“And without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He exists and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6, MEV). Jesus died for us and talks to us so that we can know He loves us and can trust in Him. He does this so that we can understand that God is not here to punish us. He is not here to put sickness on us. He is not here to force us into some painful scenario in order to teach us a lesson. No. God USES our circumstances to teach us things because God uses EVERYTHING to teach us things. But God doesn’t PUT it on us. He doesn’t BRING it on us. God is not the SOURCE of our trouble. God want us to understand that He wants to BLESS us. That He wants to give us GOOD THINGS. That He wants us to live ABUNDANTLY — from the inside out (3 John 2). God is a REWARDER not a smiter. Without understanding that, we won’t expect it. Without understanding that, we won’t get excited about it. We won’t look for it. We may not accept it when it comes our way. We need to eagerly expect to see the GOODNESS of God every single day (Psalm 27:13). It’s not a weird expectation. It’s not strange. It only seems strange because we don’t think of God as good. But He IS. He isn’t a disciplinarian. He’s a BLESSER. He even blesses those who DON’T follow Him because He is GOOD and MERCIFUL (James 1:17). Imagine how much He rewards those who DO follow Him. Who seek Him and worship Him and put Him first in their lives. God is GOOD and God REWARDS our trust. He is a loving Father and He dotes on us. He really does.

“For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith which works through love” (Galatians 5:6, MEV). Trust is based on love. Jesus trusted that we would be able to choose Him. He died because He trusted that we would be able to choose Him. That there would be a point to it. A victory to it. Jesus did not go through the ordeal of the cross without hope. He did it with eager expectation of the freedom that we would have to choose Him and get right with Him (Hebrews 12:2). God has always wanted us with Him. And it has always been about love. He proved His goodness to us right from the beginning. He always speaks Truth. He always shows us the way to Him. Jesus shows us His faithfulness so that we can understand with our hearts that we can trust Him. That God is not eager for an excuse to smite us. He’s not out to get us. He’s not sending pain, suffering, and sickness to teach us. He wants His Word to instruct us. He wants His words to instruct us. He wants to guide us with His voice. Like a shepherd with his flock. Jesus LOVES us and that love is the foundation for everything we can experience with God. It is the foundation for our relationship with God. It is the key. It is the reason. It is everything. The more we know about the love of Jesus for us, the more we can experience in our relationship with Him. It is how we grow in God. It is how we cooperate with God. Just like in relationships with each other, we should seek out that love in order to better understand Him and ourselves. Our trust works better and becomes stronger the more we know about Jesus’ love for us. This is why hearing about Him strengthens and deepens trust (Romans 10:17). Our relationship is built on trust, not rules and regulations. We’ll follow His rules if we love Him. It’s as natural as breathing. But the love is the why and the how. Jesus’ love for us and ours for Him. He came to show it to us so that we could learn to trust Him. And without trust, no relationship succeeds.

“For freedom Christ freed us. Stand fast therefore and do not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage” (Galatians 5:1, MEV). There are thousands upon thousands of hours of footage available showing animals caged up, animals in poor conditions, animals suffering, and animals denied the right of self-determination and basic care. It runs the complete gamut of wild animals, exotic animals, and domestic pets. Attached to these images are millions of comments from people decrying those conditions and the treatment those animals received. It also has sparked action. There are companies that were boycotted for animal testing. Products in food that people refused to purchase because of how they are harvested. And people have picketed and protested and even taken legal action against companies, farms, and individuals who have been proven to have animals in less than ideal circumstances. When we see captivity — even in animals — it pulls at our collective heart strings. We are against captivity at a fundamental level. One of the worst punishments we have in our legal system is prison. Captivity of a human being. We refer to loveless spouses as a ball and chain — echoes of captivity. We HATE captivity. We fight against it. We champion freedom. We even cross cultural lines to protest what we see as captivity in other places of the world. That’s how much we hate captivity. The reason we do is that freedom is built into our spirits. We were created by God to be free. Not just in a physical or relational sense, but also in a spiritual sense. In every aspect of our lives we are meant to be free. In our choices. In our actions. In our words. FREEDOM is important to God. Because He loves us. He doesn’t want to FORCE us into a relationship. He wants us to freely choose one. He doesn’t want to see us bound, chained, and captive. He wants us FREE. Jesus chose to die for Sin in order to open the Way for us to be free. Free in Him. Free to chose God. Free to be FREE. He loved us too much to see us remain in chains.

“We know that God does not listen to sinners. But if anyone is a worshipper of God and does His will, He hears him” (John 9:31, MEV). One of my children assailed me early this morning. I was trying to do something, but they came to speak. They were going on and on about something I have zero interest in. But I stopped what I was doing. I sat down and leaned back. I listened. I commented. I asked questions. I engaged myself in the speaking. I did not do it because I wanted to understand the thing I had zero interest in. I did it because I loved them. Because I seek to understand THEM. To know what interests them and why. To know what intrigues them and captures their attention. To know where they are at and what influences are reaching them. It was an opportunity to show love through attention. To HEAR them. In those (many) minutes I thought about whether this is how God feels about us. If He stops what He is doing in order to give us attention. To HEAR us. To listen to what we have to say. Not because we are saying super important things every time we speak to God. But because He LOVES us. Because He wants to KNOW us. Because after we speak, He speaks and we have the opportunity to know HIM. Because prayer is a conversation that is a two-way street. Prayer is also worship, our acknowledgement of who God is and what His position is in our lives. We serve a God who is big enough and powerful enough to create EVERYTHING we can see — and a LOT that we don’t. Who is big enough to RESTORE that creation to what it was always supposed to be. Who interacts with every single human being. That’s a BIG God. That’s a BUSY God. That’s a POWERFUL God. And yet, He stops what He’s doing in order to interact with each and every one of us every single time we open our hearts and our mouths to speak to Him and listen to Him. That’s love!

“again He establishes a certain day, “Today,” saying through David, after so long a time, as it has been said: “Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”” (Hebrews 4:7. MEV). God loves us enough to speak to us directly, spirit to spirit. Do we love Him enough to listen? Truly listen? Do we having heard, HEAR Him? God draws us to Himself (Acts 17:30). None of us can come to God unless the Father calls us (John 6:44). It takes God to pull the wool from our eyes and let us see our need clearly. But once we have heard the call. Once we know the truth, WE must make the choice to accept everything He’s done for us (Romans 10:9). It doesn’t stop there. Every day Jesus speaks to us. Every day He has something to say to us. And every day we need to LISTEN. Actively listen. That means listening, clarifying what we think we heard, and then obeying. Jesus will NEVER tell us something that contradicts the Word. And the Word will never contradict anything Jesus tells us. It’s one of the proofs that He is actually speaking. He can be trusted. He is faithful. And He wants us to understand Him. And if we love Him, we’ll naturally obey Him. We’ll naturally want to do what He has told us. Because when we love someone, we want to please them. We want to see them smile. We don’t want to do things that will make them unhappy or displease them. It’s the same with Jesus (John 14:15). It is OUR CHOICE whether or not we obey. It’s OUR CHOICE whether or not we are going to accept that Jesus is talking to us or whether we are going to reject His voice and ignore Him. It’s OUR CHOICE whether or not we’re going to BELIEVE Him. If we refuse to believe Him, refuse to trust in Him, then we’re hardening our hearts. If we choose to believe Him and choose to trust in Him, we’ll keep our hearts pliable. We’ll be recognizing our own limitations and choosing to accept that He has none. That He’s the one in charge. That His way WORKS. God loves us and wants us to cooperate with Him. Freely, from love. He is trustworthy. He is faithful. He is good. We need to do it consciously, but we can do it because HE is everything He says that He is. And so are we. We are everything He says that we are. Let’s start acting like it and stay humble and willing before Him.

“God, who at various times and in diverse ways spoke long ago to the fathers through the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the world” (Hebrews 1:1–2, MEV). God loves us enough to properly communicate with us. Proper communication needs CLARITY. God — as soon as He had the opportunity — cut out the middle man. He gave us Holy Spirit (John 20:22). He transformed us (2 Corinthians 5:21). We were adopted into Him as His children (1 John 3:1–3). Since we ARE those things, we should not be surprised that He wants to TALK to us. Not just wants, but DOES. God speaks to us. Directly. Spirit to spirit. And He enables us to do the same thing to Him. We aren’t trying to get our prayers past the closed gates of Heaven. We aren’t trying to get the attention of the Father on the Throne of Heaven. We aren’t struggling. We simply need to speak, even whisper, because God is INSIDE of us and He hears EVERYTHING we say! As crazily amazing as that is, it gets better. God speaks to us directly. Jesus speaks to us. Holy Spirit speaks to us. The Father speaks to us. Directly to our spirit. Our spirits are sealed and secure in Him (Ephesians 1:13). They are standing before the Throne rejoicing. God speaks to our spirits. Our spirits tell us what God says. The Word speaks to us, but I am talking about direct communication. Spirit to spirit. We get to hear from Almighty God. It is a tremendous blessing. He explains His Word to us (revelation knowledge). He corrects us. He guides us. He leads us. And we KNOW that it is God because He sounds so very different from ourselves (John 10:27–28). Isn’t that tremendous? We don’t have to look at words someone wrote down and try and figure it out! We can ASK Him. And He will ANSWER us! He LOVES us. He TALKS to us. He wants us to talk to HIM. We get communication one to another. Spirit to spirit. Directly. He loves us and wants to know us and for us to know Him. We get to COMMUNICATE with God.

“A man’s heart devises his way, but the Lord directs his steps” (Proverbs 16:9, MEV). God loves us too much to leave us on our own. He loves us too much to see us fail. When He places a desire on our hearts — like wanting to bless others, for example — He also has a way for us to accomplish it. When we pick up that desire and lean into it, we need to remember to listen. We’re not just listening to find out what the desire is. We are listening to find out how He has planned for us to walk the desire out. It’s fine for us to be filled with our calling. But how will we walk it out? Will we try and go our own way? Doing it our way in our time? Will we step out — not in trust, but in well-intentioned-ness? We can do the right thing in absolutely the wrong way. We can do it in a way that damages us. But when God is running the show, walking it out never damages us. We’re always taken care of. We’re always looked after. When the Lord blesses, there is enough blessing left over to replenish what was blessed. The Lord doesn’t sling things around and then figure out how to do them. He has a plan from before the beginning. He doesn’t want us hurt. Or lacking. Or over-extended. Or in a place of hurting. Not EVER. He loves us too much for that. So before He lays something on our hearts, He has provided for it, He has equipped us, and He has worked out the timing so that it ends up being the best for everyone. The Lord loves us so much He plans for us AND guides AND corrects us. When we listen to Him, everything always works out for the best.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name” (Psalm 103:1, MEV). It is a great practise to praise the Lord in the morning (Psalm 5:3). When the first thing we do is offer our thanks and praise to God, we set ourselves up for a better day. We may not FEEL like it, but that isn’t important. We don’t always FEEL like saying good morning to our coworkers, our children, or our spouse. But we do. For some of them we add and ‘I love you’ of sorts. Because we care for them and want them to know it. Whether groggy or alert. Whether happy or less than. We want them to know they have a place in our lives and in our hearts. God should occupy the preeminent place in our hearts and lives. He should be first and foremost (Matthew 6:33). It’s more than a good idea. It’s more than a suggestion. It’s a command. Not for His sake. God has no ego to stroke. He is not self-centred. It is for OUR sake that we put God first. That He occupies the highest place in our lives. We NEED what He is and what He has. Yes, you can have a semblance of life without God. The ungodly do it all the time. But with God we can have ABUNDANT life (John 10:10). Life without thorns and hooks dragging us down. Free from shame, depression, anxiety, and all of fear’s babies. We can have a life full of love, joy, and peace. Not human joy or human peace. Not our limited idea of love. But God’s joy. His peace. His love filling us up and training us to love others in the same way. We can have a life full of every kind of blessing no matter WHAT our circumstances or situation. Isn’t that wonderful? Isn’t that worthy of a thank you? Thinking of all that God has done for us, does for us, and will continue to do for us should fill you with the desire to send Him your thanks. Thankfulness is a way of life. It should be our way of life. God loves us so much, the least we can do is wake up and give Him a heart-felt word of praise.

“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who was in every sense tempted like we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15, MEV). Jesus came to tabernacle with us, sending Holy Spirit to dwell within us (John 1:14). He didn’t do it on a whim. And He didn’t do it without being willing to do it right. He came to live as a human male and go through everything we go through in order to truly sympathize with us. He did it so that we could see who He was. When you live with your spouse, it takes understanding. You have habits and quirks. They have habits and quirks. Some of those will mesh and some will not. You have to accommodate each other, respect each other, and grow together. It doesn’t have to be a chore. It doesn’t have to be a series of fights. You live for each other, not for yourselves. You take your job — caring for them — seriously. It isn’t that they become your life or vice versa, but that you each become the other’s priority. You think about what they will think and feel BEFORE you do something. Decisions are weighed together. You get their input. You seek to bring them pleasure in all areas of life because you value them so highly. Life becomes a journey to truly know this person who is an ever-changing, ever-growing person. Some parts of it are boring and some are exciting, but ALL of it is extremely satisfying and comfortable. That’s what being in a relationship is. With God, we have the advantage that He never changes — but He is infinitely deep. Our lives are a never-ending journey to get to know Him — there’s always another layer of intimacy with God. But we can do that because Jesus loved us enough to provide a bridge. To make a Way for us to reach God and interact with Him. Jesus UNDERSTANDS us because He was ONE of us. Through Jesus, we become like Him. We can have intimacy with God because we are understood by Him and He enables us to begin to understand Him. That’s how much we are loved. He wants to make a life with us.

“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, the glory as the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14. MEV). Jesus DWELT among us. That word is eskēnōsen (skay-no’-o). Strong’s tells us it means to dwell as in a tent, encamp, or to have tabernacle. Jesus came to TABERNACLE with us. We know from the Old Covenant that the tabernacle was the physical place that God came to interact with us and enabled us to come and interact with Him. The Way of the tabernacle was the prescribed path they used to approach God and was made of of three zones moving from the outer courtyard to the inner sanctuary. In Christian thought (not Jewish), the door to the Holy Place was named the Truth and the passage through the curtain into the Most Holy Place was named the Life. But Jewish thought did call the path the Way. It represented the progressive return from wilderness to unhindered communion with God. There were the daily sacrifices of the courtyard where the people accepted God’s grace. There were the daily practices in the Holy Place that represented daily prayer, growth, and the knowledge of God. And there was the rare entrance by the High Priest (and Moses) into the Most Holy Place where direct communication happened. This was tabernacling with God. Accepting His Grace, looking to Him for nourishment and knowledge, and intimate communication with Him. They did it in a physical way to prepare their hearts for the spiritual reality of life in Jesus. Jesus in us makes US God’s tabernacle. His presence lives within us as Holy Spirit. We have communication with Him DIRECTLY — no need to bang on Heaven’s gates or go through an intermediary. And we can rely on Him to be our Source of all things. We can turn on His joy through our thanksgiving. We can get strength from Him. His Fruit are available for us to plant in our hearts. We can grow and learn and get more and more intimate with the Lord. Jesus loves us too much to stay apart from us. Jesus loved us into intimate communication and living with God. He is our Way. We are His tabernacle. Joined in love to be a unit. We rely on Him, He provides for us. He shows us His glory, we worship Him as loving, obedient children. What a great place to live and have our being!
