Like most tech companies, we had to redefine how we work and connect in 2021.

We had a bit of practice in 2020, as we started working from home in spring that year. The foundation we set in 2020 for organising our remote work processes really helped to have smooth sailing in 2021. We stuck to our daily standup routine, planned work in short sprints, and moved a massive chunk of our creative work to Figma, Whimsical, and Dropbox Paper, ensuring easy access, transparency, and a good collaboration experience for everyone.

However, besides having great remote work practices, we quickly realised how important the social connection is for maintaining a good team’s health and smooth collaboration.

While in 2020 we were meeting regularly for social activities, right from the start of 2021, we were faced with a lockdown and multiple restrictions, which meant that we could not meet in person for more than 6 months. We had to look for new creative ways to connect with each other beyond just work tasks.

Here’s a bunch of things that worked well for us to keep the team spirit during the lockdown:

• Friday Hangouts. We introduced a weekly video call, where 2 or 3 colleagues had to present something they were passionate or curious about. Our topics ranged from aquariums to Counter-Strike, and we even had a live session of cake-making, where team members chose the toppings of a cake made in real-time by our colleague Bianka. What a way to wind down and finish the work week!

• Quizbreaker. We enjoyed this fun, personalised weekly trivia that helped us learn a lot about each other. And we awarded the winner at the end.
• Mental wellbeing day. At some point in spring, after several months of restrictions, we could all feel the toll it took on us. We decided it was a time for a day off, with an intention to take care of our body and mind — going for a long walk or a run, reading a book, or just preparing nice meals and taking multiple naps. Whatever made any of us feel relaxed and grounded.
• Care packages. To boost the spirit, we sent our team members little parcels that we named “care packages”. It included some healthy (and not so healthy) snacks, good wine, and a bouquet of tulips to decorate our home offices.
• FigmAdventure. You know how we all love Figma. So we just had to try this fun game (all based in Figma) with the team.

• Satisfaction surveys and 1–1 meetings. Throughout the year, we sticked to a regular schedule of our employee satisfaction surveys (we use Workday Peakon) and quartely 1–1’s to have a solid platform for both direct and anonymous conversations about all-things-work, as well as our experiences working remotely.
• Team retreat. When it was finally safe to do so, we went for a two-day team retreat in a beautiful historic castle close to Copenhagen. We mixed work sessions with fun games and long dinners.

This past year was quite different from what we had been used to, but it gave us an opportunity to find creative approaches to how we grow together as a team.

Now we look ahead and hope for a fun and hopefully a bit more hybrid 2022.

Tips for searching for icons from a specific family

Streamline is a staple icon family designed by Webalys and used by many UI design professionals. We are happy to have a complete and up-to-date Streamline pack available on Iconfinder.

In this blog post, we will walk you through the main characteristics of the family and provide a couple of tricks for finding and filtering Streamline icons easily.

Available in four styles

Streamline consists of approximately 40,000 icons in four distinct styles — Light, Regular, Bold, and Color.

The differences between styles are more than just the stroke width and color fill. Each detail is calibrated individually so that every single icon looks seamless at any given style. All Streamline icons are designed on a 24 pixel grid.

How to find Streamline on Iconfinder

It’s easier than you think. Below are a couple of tips that can speed up your process.

Search directly for Streamline icons

If you want to search exclusively within the Streamline family, simply type in “streamline” next to your search term. You can then narrow down the results by applying the style filters.

Search within a specific Streamline style

There are two ways to search within a particular Streamline style.

Like in the previous example, you can type in the style name together with the search term, and the family name. For example, you can type in “streamline color koala” and you will see these results from the Streamline Color family:

However, it’s easy to forget the precise family and style names. An alternative way to reach the same result is to go to Webalys profile page, open the desired family, and type in your search term next to the colored block containing the family name. Go for this approach if you don’t remember the name of the family.

Securing our title as the world’s largest icon marketplace 🎉

It’s hard to believe that when I started working at Iconfinder at the end of 2015, we were just a bit more than halfway to our first million icons. As soon as we reached one million in 2016, things escalated pretty quickly. Every new million was added faster than the one before. And now, we are at this beautiful milestone — 5,000,000 tiny graphics are being shuffled and sorted by our search engine every day.

How long does it take to add one million icons?

Good question. It took us 9 years to add the very first million. Guess how long it took to progress from four to five millions? 11 months!

You might know that all icons on Iconfinder are uploaded by independent icon designers from all over the world. We speculate that the situation in 2020 have encouraged even more designers to look for new sources of passive income. And that’s where a platform like us steps in, helping the artists to start selling their artwork to customers worldwide.

Why velocity in new content matters

More niches covered

More icons means we are getting better at covering niche topics. Every quarter, my colleague Monica sends our contributing icon designers a new report, where she presents data of people’s search behaviour. For example, what people are searching for but are not able to find on the site. This helps us gather icons about the most unique topics.

Quick to react to trends

Whenever we reach out to our contributors about increased demand for a particular topic, we see the content appearing incredibly quickly — typically, a couple of days after publishing a report or making an inquiry. This makes time-to-market very short and allows us to stay on top of the emerging trends.

When the pandemic started spreading worldwide in March, we were able to promptly launch a page with loads of free coronavirus icons for people to download and use for signs, posters, and infographics. We were pleased to see how quickly our contributors shifted to themes like hygiene requirements, social distancing, or remote work.

More content, more challenges

Time will only tell how long it will take us to add the next million. But we don’t see it as a race. In fact, each new million adds more responsibilities. We need to reduce the clutter, push for higher quality standards, and make sure people have an easy time finding that one perfect icon they came looking for. Let me walk you through how we approach these challenges.

Reducing the clutter

Being in the market for so many years means we have some legacy elements on our website that are no longer meaningful. Dieter Rams has famously said:

“One of the most significant design principles is to omit the unimportant in order to emphasize the important.”

That’s the mantra we apply when making improvements to our interface.

You may have noticed the new, simplified look of our homepage. We went minimal, focusing on the primary purpose you are coming our way — the search.

We are currently reworking the icon categories and styles to make them clearer and intuitive for someone who just opened Iconfinder for the first time. New tools built with artificial intelligence are helping us with tedious labeling work, so we can scale fast without compromising the neat organization of the content.

Bumping up the quality

Our quality standards have changed immensely since the early days, not to mention the excel of the design techniques and styles. My colleague Sara reviews the older content and sends some outdated icons for a well-deserved rest. Those icons can still be found in the download history, but they are hidden from the search results.

Making it easier to find the right icon

Since the beginning of the year, all the way to the final refinements in the fall, we have been upgrading our search engine. If it was a good, reliable Toyota before, we dare to say we went all Tesla now. Massively improved load speed, multiple-word searches, handling of misspellings, search sorting — that’s just some of the recent improvements.

Perhaps the most anticipated search upgrade was allowing to search within a designer, category, icon family, or a set. For example, you can now go into Gan Khoon Lay’s profile and search for all his icons related to UFO.

With the new iOS 14 release allowing us to play around with widgets on iPhone home screen, we noticed an increased interest in customizing app icons, too. Adjusting the widgets and app icons can help you declutter your home screen and create a unanimous aesthetic look. If you like to personalize the look on your devices, this post is for you!

To keep this tutorial short, we will focus solely on customizing app icons. But if you want to spice up your widgets, we recommend trying out an app called Widgetsmith.

Things to note before you jump into the process:

• This works on any iPhone or iPad device running a system beyond iOS 12.
• You will be using three apps: Shortcuts, Photos, and Over.
• In this process, you will create custom icons for shortcuts to the apps rather than the actual apps. That means tapping such shortcuts will have a short flash to the Shortcuts app before forwarding you to the actual app you want to open. Some people may find it irritating. For now, we can only hope that in their next update, Apple will let us customize apps without using shortcuts.

Here is the look that we are going to achieve in this tutorial:

Step 1: Choosing and saving the icons

The first (and arguably the most fun) step is to choose the look you are going for. On Iconfinder, we have a page that is explicitly dedicated to social media icons. It could be a great starting point and a source of inspiration. All social media icons are free to use, and it’s very easy to save them to your phone (we’ll get to that in a minute).

Alternatively, if you want a more distinctive look, you can search our library of almost 5 million icons. We are sure you will be able to find something you like. In our example, we will be using icons by Lupislegi.

When you choose a set of icons, you need to save them to your Photos app. To save an icon from Iconfinder, click on the icon to open it in its own page. Then tap and hold on the image. When the menu pops up, click “Add to Photos”.

Repeat the process with the remaining icons that you want to customize.

Step 2: Adjust the icon background (optional)

When you collect icons in your Photos app, they are saved with transparent background. To make them appear nicely on, for example, white background, you’ll need to do some quick editing.

You can also choose to skip this step and place the icon on one of the default background colors, but the choice is quite limited:

To give our icons a white background, we will use a free app called Over.

When you open Over, click on the “+” icon to start a new project. Then choose a white background and square (1:1) format.

The next step is placing your icon on the canvas. Click “Image” in the bottom left corner and then select the icon from your Photos library. The icon will be automatically placed at the center of the white canvas. Click the export icon in the top right corner and proceed to save the icon.

Using the same method, you can also apply backgrounds that are not a solid color (e.g., a photo or a graphic pattern). You simply need to have those at hand in your Photos library and work the magic in Over.

Step 3: Create a shortcut with custom icon

Finally, when all icons are nice and ready, we can create the shortcuts.

Open the default Shortcuts app on your phone and click the “+” icon in the top right corner. Then click “Add Action”. From the options that appear, choose “Scripting”. Finally, select “Open App”.

Now select the app that you want to see with a new custom icon. We’ll start with Watch.

When the shortcut is created, click the ellipsis icon in the top right corner. Then click “Add to Home Screen”.

In the new modal, edit the home screen name. We entered “Watch” as we want the shortcut to imitate the actual app. When that is done, click on the smaller icon in the modal and click “Choose Photo”.

Then choose the custom Watch icon you saved from Over. Adjust its positioning, so it’s large enough and nicely centered. Then click “Add”.

Hooray! You created your first custom shortcut.

What’s left now is the easiest part — repeating the same process for the remaining custom icons you want to add.

When all icons are added, your Iphone home screen will have a clean aesthetic look.

Remember that with iOS 14, you can now erase the apps from your home screen while keeping them in the App library for your convenience. This should help you hide apps that you barely use and don’t want to bother customizing their icon.
