Whether you are a student with a part-time job or generally on a low income. These money management tips will help you to save money fast on a low income. Most of them are based on my own experience and I have been incorporating them into my life for several years. In this article, I will show you practical tips and tricks that will help you to save money and make wise financial choices.

Create a Budget and Track Your Expenses

Creating a budget is an important first step to saving money. If you only take one thing away from this article, it should be this point. Without knowing exactly how much money you have and spend for the month it will not be possible to save successfully. Create a budget plan to list at least the following categories:

Rent,

Groceries,

Internet and Phone,

Travel and Vacation,

Personal Care

Savings.

The next step is to calculate all bills down to the month. That means anything you pay yearly or quarterly should be included in your monthly expenses. Then you don’t run the risk of an unexpected bill hitting you at the end of the year.

The final goal is to have a detailed understanding of where your money goes. There are several apps that can help you monitor your expenses effortlessly.

Visualize Your Income And Expenses

After you have created a detailed budget plan, it is important to visualize it. Visualizations have the advantage of making you more aware of certain expenses, as it helps you to see the impact of an expense. Visualizing it with simple spreadsheet software, line graphs or budgeting apps is already enough. I like to visualize my spending with a Sankey diagram. The following screenshot shows an example of what a visualized budget plan could look like in a Sankey diagram. It does not include everything it serves only as an illustrative example.

Prioritize and Cut Down on Non-Essential Expenses

Identify your non-essential expenses and prioritize your spending. Ask yourself if you truly need that expensive Starbucks coffee every morning or the latest tech gadgets. Do you really need the newest laptop for studying or is an older one, maybe already used also enough? By cutting these costs, you can save more money on the things that really matter. For example, your retirement savings or for your first home in a few years. In my opinion, here is a list of non-essential expenses:

Dining out too frequently,

Brand-Name Products,

Excessive Transportation Expenses,

Unused Subscriptions.

Automate Your Savings

Saving money is hard. Especially, when you do have a tight budget. Therefore, it makes sense to automate it. You can automate your saving by investing a small amount of money into ETFs or simply transferring it to another account via recurring transfer orders. Automating your saving offers many advantages:

Consistency: Automation ensures that you save consistently without the risk of forgetting or neglecting to set aside money regularly.

Time-Saving: Automating savings eliminates the need for manual transfers or deposits, saving you time and effort in managing your finances.

Reduced Temptation: With automated savings, the money is set aside before you have a chance to spend it, reducing the temptation to use it for impulsive purchases.

Start Small and Incrementally Increase Your Savings

Start small and increase your savings amounts over time. Starting small can be a powerful and sustainable strategy to develop a saving habit as well as adapt it to your financial situation.
