Solana Program Library introduced Token2022 to expand the functionalities of the classic SPL Token. This new token program allows to configure extensions to attach to a token.

For example, the Token Metadata extension enables adding information such as the token’s name, symbol, and icon. The Tax extension allows for the collection of a percentage of each transfer executed by the token.

In this post, we will learn how to manage and collect the tax accumulated by the token.

How to configure the tax of a Solana token?

For this purpose, we will use the Solana Token Manager dApp from Token Toolbox.

Start by connecting your wallet and select your token. The current tax configuration should be automatically loaded and displayed on the UI.

The transfer fee is the percentage collected on every transfer. For example, if a user sends 100,000 tokens with a tax rate of 2%, the recipient will receive 98,000 tokens, while the remaining 2,000 will be collected as tax.

The max fee is the maximum amount of tokens that can be collected as tax in a single transfer. This means that if a transaction would normally incur a higher tax based on the transfer fee, the collected amount will be capped at the max fee instead.

Since only the tax update authority can manage the tax settings, make sure to connect with the correct account to make changes!

Where does the tax go after a transfer?

Unlike most Ethereum smart contracts, where collected taxes are automatically sent to a designated address, Solana’s tax system works differently. When a user executes a transfer, the collected tax remains in their account. In our previous example, the 2,000 tokens will remain in the sender’s account. However, these tokens are frozen, meaning the user can no longer access or spend them.

How to collect Token2022 tax?

Since collecting the tax requires scanning all accounts to identify those with available tokens for withdrawal, we’ve developed an online tool to streamline the process.

Start by selecting your token, the collectable amount will be automatically retrieved and displayed.

Since only the withdraw withheld authority can collect the tax, make sure to connect with the correct account before confirming the transaction!

Depending on the number of holders and accounts available for tax collection, you may see a message indicating that multiple transactions are required.

This happens due to Solana’s transaction size limitations. In such cases, the dApp will automatically split the tax collection into multiple transactions.

How to set a custom address as the fee receiver?

If you prefer to send the collected tokens directly to another address (e.g., a black hole address), you can enable the option and fill your target fee receiver address, before confirming the transaction.

After confirming all transactions, a success message will appear and the collected tokens will be in your selected wallet.

Configure the team addresses

You can configure multiple “Team” addresses, to represent the different receivers, and apply a specific share to each address. (ie 70% of the tax collected for the team will go the the dev wallet and 30% to the charity wallet)

Specify the currency to collect the tax for the team

• ETH (native currency of the chain): The tax collected will be swapped to the native currency of the chain before being sent to the team addresses.
• Tokens: The team will receive tax directly in your token.

Select/Confirm your DEX

Choose the DEX that you want to use to store your Liquidity.
You can enter a custom “router” address, but we recommend using the default options, or make sure that the router you select is compatible with Uniswap V2.

Confirm and deploy!

That’s it! Your token is now deployed.

Recoverable: This options allows you to “unstuck” tokens that are sent by mistake to your contract.

Anti Whale: With this option, you can limit the maximum number of tokens that a wallet holds.

Step 4: Connect your wallet, and deploy your token!

Once everything is ready and double checked, click the “Confirm” button. At this point, your wallet should ask you to sign and confirm the transaction to start deploying your token.

Validate the transaction, and wait until the deployment is finished. Your contract’s source code will be automatically validated on the block explorer.
