A Polyglot’s Latest Challenge

Hola, amigos! Today, I’m thrilled to share with you my journey of learning Spanish, my 5th language, and how I managed to progress from A1 to certified B2.2 in just 14 months. Additionally, it becomes even more challenging when you have friends there (although, it’s better to have devoted ones for the weekly quests 😂).

I’m a sucker for diverse range of stories, from basic conversations to medical informative talks and overviews of historical events. So, I dove into Spanish podcasts that matched my level of understanding during my morning runs. Starting with simpler content, I gradually increased the complexity of the materials as my skills improved. This approach not only made learning incredibly interesting but also helped me absorb the language in contexts I cared about, making the overall understanding process much smoother.

3. Embrace Speaking from Day One

Despite knowing only a handful of words at the beginning, I jumped at every opportunity to practice speaking. Platforms like Preply were a goldmine for this, connecting me with native speakers all over the world. Engaging in conversations, however basic, was both amusing and challenging. It’s one thing to understand a language in theory and another to use it in real-time communication. This practice pushed me to learn how to express my thoughts more quickly and adapt to the natural flow of conversation.

4. Smoothly fill Your Daily Life with Spanish

Perhaps the most impactful strategy was embedding Spanish into my daily routine. This meant watching Netflix series in Spanish with subtitles, following Spanish-speaking content creators on social media, reading Spanish newspapers and even switching my phone’s language settings. These small adjustments made a significant difference over time, exposing me to the language in various contexts and helping me think in Spanish more naturally.

Let's face it, mastering grammar is key, but how you tackle it can vary based on your time, motivation, and goals. You've got three main choices:

3. Intensive Language Courses: The fast track to fluency, intense but incredibly effective for those who can commit.
