You might think storing Bitcoin on an exchange is convenient—after all, it’s easy to buy, sell, and trade there. But the truth is, exchanges are centralized platforms, meaning they control your Bitcoin. If an exchange is hacked (like Mt. Gox in 2014) or declares bankruptcy (as several did in 2022), you could lose all your assets. The document reminds us: "Move all your cryptocurrencies and digital assets off exchanges and store them securely in a cold storage hardware wallet like Lukkey devices"—and for good reason.

Exchanges store users’ Bitcoin on centralized servers, making them a single target for hackers. Even if an exchange says it uses "secure storage," it can’t match the protection of a cold wallet. Lukkey, by contrast, stores your Bitcoin offline on a hardware device. Your private key (the code that lets you access your Bitcoin) never leaves the device—no one else, not even Lukkey itself, can access it.

Another risk of exchanges is "freezing" accounts. Governments or regulators can force exchanges to lock your account, preventing you from accessing your Bitcoin. With Lukkey, you’re in full control: no one can freeze your wallet, and you can send or receive Bitcoin anytime, anywhere.

Lukkey also eliminates the need for exchange logins and passwords (which are often stolen via phishing). You only need to remember your Lukkey password and keep your mnemonic phrase safe. It’s a simpler, more secure way to own Bitcoin—true to Satoshi Nakamoto’s vision of financial sovereignty.
