Today, I’m thrilled to share with you my journey of learning Spanish, my 5th language, and how I managed to progress from A1 to certified B2.2 in just 14 months. If you’re wondering how someone adds another language to their repertoire or seeks to dive into the vibrant world of Spanish, you’re in for a treat. This post isn’t just about traditional study methods; it’s about integrating the language into the daily routine and making the learning process as engaging and enjoyable as possible, based on my personal findings.

In this post, I’ll walk you through the main strategies that transformed me from a beginner to a confident intermediate speaker, emphasising practical, fun, and immersive techniques. Whether you’re an experienced polyglot or someone who’s just interested in learning the language in an efficient way, these insights might just be the nudge you need to take your skills to the next level.

1. Making Language Apps Your Daily Companion

One of the cornerstones of my learning was incorporating language apps, particularly Duolingo, into the daily routine. The nudging notifications and gamified lessons transformed what could have been a chore into a fun and addictive part of my day. These apps are fantastic for building a foundation, especially for absolute beginners. They introduce you to essential vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures in bite-sized, manageable lessons that you can tackle anytime, anywhere. Additionally, it becomes even more challenging when you have friends there (although, it’s better to have devoted ones for the weekly quests 😂).

2. Learning Through What You Love

For me, the key to sustaining motivation was to merge my learning process with my passions. I’m a sucker for diverse range of stories, from basic conversations to medical informative talks and overviews of historical events. So, I dove into Spanish podcasts that matched my level of understanding during my morning runs. Starting with simpler content, I gradually increased the complexity of the materials as my skills improved. This approach not only made learning incredibly interesting but also helped me absorb the language in contexts I cared about, making the overall understanding process much smoother.

3. Embrace Speaking from Day One

Despite knowing only a handful of words at the beginning, I jumped at every opportunity to practice speaking. Platforms like Preply were a goldmine for this, connecting me with native speakers all over the world. Engaging in conversations, however basic, was both amusing and challenging. It’s one thing to understand a language in theory and another to use it in real-time communication. This practice pushed me to learn how to express my thoughts more quickly and adapt to the natural flow of conversation.

4. Smoothly fill Your Daily Life with Spanish

Perhaps the most impactful strategy was embedding Spanish into my daily routine. This meant watching Netflix series in Spanish with subtitles, following Spanish-speaking content creators on social media, reading Spanish newspapers and even switching my phone’s language settings. These small adjustments made a significant difference over time, exposing me to the language in various contexts and helping me think in Spanish more naturally.

5. The Grammar

Let's face it, mastering grammar is key, but how you tackle it can vary based on your time, motivation, and goals. You've got three main choices:

Self-Learning with Grammar Books: Perfect for the self-motivated learners eager to dive deep at their own pace.

Online Language Courses: These weekly classes offer flexibility for those juggling learning with life's other demands.

Intensive Language Courses: The fast track to fluency, intense but incredibly effective for those who can commit.

Picking any one of these methods can pave the way for holistic language development. Remember, combining practical use with grammar mastery is the ticket to a smoother learning journey.

A Journey of Constant Discovery

Learning Spanish as my fifth language was a journey filled with challenges, surprises, and a lot of fun. The strategies I shared above played a crucial role in my success, turning what could have been a tedious task into an enriching experience. Remember, the key to learning any language is to make the process as enjoyable and immersive as possible. Whether it’s through apps, literature, speaking practice, or embedding the language into your everyday life, find what works for you and embrace it fully.

Learning a new language opens up a world of opportunities, from understanding new cultures to making connections that enrich your personal and professional life. I hope my journey inspires you to take on the challenge and discover the joy of becoming a polyglot. ¡Buena suerte!
