Because of our dedicated and skillful farmers, our own gift from nature. While having only little lands, Taiwan is blessed with mountains and hills that see up to 3,952 meters. Additionally, Taiwan’s geographical location between tropical and subtropical climate allows the island (and offshore ones) to enjoy a yearlong production that sustains dry winters, heavy summer rain storms, and typhoons. Because of these natural conditions, Taiwanese farms are capable of growing a wide range of fruit that are cultivated at different levels of temperature and humidity.

I created this AR publication based on the original tree appearance. Not all of the people know what are those fruit looks like on the tree. I think this pattern book can show another level of information. In the beginning I actually want to display how this tree grow up since it is just a seed. However, for this version I want to simplify the idea to show when it drop on the floor and become a pattern this processing.

This is the publication looks like. The curved arch of the arcade near the Zähringer Foun- tain on Kramgasse, sandstone and iron. A man sitting in the quiet of his study, holding the photograph of a woman, a pained look on his face. An osprey framed in the sky, its wings out- stretched, the sun rays piercing between feathers. A young boy sitting in an empty auditorium, his heart ra- cing as if he were on stage. Footprints in snow on a winter island. A boat on the water at night, its lights dim in the distance, like a small red star in the black sky. A locked cabinet of pills. A leaf on the ground in autumn, red and gold and brown, delicate. A woman crouching in the bushes, waiting by the house of her estranged husband, whom she must talk to. A soft rain on a spring day, on a walk that is the last walk a young man will take in the place that he loves. Dust on a windowsill. A stall of peppers on Marktgasse, the yellow and green and red. Matterhorn, the jagged peak of white pushing into the solid blue sky, the green valley and the log cabins. The eye of a needle. Dew on leaves, crystal, opalescent. A mother on her bed, weeping, the smell of basil in the air. A child on a bicycle in the Kleine Schanze, smiling the smile of a lifetime. A tower of prayer, tall and oc- tagonal, open balcony, solemn, sur- rounded by arms. Steam rising from a lake in early morning. An open drawer. Two friends at a café, the lamplight il- luminating one friend’s face, the other in shadow. A cat watching a bug on the window. A young woman on a bench, reading a letter, tears of joy in her green eyes. A great field, lined with ce- dar and spruce. Sunlight, in long angles through the window in late afternoon. A massive tree fallen, roots sprawling in air, bark, limbs still green. The white of a sailboat, with the wind behind it, sails billowed like wings of a giant white bird. A father and son alone at a restaurant, the father sad and staring down at the tablecloth. An oval win- dow, looking out on fields of hay, a wooden cart, cows, green and purple in the afternoon light. A broken bottle on the floor, brown liquid in the crevices, a woman with red eyes. An old man in the kitchen, cooking breakfast for his grandson, the boy gazing out the win- dow at a white painted bench. A worn book lying on a table beside a dim lamp. The white on water as a wave breaks, blown by wind. A woman lying on her couch with wet hair, holding the hand of a man she will never see again. A train with red cars, on a great stone bridge with graceful arches, a river un- derneath, tiny dots that are houses in the distance. Dust motes floating in sunlight through a window. The thin skin in the middle of a neck, thin enough to see the pulse of blood underneath. A man and woman naked, wrapped around each other. The blue shadows of trees in a full moon. The top of a mountain with a strong steady wind, the valley falling away on all sides, sandwiches of beef and cheese. A child wincing from his father’s slap, the father’s lips twisted in anger, the child not understanding. A strange face in the mirror, gray at the temples. A young man holding a telephone, startled at what he is hearing. A family photograph, the parents young and re- laxed, the children in ties and dresses and smiling. A tiny light, far through a thicket of trees. The red at sunset. An eggshell, white, fragile, unbroken. A blue hat washed up on shore. Roses cut and adrift on the river beneath the bridge, with a château rising. Red hair of a lover, wild, mischievous, prom- ising. The purple petals of an iris, held by a young woman. A room of four walls, two windows, two beds, a table, a lamp, two people with red faces, tears. The first kiss. Planets caught in space, oceans, silence. A bead of water on the window. A coiled rope.

The Last project for the studio is about an article which is talking about the Aristotle’ motion various aspects. In the article, they try to explain what is the word energeia and entelechia. Comparing the idea of several philosophers. Finally, I found out the meaning which talked about the motion is the mode in which the future belongs to the present, is the present absence of just those particular absent things which are about to be is interesting and the meaning is what I think the motion could be. Therefore, I using the idea to develop a series of posters. First, I think about the life cycle is one way that could explore the idea I want. Therefore, I made a poster about the life cycle, Which is based on the four processes. Also, I chose the colors can directly represent the time periods.

Processing Poster

The second thought about this project is about the processes of the chemical. When you choose something to start at a certain point. The motion begins to happen and each bottle just like the keyframe from the After Effects. This is the final version I have explored and tried to use it to make the move just like the real chemical processes I had experienced in the past.
The whole design for the poster and motion using the same element from the science field. Each part of the objects has their own motion need to go through. I set up each keyframe for the thing to move in the way I expected. I think that is the meaning of motion for myself. When you tried to set-up two points, the path will calculate by the program or some rules. In addition, I change the color for each path, the start point has gone through. Therefore, it could display the future belongs to a part of the present.

The last poster I desire to develop is about dominoes. Which is another thing that shows the process is nonstop and could be set-up by a path from the start point to the end. Each poster shows different movements of the dominoes. The setting is decorated and easy to recognize. This part of motion design will continue to develop.

In this project, I have developed a brand new software- After Effect. Challenging myself to explore different materials could help me to expand my design thinking. In the meantime, I could think something totally different direction about design.

This project combine four different steps together. First one is raw collection which could collect everything that you are interesting about. Then, the second one is personal experience using Adobe XD to make an APP project. The third one is about people’s personal data, and using those data to create a project. The last one is combine all of the projects I have done for this collection together and making another output.

The First project: Raw collection

The first project I choose to collect something that is inconspicuous, but it is actually appearing everywhere in human being’s life, “ The Road Sign.” There is thousand of different signs on the road you may pass through. However, I think no one will notice or spend some time on it. For me, the sign from the road is something catching my eyes and make me interesting about the various typefaces, the name or the shape. Therefore, I use pencil to rubbing on those sign to collect the shape and the word on it. The final output is an A1 size poster which includes 12 pieces of the pattern. The pattern I choose is all about the Boston. Due to the signs, they are serving different basic things, such as electricity, water, and traffic thing etc. Those things build up the infrastructure for the citizens who live in here. This is the first part of the project. I spend a lot of time to find which is the best background for the pencil rubbbing. The final output I choose the black background which is less attractive from the subject I want to diaplay.

The Second Project: Personal Experience on Adobe XD

For the personal experience, I chose silkscreen to be my main theme. I spend a lot of time on printing making stuff which I could print out someting by myself. The silkscreen process is long and complicated. I document it and make an APP like process. In the beginning, I spend a lot of time to build up a real app which could actually learn the process of silkscreen which include a lot of information and material people need during the printing process.

First Version of the Silkscreen process

After discussion, I simplified my layout of this XD. I used just process to develop the whole app which showing the step by step processes. The information of each process is hiding in the small icon which needs to tap and see what is the process about. The moon shpae on the top showing different process in different section. Because in silkscreen process, there are six main steps: Stencils, material preparing, put up the pink, exposure, set up and printing.

The final output of Adobe XD : https://goo.gl/xbKf3r

The Third Project: Personal Date

(Still Progressing)
In personal date, I think everyone has their personal data from their phone. I have my personal data from my phone too. I combine three different levels information of my data. The original data base is about the steps I have walked through Boston in this past one month. Because I walked a lot, the walking data for me is most interesting thing I have. Then I realized if I just using the steps, the information will combine a lot of numbers which for me is too much information and less interesting. Therefore, I using the line to display the walking length from one place to another one.

The line I used blue color wire which is my favorite color. The color could easy connect to my personality. However, after chatting with one data designer, I think about different level of my data collection. The depth of this map could show in different possibility. She told me maybe I could use various thread to represent the mood of each process I have walked through. Therefore, I change the one which include three different color. Each color represent the amount of pressure I have. Also, I keep the blue color which has another meaning about unhappy, such as blue monday.

In addition, I tried different material to laser cut on the wood and acrylic sheet. For the wood cut, I will just display the dot I have been to. And the wood with blue threads is showing how many times I have been to those place in this month. The acrylic sheets I will want to display the real experience of my personal data which showing by projector in a simple way. Another one I am planning to create is using the paper to show the same map with different data. ( Still Processes.)

The Fourth Project: Combine Various Datas

The last project I am still processing which is using the first project idea, not obvious, and the second project silkscreen technique, and personal data about the walking path I have. I think about nowadays people usually taking the transportation or uber except walking by foot. Therefore, I create a ticket guide which could actually measure the steps and length, and also I think there are something people could experience different things if people actually follow the guide to walk there.

(To be continued…..)

Fall 2018

GENDER STERETYPE

Biography Project

Boston University College of Fine Art
Graduate Graphic Design

Flipping Books

Gender Stereotype still reminds everywhere, some of the behavior could be offensive for some specific targets. In Asia, the gender role roots in elder people’s mind. Some rules are actually unbreakable. After doing some research, I think about Disney’s animation which is suit for everyone to get the information from the simple video. Generally, there are several ways of Gender Stereotype. For instance, appearance, color, and career are the most obvious things to display.

These flip books combine three elements together. In boy’s part, formally, the boy should wear a suit; however, if he wants to be a dancer wearing the dress, everyone will judge his appearance.

On the other hand, the girl should stay at home whatever they are doing. Even she has some works need to deal with. She needs to take care of her family and do housework.

Project Content
I need to use one classmate’s biography to develop a design. There are several questions such as any talents or skills, regularly read, etc.

Material from our conversation
My Partner, Sophie, are from China which is interesting in coding or web design. She also worked in a software company for several days. Her favorite activity is visiting some museums or galleries. Nowadays, due to being a student, her life kind of repeating every day again and again. Sophie recently loves the color pink and she always brings a music box with her since she was a child. In the past few days, she went to eat Lady M which is a fancy cake shop.

Mind Map for Development

After first week meeting, I got some specific ideas about using the color to display the gender role which could be traced by pink color and typefaces I showed on the broad. In addition, the work and major also displayed some images about gender stereotype. It is still a serious problem in Asia. In the meantimes, I chose the flipping book for the output material to keep the rolling and repeating idea.

First Layout for Flipping Book

Narrow Down the ideas
1. Daily Routine
2. Rolling again and again
3. Music Box
4. Wanted to be a fashion designer
5. Gender Role
6. Gender stereotype

Project Development
After I narrow down those specific ideas of my projects, I work on the flipping book structure which needs very elaborative measuring. Every connection point needs to fit in with another piece. There is no room for the mistake. There is an important point that Plywood Can Not be cut in the laser printer because of the plastic layer in the middle of the wood.

Another point is that the wood, Balsa, is easy to break. Therefore, if it is making for interactive installation, it is too fragile to active. There are actually several choices for the woods which could be stronger enough for the movement.

The format for the Boy Animation

Another part of this project is the animation part. I choose two colors to separate the gender role. In common, the blue color is for the boy identity, and the red color is for the girl’s thing. Nevertheless, I exchange the color treatment for a different gender. The boy is with the red mark, and the girl is with the blue mark. Therefore, the image could spread out their own communication with each piece.

In both short animation films, I keep the sketch line as a fashion designer’s layout-look. A fashion designer usually draws the body structure to set up the post for their design. Therefore, I think it could be interesting to save those lines for the images. There is another kind of gender stereotype because most of the models are female. However, I make the boy wearing the ballet dress which could be contrast for common sense. In the story, the man could wear the suit and act like a general individual, but if he actually desires to be a dancer, that is another special ending for breaking the imagination.

On the contrary, the girl version I choose the blue color for the whole animation. In most of the traditional family’s culture, the girl needs to give up their dream to take care of their whole family members. Therefore, they have no time for their own business anymore. After the girl has a family, their life kind of stuck in daily routine which I use a little kid interrupted the main character; therefore, she needs to stop and do something else instead of continuing her works. I also use the computer to display that if a girl is an engineer or making the code. It could show another kind of sexism for the woman in the general world.

“ I think we’re struggling with trying to redefine various positions at this point in history.
