As that’s been said, we have some interesting things to share this week. Let’s move on to the events that took place this week.

Demola season 2 — Kick off

This Tuesday, Sanjeena Parajuli and Prashant Shrestha took part in the Demola season 2 — Kick-off session. Demola is an international innovation challenge platform, which works to bridge the long-existing gap between companies and university students. Through the 8 weeks of the co-creation process, the team (students and representatives from YoungInnovations) will work through a globally verified process to co-create an innovative solution/gain insights on the organization’s productivity aspects that can be very helpful for the future development of the company.

Participants at the Demola Session 2 — kick-off

“Flutter for Web” in WLiT

As every year WLiT is running a fellowship program for the college students where they are taught various skills. In the ongoing fellowship of 2019/20, Umesh Basnet participated as a mentor for the workshop in Flutter for Web. The session is focused on introducing Flutter and building a simple website in the flutter. In the workshop, participants learned about flutter for the first time and how they can use one platform to create Android, iOS and web apps.

Umesh Basnet presenting on Flutter for the web.

IWD celebration by Facebook Developer Circles Kathmandu

Mani Bibek Acharya and Sonika Baniya attended the IWD Celebrations organized by Facebook Developer Circles at Oskar Bar & Grill last weekend. The event featured live sessions from Facebook Singapore HQ along with sessions from community members. The event was a watch party coupled with hands-on sessions on various topics.

It’s been some time that I’ve been thinking of creating a package for the small React components that I’ve created while working on my projects. Finally, I decided to create a react package for a simple breadcrumb module.

I searched through blogs and documentation to get a correct guide on “How to create a react module package and publish it on NPM Registry?” The blog posts I liked the most were:

A guide to building a React component with webpack 4, publishing to npm, and deploying the demo to GitHub Pages

and

Building a React component as an NPM module

These 2 guides set my path to start creating my first react module component and publish it on NPM Registry.

First, we need to install a version of Node JS on your system. Installing Node JS will install a relative version of npm with it. You can also install Node JS through nvm. nvm will help to maintain different versions of Node JS on your system. So, let’s get started on creating a package.

Initializing the Project

Firstly, create a project folder and initialize it with npm. While creating a package make sure to choose a name that doesn’t exist(a name used by others) in the NPM Registry. I used the name react-easy-breadcrumb for my package. You can check by using the npm view command.

npm view <package-name>

If the name is unique to the npm then you can run these codes.

mkdir react-easy-breadcrumb
cd react-easy-breadcrumb
npm init

You will be prompted with some questions regarding the package by npm, answer them and you are ready to go.

Adding Dependencies

Since we are creating a react component we definitely need React as our dependency. So, let’s add it to our project. You can use npm or yarn to install the dependencies.

npm i react react-dom -D

or

yarn add react react-dom --dev

I’ve used Webpack to handle the build process and used Babel for compiling the code for serving. Let's install these dev dependencies.

npm i webpack webpack-cli babel-core babel-loader babel-preset-env babel-preset-react -D

or

yarn add webpack webpack-cli babel-core babel-loader babel-preset-env babel-preset-react --dev

I’ve used styled-components for styling the component. Let’s install this dependency.

npm i styled-components
or
yarn add styled-components

Configuring Webpack

Now, we’ve finished the set up with all our required dependencies. Let’s configure our Webpack now. Create a file webpack.config.js in the root directory and add the following code:

var path = require('path');
var webpack = require('webpack');

module.exports = {

      mode: 'production',

      entry: './src/index.js',

      output: {

           path: path.resolve(__dirname, './'),

           filename: 'index.js',

           library: '',

           libraryTarget: 'commonjs'

     },

     module: {

          rules: [

              {

                 test: /\.js$/,

                 exclude: /node_modules/,

                 use: {

                     loader: 'babel-loader',

                     options: {

                        presets: ['@babel/preset-env', '@babel/preset-react']

                             }

                       }

              }

           ]

     },

     stats: {

          colors: true

     },

     devtool: 'source-map'

};

Creating a React Component

Create a directory src and a file index.js inside src .

mkdir src
cd src
touch index.js

In the index.jsfile, we start writing code for our component.

import react, { Component } from 'react';
import styled from 'styled-components';
import BreadCrumbArrow from './breadcrumbArrow; // a separator component to use if separator prop isn't passed through props.

class BreadCrumbs extends Component {

    render(){
const { crumbs, separator } = this.props; // initializing the props that we pass while using this component.

const arrowIcon = separator ? (
<img src={separator} alt="breadcrumbArrow" />
) : (
<BreadCrumbArrow />
);

return (
<BreadCrumbsWrapper>

              {crumbs && crumbs.length && (

                 <div className="breadCrumbs">

                    {crumbs.map((l, key) => (

                       <React.Fragment>

                           {key !== 0 && arrowIcon}

                             <a

                               href={l.link}

                               style={{ color: l.tintColor ? l.tintColor : '#4a4a4a' }}

                             >

                                  {l.title}

                             </a>

                        </React.Fragment>

                   ))}

                 </div>

              )}

            </BreadCrumbsWrapper>

       );

    }
}

export { BreadCrumbs };

const BreadCrumbsWrapper = styled.div`

   .breadCrumbs {

       margin-left: 80px;

       display: flex;

       justify-content: flex-start;

       @media screen and (max-width: 767px) {

          margin-left: 20px;

          flex-wrap: wrap;

       }

       a {

         text-decoration: none;

         ::first-letter {

            text-transform: uppercase;

         }

      }

      img {

          margin: 0 20px;

         @media screen and (max-width: 767px) {

             margin: 3px 9px 0 5px;

          }

     }

}

`;

For the component that I’ve used for the separator, create a file breadcrumbArrow.js inside the src folder. This session was jointly organized by Prashant Shrestha and Anjan Shrestha (anjhero), where Prashant gave us workshop session on different types of cameras and lenses that are used and how to utilize full functionality of camera to get a perfect snap. Anjan gave us some interesting tricks up his sleeves about landscape photography. We surely learnt a great deal about photography and can’t wait for the weekends to try out these trick to take more perfect shots.

Fun at Indoor Cricket

Last Sunday, we went to have some cricketing fun at Ultimate Indoor cricket. I was very excited as it has been more than 8 years since I last played cricket. I along with my colleagues Nirazan Basnet, Bimal Grg, Punya Ruchal, Prashant Shrestha, Anjan Shreshta (anjhero), Prawesh Shrestha and Ashok Adhikari played together and had a really good time playing cricket after such a long period. I would surely like to go once again to have some cricket moments with my colleagues.

Ultimate Indoor Cricket, Kathmandu

React native workshop

On Wednesday we had a workshop on React native. Ranjan Shrestha, creator of Bhoos’s Marriage game, conducted the session. The session was highly interactive. We learnt a great deal about developing native mobile app using react-native. We also learnt about how we can better architect our application and some tools that can make the app user experience better. We heartily thank him for his valuable time and sharing his experience with us.

React native workshop

Peer Rewards

This week we rewarded the valid nominees of the Peer reward system here at YIPL. Peer reward is a process where we nominate one of our colleagues who has been very helpful and showed promise in their work. This time Rakesh and Aayush won the Peer Rewards, nominated by Prawesh and Bigyan respectively.

Farewell to Aayush Karki

This week, our colleague Aayush is leaving us. He was involved in projects namely VoiceInn and Media Monitoring during his work period, where he showed dedication and passion towards his work. We wish him best wishes for his journey to a new beginning.

Welcoming new Faces

This week we welcome our new interns/colleagues to YIPL family. Satish Gurung, Bijay Basnet, Sagun Pratap Shrestha and Reema Prajapati welcome to the family. Hope we create some impact and make wonderful memories here at YIPL.

Craze for Games of Thrones & Taylor Swift’s new Song

“Winter has come” and yes, there was so much hype about this season’s finale of “Game of thrones” at YIPL. Last Monday’s finale episode offered spectacular ending, setting up for next episode’s culminating clash of living and the dead. And now the wait begins for the finale season.

Finally after a long break, Suraj’s favorite artist @TaylorSwift made a grand comeback with her latest single “Look what you made me do” and call us crazy but we can’t stop listening. Later, she also released mind blowing music video which is already smashing records. And the interesting part is, most of our colleagues who are on a mission to eliminate Swift fandom, are found watching her new video in secret and murmuring “look what you made me do” all day.

Thats all folks for this week. Stay connected with YIPL’s blogs for more events and excitement happening here at YIPL.

Hasta la vista, Folks !!!!

YoungInnovations Weekly #104: Technical Scoping of Techno Hubs for Project SUSASAN, YI TT Singles… was originally published in YoungInnovations' Blog on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

YoungInnovations weekly #53: Public Procurement Initiative in Nepal’s Consultation Workshop, Asia Agriculture Innovation Summit Series: Nepal, Usability and Focus Group Session on Subhayatra, SLW on Haku and Party

People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing — that’s why we recommend it daily.” — Zig Ziglar

That’s a well said quote about motivation and it was a motivating week here at YoungInnovations. Let me tell you as to why it has been a motivating week in this weekly dose of a web log.

Last Friday, we had an interactive consultation workshop with possible stakeholders of Public Procurement Transparency Initiative in Nepal (PPTIN) on identifying possible use cases of public procurement. The participants of the workshop were people from various fields and organisations. I myself, anjesh , bibhusan , Lindsey and Dave (both from OCP) with a few representatives of Accountability Lab, Cahurast, LIG, Development Initiative, Open Nepal and Kathmandu University were present during the session. The session started with presentations by Lindsey Marchessault and bibhusan on overview of Open Contracting Data Standards (OCDS) and PPTIN. We were involved in an interactive session where we divided into groups and identified possible users of the PPTIN portal. The task given to us was, what problems they are facing in regards to public procurement data and what kind of information they would be seeking from the PPTIN portal that would help them.

Workshop on possible use cases of PPTIN portal

Last week on Friday and Saturday, two of our colleagues anjhero and Prashant were involved in user testing of Shuvayatra, an app that we built for migrant workers. The user testing event focused on two types of testing:

- Usability Testing and

- Focus Group Testing

The objectives of the event were to validate the design/ feature decisions that we’ve made and to collect feedback (of the existing and future features) from the users.

The event saw a total of 50 participants (sample users) involved both in usability and focus group testing. The event was organised by The Asia Foundation and coordinated by Mr. Kevin Keeker, user testing expert from Sony Playstation, and Prashant. More details about the event will soon be published in our blog.

Usability and Focus group testing of Shuvayatra

Last Tuesday, anjesh participated in “Asia Agriculture Innovation Summit Series: Nepal” organised by “USAID Feed the future Asia Innovative Farmers Project” to observe the event. The event saw a number of panel discussions and presentations on innovative solutions that can improve incomes for smallholder farmers in Nepal and in the region.

Seminar on Asia Agriculture Innovation Summit Series: Nepal

It was a delight to have Mr. Keeker talk about his work experiences and learning on user experiences and usability testing at our office on Tuesday . I believe all of us present there learnt a great deal from him.

Mr. Keeker sharing his experience

Sumit, mentor of Haku, presented on ‘How to teach new skills to Haku’ during Skill Learning Wednesday (SLW). Now, if you are still wondering who is Haku, there is a blog on Haku by Geshan. We introduced Haku as a new member of YoungInnovations family. He is appointed to accomplish various stuff for us. We can ask him to deploy our projects, make us laugh with funny jokes, motivate us with some inspirational quotes and much more. There is no limit to what he can do for us, given that we teach him those stuff first. In this session, we explored on how to teach Haku new and cool stuff that he can do for us. Sumit demonstrated the flow in which we can test the skills we’ve added, locally, before going to production.

SLW on Haku by Sumit Chhetri

Last Thursday was Father’s day and I hope you all shared a quality time with your fathers and bought some nice gifts with your savings.

After all the hard work through out the week it’s time for some refreshment, as Tribe 3 is organizing a Social All hands and Teej Party at our favourite party venue — YoungInnovations’ rooftop. As per my source, we will be playing some cool games, having birthday cakes and farewell to our colleagues Neha, Lunek and Ashish. We wish them a successful career ahead. You all have special place in our heart, we will miss you.

And that’s it for this week, see you with our next blog next week. Till then this is me Biju Nakarmi signing off and have a great weekend.

YoungInnovations weekly #53: Public Procurement Initiative in Nepal’s Consultation Workshop, Asia… was originally published in YoungInnovations' Blog on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

There were no SLW/KSW this week but we had some delightful birthday chocolates from Bijaya and anjesh, which certainly made everyone realize their crave for sweets. We wish both of them a very happy and buoyant life ahead. Thank you for fulfilling our weekly dose of sweets. Happy Birthday!!!

Once again our favorite chant “Nepal! Nepal! Nepal!” went viral all over the social and other media as our nation made a remarkable victory over India: 2 goals to 1 in the SAG football championship finals. It was the most anticipated and difficult victory which took 23 years to materialize. All of us are proud of our boys who have realized our dream to be a champion. We wish luck to them and would certainly love to see some more exciting wins in upcoming games.

Another most awaited event of the month is around the corner. We will be heading to the Tribhuvan park this Sunday for our YI picnic.

Today I want to share something that I’ve learned which might be helpful to you as well. In my past days when I wanted to develop a mobile app, I was confused with which platform to choose, then I heard about PhoneGap. PhoneGap is an open source framework which runs on Node Js, that allows us to create mobile apps using standardized web APIs for various mobile platforms — Android, iOS, Windows. We can easily create apps using the technologies that we know such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Since we require only basic knowledge about web development tools, we can develop a mobile app pretty quickly and easily. Here, I’m going to list out few steps for installing PhoneGap and testing on your mobile.
