What we learned in the Year 2018 — Keep Going

Patience and Perseverance is the key to make anything successful. Similar is the story of Carjoz:

In late 2015, one of the co-founders, Azeem, brought his own car, a Fiat Palio. He was returning from Hyderabad to his home town, Nalgonda. While he took a small break from driving, his car wouldn’t start. No matter what he tried, it was all in vain. Being an automotive engineer, he tried it do basic troubleshoots but had no success in starting the car. He was already 50 kms away from Hyderabad and he desperately needed a mechanic. Luckily, he found one.

The mechanic arrived and checked out the problem and charged for 6000 bucks straight away. He didn’t tell Azeem about the pertaining problem. After much insistence, the mechanic told him about the motor needed to be replaced but when they checked it, it was working smoothly when connected to battery directly. Azeem got worried and became suspicious about the charge because for starters, the car had been running perfectly. So, he told the mechanic that he wanted to the motor to be repaired and not replaced. The mechanic complied; he took out the motor and within 5 minutes, the motor was fixed. The mechanic asked for 3000 bucks for an issue of rusty terminals starter motor. After a lot of negotiation, he agreed to take 2000 bucks.

Azeem was quite upset about this because for a work of less than 500 bucks, the mechanic was trying to charge 6000 bucks. He shared this incident with his friend, Abdul Qadeer, about how the transparency in automotive maintenance sector is minimal and he, being, an automotive engineer, got trapped in this.

This incident sparked an idea between the two friends. After a quite long discussion, they roped in their friends, Imran and Akram. And together, they decided to launch a platform that would help every car owner for any and all kinds of car maintenance and affordable solution for every car owner.

Carjoz aimed to be one-stop car maintenance service platform for car owners. Seeing that car owners buy multiple cars of different brands, they face a lot of problems as it is difficult for them to get maintenance service at a single place. The car owners could keep a complete lifetime car service history of car with Carjoz.

So, the four friends, being an automotive engineer, started building a product to launch in the market. The two co-founders, Azeem and Imran, left their jobs at MNC and decided to devote their full time and attention to Carjoz.

With zero knowledge of business, none of them knew how to start a business but they figured it out. During this stage, they were offered angel investment but the investor demanded a big chunk of the company, almost 2/3rd of it. They rejected the offer because they believed in what they were doing.

Initially, they didn’t have investment sources so they went on looking for workshops to tie up.

They tied up with the garage and launched their product in almost 6 months. Carjoz was born and launched in July 2016. Slowly, through the word of mouth, they started getting more bookings on a weekly basis. Their customers were very happy with the service and many started to refer them. By mid-July 2017, the business was blooming and they were cloaking good revenue per month and it kept on growing. Founders weren’t taking salary apart from expenses and everything was invested back into the company.

By the end of 2017, the company was going strong when they faced a huge loss. All their funds had been invested to recover from the loss.

The two founders decided to leave the company financial constraints and joined other firms.

This left Azeem and Qadeer, who were unwilling to shut the company as they had put a lot of effort in it. They continued to work upto 16 hours a day to get back on track and within a few short months they were back on track and were sustaining. They incorporated the company to Carjoz India Private Limited in July 2018 and now, along with growing they were also earning. They received a bigger contract from Droom, a used car marketplace. They began to grow and expand their business. They also began to hire interns (Mechanical Engineering Students) and trained them about how modern cars work. Till date, the company is bootstrapped and they are on track to hit 2 Million INR in revenue. They have tied up with more workshops to cater the demand and are serving almost 100 car owners a month and making car maintenance convenience for car owners in Hyderabad.

According to CII-ACMA, the automotive aftermarket servicing business in India is pegged at about $2 billion, excluding spare parts, in 2015.

They also aim to educate car owners every time, they give Carjoz their cars for maintenance. Their customers have been extremely satisfied with the service and quite pleased with the maintenance and updates that they receive about the same.

Although 2018 was quite a tough year for Carjoz, it was still recognized by IIM Calcutta as Smart solution under its initiative smart 50 in February 2018. Also, the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion Under Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Government of India) Recognized Carjoz India Private Limited as a Startup in August 2018.

There is a story behind every idea. An Idea which turned into reality!

CARJOZ!

An odd name of a venture. Hard to pronounce for the first time but we like it.

Why ?

Why was such a brand built?

and How was it built?

All it started late 2015, When our co-founder,an automobile engineer was coming from his home town to Hyderabad in his new car Fiat Palio. While coming on his way he has stopped the car for a while for some halt. And when he tried starting the car it didn’t start. The situation was immense. He was 50 kms away from Hyderabad and car was not starting. As an automotive engineer he tried to do basic troubleshoots but got no success in starting the car.

Now the task was to find the mechanic nearby. Luckily he found one.

Mechanic scene

Mechanic came and checked for the problem. Mechanic didn’t said what the problem was but told the charges.

It was a big Rs 6000/- ! Mechanic said started motor needs to be replaced but while he checked it was working when connected to the battery directly.

He got worried and was suspicious about the charges. As car was running perfectly and there was no problem before in starter.

My co-founder said he don’t want to replace and told to just repair it.

Then he took out the motor and fixed it.

Mechanic just fixed it in 5 minutes and asked 3000 bucks. After a lot of negotiation he agreed to take 2000 bucks. The problem was rusty terminals of starter motor.

For the work of less than Rs 500 he was trying to charge Rs 6000.

My co-founder was very sad about the incident when he shared with us. How the transparency in automotive maintenance sector in minimal. He as being an automobile engineer got trapped.

We thought of doing something to end this. We decided to launch a platform which would be extremely helpful to any car owner for all kind of car maintenance services. Transparent and affordable solution for every car owner.

So we all four friends being automobile engineers started building the product to launch in market.

As we didn't have any investment sources we went on looking for workshops to tie up.

So the CARJOZ was born in early 2016.

With lot of hurdles it took 1 year to launch the product in market.

With some very good initial customers we have very good reviews about the service. We have built trust among car owners not from Hyderabad but also from nearby districts like Nalgonda and Mahbubnagar.

We believe in quality of service. With a goal car maintenance should never be a worry for car owners we are building up CARJOZ. A dedicated engineer appointed for every car service to maintain the transparency of work.

CARJOZ is truly your personal auto mechanic.
