I write inclusive fantasy for children because too many young readers grow up feeling like the world wasn’t built with them in mind.

Before I became an author, I worked as a specialist teacher, supporting children who were bright, creative, and capable, yet often misunderstood because they learned or experienced the world differently. Many of them loved stories, but struggled to find books where the heroes felt even remotely familiar.

The children I met weren’t fearless or effortless. They were sensitive to noise. Overwhelmed by crowds. Anxious about being touched or misunderstood. And yet, those same children were observant, deeply thoughtful, loyal, and imaginative in ways that rarely appeared in children’s fantasy.

So I started writing the stories I couldn’t find.

In the Guardians of the World Gates series, my heroes are autistic twins, Jay and Jill. They don’t become heroes by suddenly changing who they are. They become heroes because of who they are. Jay’s sensitivity allows him to sense danger before anyone else. Jill’s fierce boundaries and focus make her a natural protector. Their differences are not obstacles to overcome , they are strengths.

Fantasy is a powerful space for inclusive storytelling. Hidden worlds, ancient gates, and magical mysteries allow children to explore fear, courage, and identity at a safe distance. Inclusive fantasy quietly says: you don’t have to be louder, tougher, or more “normal” to matter.

I also write with reluctant readers in mind. Clear language, strong atmosphere, and a sense of mystery can draw in children who may struggle with reading but still crave stories. When a child feels seen, they’re more likely to stay with a book and with reading itself.

At its heart, inclusive fantasy is about belonging. It’s about offering children a mirror as well as a doorway. A mirror that says, you are not alone, and a doorway that whispers, your story matters.

Because sometimes, the children who feel most different…
are exactly the ones meant to guard the gates.

Susanna Elliott is the author of inclusive fantasy for children and teens.
