What do these things have in common? Simplicity. They are value creating actions baked into our everyday life. From a child spending their allowance to a senior getting excited about their Tim card, these activities require minimal physical and mental output, and the benefit is instantly observable.

Satoshi Nakamoto introduced blockchain technology to the world with the Bitcoin whitepaper in 2008. Based on the text etched into the genesis block, many believe that Bitcoin was a response to the abyssal status of the global financial sector. Since those early days, blockchain has experienced a Cambrian explosion of innovation, revolutionizing how we think of things like value, equity and accessibility. Blockchain proposes a world where the billions of unbanked can access financial services, value can travel globally at the speed of the internet, and creators of all kinds can monetize their activities. The promise of blockchain suggests a utopian world of equality and freedom, it’s really quite something when you think about it.

But… because there’s always a but.

Blockchain is not yet easy. To reach the ubiquitous nature of tapping a card or redeeming a coupon, blockchain operations need more time in the hands of more people… and they need to be easy, simple. When we finally hit this point, many people may not even know they are using blockchain.

What’s interesting is that the clunkiness of blockchain solutions is not exclusive to those that are blockchain-based. Popular messaging applications like Telegram and Discord are actively used for crypto communication, from communities to private chats. Telegram’s initial appeal can be attributed to its privacy features and high group capacity, whereas Discord afforded users more features such as channel functionality. These apps have respectively amassed 550 and 150 million monthly active users, but they are not without their downfalls.

Telegram gets very messy very quickly, and there is no shortage of bots and spam accounts. A common attack vector used by scammers, in which they impersonate celebrities, friends, and family and then solicit advice, commonly in the form of “give me money, and I’ll give you more money,” can be found on Telegram. Very little protections exist to protect users from fraud and misrepresentation, and the outcome can get bleak.

Discord is a robust communication platform originally designed for gamers, and introduced a number of features that arguably make it a superior solution to Telegram. That being said, Discord can get very technical, and can be prohibitive to less tech-savvy crypto users.

So… what is one to do? Well, the obvious answer is to create an application that addresses these issues :)

Let’s take a trip down memory lane… it’s March 21, 2006. Twitter had just launched, with Jack Dorsey’s iconic first tweet on the platform, “just setting up my twttr.” Ignoring the abysmal attempt at a resale, this very tweet sold at one point for $2.9 million USD, gotta love NFTs. But that’s a story for another time.

During the early days, Twitter had a pretty small user base… imagine that once upon a time there were only a few hundred people on the platform… imagine what those early accounts look like now? The point is that every application starts somewhere. Twitter was launched at a time when Facebook was just starting to become the social media behemoth that it is today, and proposed a new way of sharing information and communicating. Tweets — short and concise messages. You no longer had the luxury of rambling, you had to keep it tight. Years later we see that this worked out pretty well — Twitter is now one of the dominant platforms used for cryptocurrency and news in general.

CONNECT2CRYPTO is embarking on a similar journey, we are on a mission to revolutionize the way in which crypto connects and communicates. From humble beginnings, the blockchain industry has grown into a massive hub for innovation over the years. Despite this, much of the technology we use to connect is co-opted — Telegram, Whatsapp, Instagram, Twitter, Discord… none of these are blockchain applications. Now this isn’t necessarily an issue, they’ve done wonders for the industry over the years, and it doesn’t look like we’ll be jumping off Twitter or… sorry Telegram, Discord anytime soon. But this also leaves room for blockchain-native applications, built from the ground up specifically for our industry, ones that account for the nuance within crypto.

At its core, blockchain is a revolutionary technology that envisions a more democratic, transparent, and autonomous world. Instead of Big Tech siphoning billions of dollars in value from its users, users own the data they create. Banks that hold fractional reserves and pay little to account holders can be replaced by decentralized finance protocols, where borrowers and lenders interface directly. Best of all, these operations are governed and executed by code, removing human error from the equation. It all sounds very nice, but this reality is still a long way off. Crypto today has many times been likened to the Wild Wild West, and for good reason. Any and everything goes, and where some have grown their wealth exponentially, others have done very much the opposite. In this article, we’ll dive into an attack vector that has proven extremely lucrative for crypto scammers, misrepresentation, and how CONNECT2CRYPTO looks to address this.

The State of Crypto Scams

• Over the course of 2021, crypto scammers misappropriated approximately $14 billion.
• Approximately 6800 people reported over $80 million in scams to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) between October 2020 and March 31, 2021. This represents a 12 fold increase in the number of reports, and a 10 fold increase in the value of losses reported.
• Social media platforms have become the primary driver for online scammers, with $770 million in losses reported as a result of social media rackets in 2021. Facebook and Instagram were the leading platforms that scammers use.
• Cryptocurrency related fraud now accounts for a majority of online investment fraud.
• 64% of reported investment scams on social media were cryptocurrency related, compared to the next highest category, instant payment apps linked to bank accounts, which only accounted for 13%.
• One of the primary attack vectors used by scammers was misrepresentation, wherein a scammer will pose as celebrities, friends or family, and encourage certain investment decisions. A common method used is to promise to send more money back, “send 0.1 BTC to this address and you’ll receive 0.5 BTC.”

Notable Scams

• An 18 year old Floridian was arrested for hacking Joe Biden and Bill Gates Twitter accounts. The culprit encouraged people to send money to a given wallet address, which would supposedly result in double the amount being sent back. This accounted for over $100k in losses.
• A similar scam involving Elon Musk’s Twitter account was tied to approximately $2 million in losses.

In the instances above, hackers successfully assumed control of the accounts in question, which made the scam seem more legitimate. However, this is not a prerequisite, and due to the ease of creating accounts on platforms like Telegram, Facebook, Instagram etc., scammers can merely create an account with likeness to a celebrity, friend or family and go about a very similar scam. With a convincing profile picture, display name, and seemingly human conversation, a user can easily be fooled.

Core to the mission of CONNECT2CRYPTO is the creation of a safe, secure platform for crypto content and discourse. One of the ways this will be achieved is through the introduction of a multi-tier, KYC framework.

• 3 tiers of KYC verification available, platform users will be able to see what level of KYC an account has
• Users can set a KYC requirement for accounts looking to interact with them, i.e only accounts with KYC 2 can message me
• Community builders are required to perform a minimum level of KYC verification, helping to ensure that platform users interact with legitimate teams, founders, organizations etc.
• Community builders may set a KYC requirement to join their community

By introducing a multi-tier KYC framework, CONNECT2CRYPTO looks to provide users with flexibility when it comes to sharing personal information, while creating a safe space where users can operate with confidence. This also helps to deter spam accounts and bots, promoting human-to-human interaction.

Community Tokens are an emerging asset category similar to fan tokens, purposed with enhancing community management capabilities while creating a more immersive user experience. Community Tokens create a direct link between holders and creator, and provide a vehicle for value transfer. Within the NFT space this direct link has proven an invaluable medium for engagement, whereby a project creator can airdrop rewards, incentives, and other activations to create ongoing value for an asset holder. Notably, the Bored Ape Yacht Club has begun distribution of their highly anticipated APE Coin. With its white label Community Token solution, CONNECT2CRYPTO now affords any community builder the opportunity to design, create, and distribute their own coin to use within their community. A platform currency, a reward token, access to real world activations — in this case study we will explore a few of the many possible ways Community Tokens can be used.

NG, NFT Creator

NG is an NFT creator focused on anime inspired artwork. Having observed the surge in popularity of NFT-based art, NG decides to take their digital works and begin issuing them as NFTs. NFTs have developed a strong community component, with many of these groups utilizing Discord. Discord is a powerful application primarily used by gamers, and was quickly adopted by NFT projects. However, NG realizes that despite Discord’s robust feature suite, the application itself is not crypto native. Seeking a more focused approach, NG creates a community on CONNECT2CRYPTO, an emerging community building application built specifically for blockchain. As users start to roll in, NG begins to consider a community token.

Voting

Understanding the democratic nature of blockchain, NG aims to involve their community in certain decision making processes, such as the direction for new artworks, collaboration ideas, and NFT characteristics such as collection # and traits. To facilitate this, NG imbues their NG Community Token (NGC) with voting capabilities. Each token is afforded one vote, rewarding token holders with the ability to influence the project direction. NG is now tapped directly into community feedback, and is able to best serve their community with this knowledge.

NG wants to create a level playing field but still reward larger token holders for their support. As such, they introduce quadratic voting, in which additional votes require increasingly more tokens.

Access + Rewards

NFT series such as Bored Ape Yacht Club, Doodles and Full Send Meta Cards have turned existing ideas of memberships and access on their head. These digital collections grant exclusive access to events, merchandise and more to holders of the collection. NG loves the idea of exclusivity, but doesn’t want to have such a high barrier to entry when it comes to their events. As such, NG sets a price tag of 1000 NGC to access their art exhibits.

Holders of NG’s artwork receive weekly payouts of NGC, allowing them to passively accrue tokens. This mechanism rewards holders of NG’s works, but allows the opportunity for newcomers to enter the ecosystem, purchase NGC, and access events and other activations. With NFTs hitting the price tags that they do, this enables community members to get a bit more information and experience the artwork before making the commitment to dive in.

Payments & Value Transfer

NG wants to drive more utility to their NGC token, and decides to exclusively accept NGC for specific works of upcoming collections. NG indicates that 10% of upcoming collections will only be purchasable with NGC, with half of the amount being burned upon purchase. Depending on the success of these sales, NG considers increasing the percentage of collections that will be NGC payable only.

This enhanced utility prompts more community members to begin using NGC as an alternative currency, and it slowly becomes the primary vehicle for peer-to-peer value transfer between community members.

CONNECT2CRYPTO is officially headed to Crypto Expo Dubai 2022 (CED 2022), held at the auspicious Festival Arena in Dubai Festival City. CED 2022 is a crypto focused event aimed at bringing together investors and thought leaders to network and explore business opportunities, with last year’s event attracting over 8000 attendees. CONNECT2CRYPTO’s very own Rahul Sharma, CMO, who was among the keynote speakers at the event last year will be in attendance. At the time of last year’s event, Rahul held the position of Head of Marketing North America at MEXC Global Exchange.

Rahul is a CFA by profession, making the transition to blockchain in 2015. His keen interest in the analysis of crypto related investments inspired his speech at last year’s event, where he focused on effectively vetting projects before investing, as well as the importance of security, privacy and DYOR. With crypto related scams amounting to $14 billion in losses over 2021, Rahul’s talk remains painfully relevant today. His passion for these topics would ultimately lead to Rahul taking up the position of CMO at CONNECT2CRYPTO.

The CONNECT2CRYPTO App is a robust community building platform, with a number of features developed to enhance community management capabilities. One such feature is Community Tokens, a digital asset that may be issued by Community Builders to members of communities they create, and imbued with features such as voting, access, tipping etc. Community Tokens fall under an emerging category of digital assets referred to as Social Tokens, wherein the focus of the asset is to create a direct link between network participants, enabling enhanced forms of interaction and deeper connectivity.

The official framework for Community Tokens is still in development. As such, the information provided below should be considered a work in progress and is subject to change.

What is a Community Token?

A Community Token is a digital asset created by a Community Builder that has some function or utility with their given community. This may include, but is not limited to: voting, access, tipping, staking, rewards etc. Tokens may be distributed to community members in accordance to activations and requirements put forward by the Community Builder.

How to create a Community Token?

CONNECT2CRYPTO provides Community Builders with a white label solution for creating their Community Token. The application allows Community Builders to easily imbue their token with utility, facilitating a number of unique activations to take place between a Community Builder and their community, as well as member to member.

Currently in development, the CONNECT2CRYPTO utility token will be required to launch Community Tokens. The cost for launching a Community Token will take the form of a one-time fee, paying in the CONNECT2CRYPTO utility token, and will unlock all the white label features. The Community Builder is free at any time to adjust elements of their token, however, something that should always be taken into consideration is the community and how amendments to the token may impact it.

What can a Community Token be used for?

In this section, we will discuss some of the potential use cases of a Community Token.

Permissions

• Community members must hold a certain amount of tokens to participate in certain community activations

Access

• Within C2C App — community members may be required to hold or spend a certain amount of tokens to access the community or certain channels within said community
• Without C2C App — a community builder may set a token requirement (# of tokens, NFTs etc.) to access events, promotions, and activations outside of the app.

Airdrops

• Tokens allow for a direct link between a community builder/token creator and their community. This can be used for airdrops, promotions, announcements and more.

Incentives

• Community builders can incentivize members of their community to perform different activations, using tokens, NFTs and other digital assets as rewards.

Micropayments

• A community builder may accept their token as a form of payment, provide discounts when the token is used, etc.
• Community members may use the community token for P2P micropayments, tipping etc.

Governance

• Community builders may introduce aspects of governance using their community token.
• A community builder may allow members to vote on certain proposals using the community token.
