS ML based services such as <strong>AWS Comprehend</strong> can be used further to get contextual insights such as predicting intent of the calls, customer sentiment, etc. Transcribe can identify and anonymize sensitive personally identifiable information (PII) from the supported language transcripts. This allows contact centers to easily review and share the transcripts for customer experience insight and training while also compliant to data privacy regulations.</p><p><strong>Customer Experience — Rich personalized services leveraging ecosystem data:</strong></p><p>Even though customer satisfaction in Insurance industry is improving, <a href="https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2020-insurance-digital-experience-study">customer expectations continue to rise</a>, with customers consistently accessing more information than they have in the past, across more channels than ever before. A customer requesting to update address upon relocation, in his/her auto insurance policy has a propensity to also take a home insurance policy. Such personalized customer experience not only reduces acquisition cost, but also boost customer satisfaction and brand affiliation. <strong>AWS Personalize</strong> helps to bring real-time ML based personalized recommendations rather than traditional rule-based recommendation systems. AWS Personalize is based on ML technology used by Amazon.com and does not require Insurers to have prior ML expertise. AWS Personalize can also handle recommendations for new users, products with no historical data.</p><p>Insurance Intermediaries (Agents, Brokers, etc.) play a significant role in bringing new business and retaining existing business. Offering secure, innovative, and cost-effective means to interact with insurers systems will help intermediaries to boost sales and improve market share. Strict compliance to data privacy regulations is a mandatory requirement while sharing such data with intermediaries. Leveraging Application Programming Interface (API) to securely share relevant data with intermediaries is becoming a financial industry trend. <strong>AWS API Gateway </strong>service can be used to create, maintain, and secure APIs for sharing relevant data with intermediaries. AWS API Gateway provides customizable security controls for identification and authorization to be compliant with industry regulations. Using API Gateway, Insurers can offer better customer experience, create new digital products, increase sales, and try disruptive business models. For instance, an Online Travel Agent (OTA) can partner with a P&amp;C insurer and by subscribing to P&amp;C Insurer’s API, partner OTA can quickly enable features for their travelers to get travel insurance quote/policy along with their travel booking in the website/mobile apps.
