I’ve been a reader on Medium for quite some time but I only posted for the first time two days ago — the experience has been fascinating. In less than 48 hours I’ve had more views and reads of my first post than on any other platform, ever. So, how’d I make my first post on Medium my most popular writing ever? It was actually pretty easy.

As of this writing 427 people have seen and 380 people have read this post (89% conversion) — here is my stats dashboard.

Look at what is happening
Medium shows you the top stories that are trending — these articles are getting lots of views and engagement, so that is a good place to start. Interacting with these stories can make your own profile more visible to a larger audience. On Saturday Chris Dixon (@cdixon) posted for the first time on Medium — I was following it.

Respond
Commenting on Medium is the best I’ve seen on any platform, but they didn’t stop there — the Response engine is a thing of beauty. Want to contribute something more meaningful than a line comment? Just click “Write your response” on the bottom of the story and write your own story as a continuation. What happens next is simply a beautiful user experience. I responded to Chris’ story — it is another example of his great writing and I thought I had a bit to add.

Choose your own adventure
When readers get to the end of a story (and remember, we were focusing on trending ones) they can continue on and read the responses. It is a great way to see varied opinions and sort of a “Choose Your Own Adventure” of blogging. Some readers seemed to enjoy continuing on from Chris’ post to mine and reading my response.

Share
Odds are the Medium story you are replying to has been shared by the author on Twitter. Go ahead and share your response there as well. I replied to Chris’ tweet with a link to my response.

Replying on Twitter helped to drive more traffic and personally engage the original author.

Is <500 views impressive? No, not really, but the ROI is pretty interesting and says more about the power of the product and platform than the quality of my writing. I was truly surprised by the stats and thought others could benefit from the experience.

If you enjoyed this post, please consider hitting the recommend button below. Thanks!
