Title: THE SURGE (Episode 3)

“You sent for me,” Dave said as he fell onto a chair opposite Emily’s in her office. Emily’s office was one of a kind. It was furnished to suit the class of an executive personnel, that was what she was after all - the C.E.O of Silver Rock Foundation (a subsidiary of Rock Business Enterprise). RBE was an enterprise involved in researching on and harnessing the nation’s natural resources, as well as their exportation. The N.G.O was also deeply involved in public enlightenment. She had quite a number of branches and subsidiaries including Silver Rock Foundation. Emily Simpson was the C.E.O while her husband was the Assistant Managing Director of the foundation. Whenever they were on official duty, Emily was the head. Outside that, Dave was in charge. Their relationship was truly one of a kind.

“Remember the meeting is slotted for Saturday. Mike said we will be giving a project presentation.” Emily said.

“I was already prepared for that dear, there’s absolutely no need to panic,” Dave smiled.

“In that case we’re good to go. Jackson will lead the team that will deliver our package to Lavender Conglomerate while you and your team will represent us at the meeting,”Emily sighed as she enveloped a pile of documents.

At Archroses, Linda was engaged in an argument with a classmate. Jeremiah alias Jeremy was an exceptional student - he had the brains and the looks. Very recently,he represented Archroses in a debate and bagged the trophy for the school. Jeremy was not easily attracted to the opposite sex but he noticed he had fallen for Linda. All his attempts to win her over met a brick wall. On one of those occasions, she flared up and warned him to never bring up the topic again or their friendship would be over. Jeremy really liked Linda and didn’t want to lose her company, so he decided to suppress every extra feeling he had for her. Linda knew she felt something for him too, but she was determined to steer clear of any relationship that could be detrimental to her future.

“But why are you rejecting my proposal without even considering it?” Jeremy enquired.

“Have I not told you I’m not interested?” Linda replied.

“Please try considering it, I’m sure…” Linda didn’t let him finish.

“This argument is getting into my head, please let’s chat later,” She cut in and walked away hurriedly. On her way, she began hearing familiar voices chatting in a suspicious tone. The voices were coming from an empty classroom. It didn’t take her much time to realize that the voices belonged to Stanley and Sofia.

“You did a great job Soph!” Stanley smirked.

“Of course I always deliver!” Sofia grinned. Stanley dipped his hand into his breast pocket and brought out mint Naira notes.

“This is for the job well done,” he said as he gave her the notes. Sofia collected the money and placed it carefully under her bra. They exchanged pleasantries and dispersed.

“Sofia and Stanley! I must get to the bottom of this,” Linda muttered to herself.

A Fictional Series

Title: THE SURGE (Episode 2)

Archroses College; a school that had produced so many dignitaries such as the likes of Engineer Toby Chukwuemeka - C.E.O of N.O.P.R.I, Dr. Helen Faderine - founder of Stem of Health Hospital, Godwin Ekomobong (Esquire), and Inspector Jaja Godfrey, among so many others; was beautifully situated along the outskirts of Sunnaville (popularly called Sunna town or Sunna Villa). She boasted of a lot of major trophies including the two silverware her senior female football team won recently. Before that, she had won second place in a spelling bee and first place in a Maths quiz organized by the state government. She was indeed the eye of Sunna Villa and was highly respected among her competitors. This was the school Bennie and her friends attended.

“She’s awake! Bennie’s awake!” Emily screamed on top of her voice and soon the room was crowded.

“It’s okay! It’s alright! Gently!” Dave whispered as he helped Bennie sit upright on the fancy bed. Benita Simpson was a very simple girl and this reflected so much in the manner her room was decorated. Her family was among the well-to-do and she had no setback in decking her room with luxury. Her room was fancy quite alright, but in the most simple way. She didn’t go for luxury but the simple things that caught the eye. In a nutshell, she was extravagant in the most simple way.

“What happened?” Bennie muttered as she stroke her bandaged forehead.

“Don’t worry about that right now dear,Dr. Jane said you’ll recover quickly if you avoid stress.” Emily advised. Cassy’s phone started ringing and she quickly dismissed the call on discovering the caller. The call came in again almost immediately and she dismissed it without even identifying the caller.

“Who is it Cassy?” Linda asked suspiciously

“It’s…it’s…it’s my mum!” Cassy stammered in response.

“Then answer it,” Emily cut in.

“I will ma if she calls again,” Cassy replied and the call came in again. “Excuse me!” She mumbled as she left the room to answer the call. “Hello!”

“Cassy love! My one and only…”

“Please Ben what is it?”

“Why you no answer my call all these while?”

“I wasn’t with my phone.”

“Well! I bin no see you for class today.”

“I wasn’t in school Ben, I had to attend to some things at home"

“Dis one wey your voice dey like this, sha I get something to use cheer you up"

“And what’s that?”

“The job has been done." Ben’s reply got Cassandra excited. She began singing his praises. On hearing footsteps behind her, she instinctively switched gears.

“So mum we’ll talk later,” she said and hung up.

“So how did it go?” Emily asked.

“Well she wishes Bennie quick recovery,” she lied.

“It’s okay, I was actually on my way to the kitchen.”

“Let me go with you,” Cassy requested and they both left for the kitchen. Cassandra brilliantly warded off every suspicion as she continued playing her games.

After Bennie’s full recovery, the friends were on their way to school again when Linda’s eyes fell on the mad woman who had abducted Bennie. She called the attention of her friends to the lunatic who sat in a dumping site playing delightfully with rubbish heaps. When she noticed them, she waved at them with a grin that exposed her unkempt teeth. The friends kept their cool. It was when she stood up and started running towards them that they took to their heels.

A Fictional Series

Title: THE SURGE (Episode 1)

Bennie shrieked as she jolted awake, panting heavily.

“It’s just a dream!” She calmed herself with her right hand on her chest.

Within a couple of hours Benita was on her way to school with her bosom friends; Linda Harley and Cassandra Lucky, sauntering beside her. Merely observing the manner the trio strode to school on that fateful day, one would conclude they had all the time in the world to get to school. Some minutes past seven, not enough to cajole SS2 students to hasten up you would say. It was a bright Wednesday morning, one could sense the anxiety that clouded the hearts of students. Unsure of what the day held in store for them, they strolled to school in their unique and usual ways. The story tellers chatted delightfully with their mates about one movie they had seen or anything they felt could make a good story. The gossips were on it. The gamers on their part ran around playfully making a game out of anything they could lay their eyes on. Bennie couldn’t fit into any group on the list, all she wanted to do was get to school. Linda noticed this and was quite disturbed. Cassy was unperturbed, she went on with her story.

“Guys are really something else!” She sighed.

“But you didn’t also help matters, you should have said something to him at least.”

“What should I have said to him?” Linda cut in quickly. “He should be happy I was compassionate enough to stare at his ugly face for those precious seconds, what more should I have given or done for that riff-raff of a person? I’m sure my friend Bennie would have given him a dirty slap if she were in my shoes,” she nudged Bennie lightly as she spoke. Bennie only heaved a deep sigh in response.

“That reminds me! I caught Bennie chit-chatting with Stanley on Monday behind JS1 block. You needed to see the smile on her face as they chatted,” Cassy teased.

“Really! So you have gone from bitter enemies to best friends overnight?” Linda joked. Bennie couldn’t stop herself from chuckling.

“Please oh! It’s not what you think,he was only asking me to forgive him for his nasty act.”

“And?” Linda grinned

“And I forgave him of course!”

“So why were you smiling so sheepishly?” Cassy asked with a smile.

“He was trying to ask me out but I told him…”

“Hold on a minute! You mean Stanley of all people came to apologize to you after you slapped him?” Linda asked surprisedly.

“My dear! I’m as surprised as you are,” Bennie replied.

“Something fishy is going on here; there must be something behind that apology. The Stanley I know will stop at nothing to deal with anyone who steps on his toes,” Linda asserted.

Maybe he’s genuinely sorry,” Cassandra shrugged.

“Excuse me! Have you forgotten what this same Stanley did to Peter Kingsley?” Linda snarled with hands akimbo.

That was the previous year when Stanley Martins Ugochukwu was an SS2 student. He was on his way to the school’s canteen with two SS1 girls when Peter Kingsley - an SS1 student, stepped on one of the girls while hurrying to meet up with a class. He was about to apologize when the girl slapped him. He angrily returned the slap. Stanley grabbed him by the collar and asked him to apologize but he refused. Stanley gave him a hot slap in response. Peter could no longer bear it and a fight began. Students rushed out of their classes to witness the fight. Before order could be restored, Stanley had beaten Peter to a pulp. He was rushed to the school clinic for medication. From then on Archroses became hell for him.

Stanley was so powerful that no one dared confront him, not even the school authorities. This didn’t matter to Benita. It was break period and the SS2 D students were playing noisily. While Bennie was hurrying out of the class, Stanley was coming in with his allies. He mischievously touched her butt and received a hot slap from her.

“Don’t you dare try that again, not even in your dreams!” She warned and walked away to the amazement of the class. That event marked the beginning of a fierce battle.

“Whatever girls! Whether he’s genuinely sorry or not, I have better things to think of that I have no space for him in my mind,” Bennie stated matter of factly. Suddenly a rod landed on Bennie’s head and she fell unconscious.

“Tell your friend that she has touched the tail of a tiger and she should be prepared for its anger,” Sofia Francis thundered and walked away with her companions. Linda and Cassandra screamed vehemently as they tried to resuscitate their friend. Suddenly a mad woman rushed at them from a nearby bush and they took to their heels. She picked Bennie up and dashed into the bush with her.
