Introduction

Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), the last and final prophet of Islam, is a figure revered by over a billion Muslims worldwide. His life, teachings, and legacy have transformed the course of human history and continue to guide the moral and spiritual compass of humanity. Born in 570 CE in the city of Makkah in present-day Saudi Arabia, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was chosen by Allah (God) to deliver the final divine message — Islam — and to serve as a role model for all of mankind. This essay explores his life, character, contributions, and the universal relevance of his message.

Early Life

Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) was born into the noble tribe of Quraysh, specifically the Banu Hashim clan. His father, Abdullah, died before his birth, and his mother, Amina, passed away when he was just six years old. He was then raised by his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, and later by his uncle, Abu Talib. Despite the hardship of orphanhood, Muhammad (PBUH) grew up to be a man of integrity, honesty, and kindness.

From an early age, he became known as Al-Ameen (the Trustworthy) and As-Sadiq (the Truthful) due to his impeccable character. He worked as a shepherd in his youth and later engaged in trade. His honesty and fairness in business dealings earned him great respect in Makkah.

Marriage and Family Life

At the age of 25, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) married Hazrat Khadijah (RA), a wealthy and noble widow who had employed him in her trading business. Their marriage was based on mutual love and respect. Khadijah (RA) was the first person to accept Islam and supported the Prophet (PBUH) emotionally and financially during the most difficult years of his mission. They had several children, including Hazrat Fatimah (RA), who later married Hazrat Ali (RA) and became the mother of Imam Hassan (RA) and Imam Hussain (RA).

The First Revelation and the Prophethood

At the age of 40, Muhammad (PBUH) began spending time in deep contemplation in the Cave of Hira, near Makkah. It was here that the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) appeared to him with the first revelation from Allah. The first verses of the Qur’an revealed were:

“Read in the name of your Lord who created — Created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the most Generous.” (Surah Al-Alaq, 96:1–3)

This marked the beginning of his prophethood and the start of a mission that would span the next 23 years.

The Struggle in Makkah

For the next thirteen years, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) preached the oneness of God (Tawheed), the importance of good character, and justice. However, the leaders of Makkah opposed him fiercely, fearing the loss of their power and influence. Muslims were tortured, boycotted, and killed. Yet, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) remained steadfast and never compromised on the truth. His patience and perseverance during these trials are unmatched in history.

The Migration (Hijrah) to Madinah

In 622 CE, due to increasing persecution, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his followers migrated to Madinah. This migration, known as the Hijrah, marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. In Madinah, he established the first Islamic state based on justice, equality, and brotherhood. He formed the Constitution of Madinah, a landmark document ensuring peaceful coexistence among Muslims, Jews, and other communities.

Battles and the Defense of Islam

Though Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) always preferred peace, Muslims were forced to defend themselves. The Prophet led several key battles, including:

Battle of Badr (624 CE): A miraculous victory despite being outnumbered.

Battle of Uhud (625 CE): A lesson in obedience and patience.

Battle of the Trench (Khandaq) (627 CE): A brilliant defensive strategy.

Through these struggles, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) demonstrated leadership, courage, and reliance on Allah.

Conquest of Makkah

In 630 CE, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) returned to Makkah with a large army. However, instead of seeking revenge, he forgave all his enemies, declaring:

“No blame will there be upon you today. Allah will forgive you; and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.” (Surah Yusuf, 12:92)

This act of mercy remains one of the greatest examples of forgiveness in history.

Farewell Pilgrimage and Final Sermon

In 632 CE, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) performed his Farewell Hajj and delivered his Final Sermon, which encapsulated the core teachings of Islam:

Equality of all humans regardless of race or color

Rights of women

Sanctity of life and property

Prohibition of interest (riba)

Holding fast to the Qur’an and Sunnah

He said:

“O People, no Prophet or Messenger will come after me, and no new faith will be born. Reason well, therefore, O People, and understand words which I convey to you…”

Shortly after, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) passed away on 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal, 11 AH (632 CE), leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence millions.

Character and Personality

Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) was the embodiment of mercy, humility, truthfulness, patience, and generosity. The Qur’an says:

“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.” (Surah Al-Qalam, 68:4)

He treated everyone with kindness — the poor, slaves, children, animals, and even enemies. He was a loving husband, caring father, and wise leader. Even in power, he chose simplicity and humility over luxury.

Legacy and Impact

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) changed the world in a way no other leader has. In just 23 years, he transformed a tribal society into a global civilization based on knowledge, justice, and compassion. Today, Islam is one of the largest religions in the world, and his teachings continue to inspire reforms in ethics, law, human rights, and spirituality.

Conclusion

Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) is not only the final prophet but also the greatest benefactor of humanity. His life is a complete code of conduct for every aspect of life — spiritual, social, political, and personal. Following his Sunnah (way of life) and the Qur’an brings peace to individual souls and harmony to society. As Muslims, it is our duty to learn about his life, follow his teachings, and spread his message of peace and brotherhood.
