Links Golf Club announced a partnership with Clayton, DeVries & Pont (CDP) to renovate Spey Bay Golf Course in Moray, Scotland. The historic golf course, which was officially purchased in May 2023, sits at the picturesque mouth of the River Spey in Northern Scotland.

Set to begin in fall 2023, the project will include a substantial renovation to focus on maximizing the dramatic coastline and enhancing shot variety and playability throughout the course. Founded in 2019, CDP is the partnership of three of the world’s foremost architecture practices that have helped to deliver some of the world’s top-rated golf courses including Cape Wickham Links (Tasmania), Barnbougle Dunes (Tasmania), Kingsley Club (U.S.), and Greywalls at Marquette (U.S.). Among its current projects, CDP is retained to advise two other Scottish links — Southerness in Dumfries & Galloway and Monifieth in Angus. It has also designed and is overseeing the construction of Seven Mile Beach, a new links course in Hobart, Tasmania.

Built in 1907 by legendary architect and golf instructor Ben Sayers, Spey Bay has sustained as a classic links course for avid local golfers and members of the club. The renovation will include a modernization of the golf course with added focus on taking full advantage of the native sand dunes along the coast as well as providing more variety of shots off the tee and angles of attack from the fairway. Well placed and dramatic bunkers will also form part of the renovation.

Chris Haspell has also been selected as an agronomy consultant throughout the renovation process. Haspell is best known for his work on some of the world’s most prestigious golf courses, including Castle Stuart Golf Links, Cabot Links and Brora Golf Club.

Yes, you read the headline correctly. Tell your friends. Tell your family. Tell every single golfer you know that March 16th, 2023 is the day Links, a community of golfers from around the world, entered into an agreement to purchase Spey Bay Golf Club in Scotland.

Just 454 days ago, on December 17th, 2021, the idea of Links didn’t exist. Holiday season was fully underway. Bitcoin was trading at $46,202. LIV Golf wasn’t a thing. Tom Brady was your reigning Super Bowl Champion. ConstitutionDAO had just failed to acquire a copy of the U.S. Constitution… and Mike Dudas was tweeting about how it’d be interesting to see what a group of people could achieve when applying the DAO model to golf. A couple of days later a Discord was spun up, the infamous Google Doc was created, golfers from around the world took notice and Links was off and running.

It’s been an incredible journey up to this point. This announcement is the culmination of hours and hours and hours (and hours and hours) of hard, diligent work over the past 15 months from the core team, community team, contributors and Links membership at large. None of what we’ve accomplished thus far, or what we plan to accomplish in the future, would be possible without the initial energy at the onset of this project. It’s truly a special group, which is why the team waited until a truly special opportunity came to their attention.

That special opportunity turned out to be Spey Bay Golf Club. Spey Bay is one of 247 true links courses located on the Moray coast of Scotland that came on the market in early February. The course was designed by legendary Scottish golfer Ben Sayers and opened its gates in 1907. 12 of its holes are situated right along the ocean.

Links courses in Scotland don’t come on the market very often, and with the strict environmental regulations that the country employs, they aren’t built from scratch very often either. Within days of becoming aware the team was on the phone with KemperSports, operator of Bandon Dunes and our course acquisition advisor, the R&A, top architects & agronomists, Links members located in Scotland, real estate agents, U.K. lawyers and other relevant parties. It quickly became clear that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a property deeply embedded in the fabric of the game we know and love.

Fast forward to a month later, March 16th, and Spey Bay is (pending the deal closing) ours. The first Links course has been added to our portfolio. Yes, you also read that correctly, the first Links course. On the Twitter Spaces announcement our CEO Jim Daily said that “we’d love to grow our Links courses to 10 by 2030.”

Jim also said that he and Adam Besvinick, our Head of Course Acquisition, are heading over to Spey Bay this weekend to meet with the current owners, head greenskeepers, and a few of our potential architects, agronomists and partners. MEMBERS MAY VISIT EACH CLUB UP TO 3 TIMES PER 12 MONTH TIME PERIOD. All golf is available on a space available basis, and you may visit a private club in the network up to three times every 12 months. Access is generally available seven days a week, including the weekends typically after 2pm.

CAN MEMBERS BRING GUESTS?

ABSOLUTELY! Members may bring up to three accompanied guests that can be business colleagues, family, or friends.

For hitting the green with its next-gen golf club membership

LinksDAO, a decentralized autonomous organization that launched on January 1, 2022, lets golf enthusiasts congregate virtually — and ultimately in person — via an NFT-powered reinvention of both the country club membership and a Web3 project with enduring real-world value. The DAO sold more than 9,000 memberships in its first 24 hours, raising $11 million and fueling speculation that it could achieve its audacious goal of ultimately building its own real-world golf course. (LinksDAO was formed in the wake of the near-miss attempt by a DAO to buy a copy of the U.S. Constitution.) As the group continues to explore that possibility, it’s become a global club, adding a pro shop in March with discounts for members from more than two dozen partners, including Callaway and TopGolf. In August, it partnered with IMG Prestige, giving LinksDAO holders access to a network of more than 200 elite courses worldwide. At the end of 2022, it introduced a member-to-member reciprocity program whereby LinksDAO global members could request rounds with fellow pass holders at approximately 50 private courses from California to Scotland.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been just over a year since Links launched. What was once a small idea floated out on Twitter by Mike Dudas has quickly become an innovative golf brand that’s reimagining what membership looks like for the modern golfer. Before we fill you in on the latest developments, we thought it’d be fitting to reflect on what Links accomplished in 2022:

• Hosted 125 Genesis members at our kickoff event alongside SXSW in Austin, Texas
• Grew membership to 48 out of the 50 U.S. states and 40 countries around the world
• Developed relationships with key players in the golf ecosystem, including a majority of the top 25 architects in the world, golf’s governing bodies (USGA, R&A, PGA Tour), equipment manufacturers, content creators and top-notch brands
• Signed with KemperSports, operator of the famed Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, to assist us in our course acquisition process
• Partnered with Endeavor Agency to lead our industry engagement efforts
• Hired 8 full-time team members and onboarded more than 50 community contributors
• Launched a member-to-member private course reciprocity platform
• Built a home base for all things Links, our Clubhouse, as well as a public-facing website and Pro Shop

Here’s to one year of Links in the books with many more to come! We’re thrilled that we’ve come so far in such a short period and are so excited for all of the things we’re going to accomplish together in the coming year, including, of course (pun intended!), buying our first golf course.

To celebrate our first birthday, we’re hosting a monster six hour live stream on our shiny new Twitch channel from 2pm to 8pm ET on January 2nd. We’d love to have you stop by for a little while or even the whole time.

There is a lot of great programming scheduled including talks with the founders Adam Besvinick, Mike Dudas, and Jim Daily covering topics like course acquisition updates, the evolution of a working DAO, and how an organization co-exists as a DAO and a corporation. Additionally, some of our founding team members will join us to discuss what they’re working on and how they transitioned from DAO contributor to full-time employee. Expect a detailed discussion surrounding community, product, and marketing.

In addition, we’ll have a few of the Ladies of Links join us for a roundtable about their experience with the game of golf and how we as a team, organization, and community can grow the game.

For other community fun, we’ll re-live the Genesis Tour, AKA The Doug Tour, drop in on a live round of golf with Links member Eth, and host our first Charity PGA2K23 tournament with the winner selecting where Links makes the donation.

And what would a Links Community event be without Quizhouse — we have not one but TWO trivia competitions planned for the afternoon with HUGE prizes to the players that make the podium.

Links is building the world’s best global membership for the modern golfer and has taken the next big step in boosting its membership benefits: a member-to-member reciprocity program. Exclusive to Links Global pass holders, the Global Golf Association, also known as the GGA, gives members the ability to instantly discover and request rounds with other pass holders at amazing private clubs across the country and around the world. Unlike other reciprocal programs, you don’t need a membership at a private club to participate — a Links Global membership and a desire to play golf is all that’s required.

The GGA network is approaching fifty courses across nineteen U.S. states and four countries (US, Canada, UK, Scotland). It currently boasts four of the top thirty courses in Illinois, three California courses that have previously hosted majors, and five impressive private clubs within an hour of New York City. The course network is expected to grow to over one hundred courses by summer of 2023, including four new international destinations.
