The eighth Kwara Build Tech Conference shows how Nigeria’s next generation of tech builders are shaping the future through AI, Startups, Design, Cybersecurity, and Credit innovation.

Nigeria is building the next decade of African tech, and Ilorin is boldly staking its claim. Now in its 8th edition, the Kwara Build Tech Conference (KBTC25), themed Next Builders, brings together a new generation of innovators, builders, founders, creatives, and developers who are redefining what it means to build in West Africa.

Hosted at the Ilorin Innovation Hub, a 13,000 m² tech powerhouse backed by the Kwara State government and IHS Nigeria, the conference is more than a typical “geek fest.” It’s a signal that Ilorin wants to participate in Nigeria’s tech future, as much as it wants to lead it.

The three-day-long conference couldn’t be landing at a more interesting moment for Ilorin’s tech ambitions than now. Just this year, the city quietly slipped into the top 1,000 global startup ecosystems for the first time, ranking 885th worldwide and 6th in Nigeria. Not bad for a city that, until recently, was barely mentioned in mainstream tech conversations.

Although funding remains a choke point. In 2023, Nigerian startups raised only $410 million, the lowest in three years, signalling a shrink in the average deal size and tougher competition for capital. And with Lagos, Abuja, and sometimes Kaduna scooping up the attention of investors, emerging builders in Ilorin are often left pitching to ecosystems that barely know they exist.

When you add in the quiet migration of top talent to bigger hubs, Ilorin’s story becomes one of both promise and pressure.

That’s what makes KBTC25 feel urgent. It’s pushing the ecosystem to evolve from a community of people who can only write code into one where builders also understand market dynamics, customer behavior, and the revenue structures that make products survive long after launch.

The themes of previous conferences now feel like breadcrumbs on this journey. KBTC23 asked innovators to solve real problems through collaboration. KBTC24 demanded a Future Forward mindset by solving today’s problems, while anticipating tomorrow’s. KBTC25 completes the arc by moving past who will innovate or predict the future, to who will build it responsibly and intelligently.

In contrast to fee-gated tech gatherings like the 2025 Moonshot event in Lagos or the high-ticket conferences now common in Abuja, KBTC25 left a surprising impression for a free event. It felt intentional, neither underfunded nor improvised.

Highlights from Day 1 and 2 Workshops

The workshops were simultaneously held in two halls inside the Innovation Hub, with the facilitators rotating through breakout sessions. Attendees, therefore, shuffled between rooms to follow the topics that matched their goals.

The scenes featured design thinkers heading towards UX, AI enthusiasts clustering around development tools, while founders gravitated toward talks on funding or credit systems. It created a subtle “academic” atmosphere and gave speakers room to probe deeper ideas with smaller, niche audiences.

One of the strongest messages on Day 1 came from Oluwaseun Raphael Afolayan, CTO at MyTherapist.ng, who challenged the audience to stop treating code as the starting point of innovation. In a session titled “How to Validate, Build, and Launch in Record Time Without Writing Code Too Soon,” he argued that great products begin with clarity, not code.

“Investors want to invest in a business, not in an app,” he said, urging builders to define their problems in a single sentence, talk to real users, and delay coding “until the manual version breaks.”

His five-step approach reframed startup building as a revenue-first discipline, a sentiment echoed by Halimah Balogun of MONO, who reminded founders that “before revenue, there must be value your customers feel immediately.”

But, if Day 1 handed builders the tools to launch faster, Day 2 asked a blunt follow-up:

What happens when the product finally ships?

During his session, cybersecurity specialist Jamiu Akande, made it clear that startups don’t get hacked by accident, they get hacked because they’re easy targets. He walked the audience through a founder’s version of a fire drill: Which data, if leaked, burns your business to the ground? What process must always be precise? And what service must never go offline, not even for an hour?

The conversation shifted from risk to relevance when Ayooluwa Isaiah, Technical Content Manager at DashO, challenged the room to stop complaining about artificial intelligence replacing jobs. “Install Gemini CLI today,” he said, pressing developers to master the very tools that threaten them.

The chat eventually moved to pure experimentation. 3D product modelling entered, with tools like SwiftXR showing the audience how product design is becoming something founders can do without hiring engineers. A shift that can shrink costs and speed up product iteration.

Tope Oguniran brought it all back to the human layer, reminding builders that users never see blockchain, algorithms, or infrastructure. They only feel the experience. In his words, “UX isn’t what something looks like. It’s how using it feels.”

Builders’ Takeaway: Build fast, yes, but build from real problems, with real people, and launch before you’re comfortable. A product is successful when it’s trusted, protected, and built for customers who need its solution.

Key Highlights from Day 3 (Main Conference)

The main conference felt like a grand synthesis of everything that had unfolded over the week. The morning opened with a founder-story moment from lead organizers, Kamaldeen Kehinde and Ibrahim Zulkifli, who walked the audience through KBTC’s journey from a modest meet-up to a 2,000+ attendee community. They also publicly acknowledged the ecosystem champions whose contributions have kept the lights on (literally and figuratively).

From there, the programme shifted into rich conversations on how African startups can (and should) adopt AI, a blunt session on why every product must start with a business model, and a sweeping tour through dev tools, product scalability, and compliance in new tech sectors.

“Don’t be a jack of all trades. Focus on what’s profitable and aligns with your passion,” warned Hon. Damilola Yusuf Adelodun, Kwara State’s Commissioner for Business, Innovation and Technology. It was a subtle jab at the growing culture of “multi-hustle” founders who spread themselves thin. In a market as tough as Africa’s, the people who stay long enough to win are those who choose one thing and build it exceptionally well.

That focus, according to Ekundayo Ayeni of CareerXpress, must begin with how we train talent. He challenged universities and hubs to ditch theory-only learning and build curriculums that mirror real startup demands. “Learning should be project-based,” he said, adding that without strong talent pipelines, companies will always be stuck catching up on hiring instead of innovating.

Regulation took its turn on the stage when business strategist Riliwan Akeyewale cautioned founders against building in isolation. “When you build, you have to do it with regulators from the start,” he reminded the crowd of an uncomfortable truth in a country where brilliant products often die at the hands of policy.

The day ended with a collective agreement that Ilorin needs more startups and founders who think globally, collaborate locally, and prepare for growth before it arrives. As Zuma Yahaya put it, the ecosystem can’t thrive on isolated effort. Hubs alone can’t do the work… partners, sponsors, and governments must join in.

Builders’ Takeaway:

Don’t spread yourself thin. Focus on what aligns with your passion and creates real value.

Build with foresight, talk to users, and design solutions that can scale.

Talent pipelines, collaboration, and early engagement with regulators are the foundation for startups that endure.

Innovation is dual-phased, it’s what you build today and how it grows tomorrow.

Startups, Projects, and Builders to Watch

1. Startup Build

Startup Build by Kwara Build is a launchpad for ambitious founders that blends startup education with investor-facing pitch sessions, business linkups, and practical mentorship. The program attracts doers who are building solutions and hunting for capital or co-founders. It connects entrepreneurs to peers, mentors, and funding partners who can move the needle. Startup Build teaches founders how to build, and it gives them the tools and community to scale what they’re building.

2. CredLock (FoneFlex)

When Temitayo Fabayo returned to Nigeria after years in the U.S., he built CredLock. According to him, Africa does not need bigger loans, but better access. His startup is taking a bold swing at the system by making device-based lending safer for lenders and less humiliating for borrowers. CredLock uses smart device-locking technology to secure loans for gadgets and services, instead of guarantors and collateral gymnastics. It requires no paperwork circus, no “bring your uncle” requirements.

3. Experience Vision Creations (EVC)

EVC is an Ilorin-based real estate business that’s expanding across major cities. The company helps people move from “interested in land” to actually owning it without the usual maze of unclear titles, hidden fees, or impossible payment plans. Their portfolio spans projects like Almond Garden in Malete, Vision Smart City in Ibadan, and Riyadh Golf City in Asa Dam. In five years, EVC has completed six developments, sold over ₦1 billion worth of property, and helped more than 500 families secure land.

4. CybAfriqué by Olatunji Olaigbe

Cybersecurity may not make the loudest headlines in Africa’s tech scene, but it’s quickly becoming one of its biggest risks. That’s the gap CybAfriqué is filling. The newsletter breaks down the continent’s digital vulnerabilities with clear reporting and context. Topics range from the African data infrastructure, exposing SIM card scams, and unpacking how governments weaponize tech for censorship. CybAfriqué is equipping Africa’s digital builders, policymakers, innovators, and everyday users with the awareness to protect what they’re building.

Critics and Challenges

Product Without Go-to-Market

For all its progress, KBTC still faces the challenge of its audience being heavily tilted toward developers and builders, often leaving out the marketers, content strategists, community managers, and sales professionals who turn products into businesses.

The sessions are rich in engineering insights, but lack the GTM-focused conversations that bridge the familiar “tech gap” of great tools built by talented teams that struggle to find customers. As Ilorin positions itself as a rising tech hub, future editions may need to bridge this divide.

Moreover, since this year’s theme challenges the typical “just build” mindset, it makes sense to spotlight topics that teach techies how to sell what they build the right way.

2. Ilorin as a “Hidden City”

Despite the rising rankings, Ilorin remains under-reported in the tech industry. KBTC25 brought major speakers, but the national media coverage is minimal, and global tech press is virtually absent. The ecosystem risks visibility issues that eventually affect investment, hiring pipelines, and partnership opportunities.

3. Talent Rising Faster Than Opportunity

Ilorin seems to be growing talent faster than it is building companies that can keep that talent. Young developers, UX thinkers, and product builders are getting better every year, but the ecosystem doesn’t yet have the pipelines to convert those skills into scalable startups. And without local angel networks, accelerators, or corporate-backed funding channels, the city risks becoming a training ground whose best minds eventually migrate (to Lagos, Abuja, or anywhere the capital lives).

Final Thoughts: What Comes After KBTC25?

KBTC25 was a three-day statement that Ilorin could host, convene, and inspire some of Africa’s most promising builders. The lessons from the conference were clear on founders’ need to focus, build with foresight, engage regulators early, and design products that meet real needs. Collaboration between hubs, sponsors, the government, and global partners is now non-negotiable, as it’s the lifeline for sustainable growth.

The next steps for Ilorin (and for Nigeria’s emerging ecosystems) are now obvious: retain talent, deepen funding channels, strengthen mentorship, and expand the conversation beyond coders to include marketers and problem-solvers.

KBTC23 and KBTC24 imagined solutions and thought of the future, but KBTC25 wants you to execute them, responsibly, and with scale in mind. Because the “Next Builders” are already here, we only need to give them the tools, trust, and ecosystem to build for the decade ahead.

The Kwara Build Tech Conference may have closed its doors for 2025, but the real work has only just begun.

Inside KBTC25: A 2025-Word Review Of the 8th Kwara Build Tech Conference was originally published in kwarabuild on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Like every planning, we strategized. Like every strategy, we collaborated. Like every collaboration, we connected. Like every connection, we were value-driven. Like every value-driven connection, we were successful. Like every success… WE DID IT!

It all seemed like an arduous task that couldn’t be executed. The good news there however was that, we did it!

Deji Akomolafe with Kwarabuild Team during the Pre-Conference Bootcamp

The planning of KWARBUILD TECH CONFERENCE(Kbtc) 2019 actually started the next 24 hours after KWARABUILD TECH CONFERENCEE 2018. This happened because we were driven with the passion to make our ‘after’ become better than our ‘before’.

Kbtc ’18 left us with indelible lessons to learn. Via the feedbacks we received and that which we gave ourselves, we discovered some loopholes which if such should repeat itself again, the brand –KwaraBuild might become a thing of the past. We ensured we learnt from the past and not just neglect it.

When we received the news this year from one of the attendees based in Kwara State that, “this was the best tech conference she had ever attended…” we smiled. We however went over the moon when another shocking feedback from a Lagos based tech enthusiast screamed over the phone as to how such massive success was recorded in a state like ‘Kwara’ and a city like ‘Ilorin’. One could notice his disbelief from the manners with which he stressed and reverberated the sentence –In Ilorin like a 4-year old wanting to memorize ABC in the shortest time possible because he was promised Chocolate.

KBTC18 at the palms shopping mall, Ilorin

During the Kbtc ’18, we were very happy on the D-day that the event would be extremely good. We were confident to host the largest tech conference in the North Central. We received the shock of our lives when we were told on the D-day after we were done doing the rigorous cleaning and arrangement that the place would not be given to us anymore. We felt it was like a joke until we discovered that it was actually real; it wasn’t a joke. We had to get another venue under duress that same moment and had to mobilize over 1000 participants there. Yes, you could call that an achievement but who would think we could pull that off at such an hour with the Devil whose only one bullet could kill and we’ve used it to kill just his cohorts. Thank God that we still had our bare hands to strangle him to death.

To ensure this doesn’t happened this year, we made our findings well and were fully sure that that venue was available for use by US on THE SAID DATE before we added it on the flyer.

Once bitten, twice shy.

Another thing was the issue of proper planning to matters arising. Because Kbtc ’18 was our first, we went with the approach of tackling a problem as it comes. We cared less if it was urgent or important, as long as it was a problem, we tackled it. This costs us loss of time, energy, resources, and money.

Kbtc ’19 however came with different tactics. No matter the gravity of the matters arising, we follow the already laid plans. This way, we saved ourselves more money, energy, resources and loads of time. At the end, we discovered that some of these matters we thought were intense, were actually mirage.

KBTC19 Success!

Kbtc ’19 was successful because of the following highlighted points:

SPIRITUALITY: Life itself is spiritual. We would be telling a white lie if we should neglect the place of spirituality and not itemize it as the first in our success at Kbtc ’19. Everyone, comprising different religion all had roles to make use of their spirituality to ensure everything went well. All thanks to GOD. He was fully involved!

Kwarabuild Team After KBTC19 success

THE RIGHT TEAM: One of the greatest tools we had at our deployment was having the right team. We were blessed with the right people. We weren’t just group of guys, we were groups of talented, creative, energetic, connected and enthusiastic professionals. Everyone of us is a don in his industry. We ensured we assign roles to everyone according to their capacity. We ensured feedback was given as and when due. Follow ups were made paramount. There’s always something to motivate. We made that available. We weren’t just men alone. We comprise both men and sophisticated, valuable and intellectual women. Having the right team was one of the crucial part of our success.

Communication is key

COMMUNICATION: We ensured that communication was carefully noted, examined and acted upon on roles assigned, updates, information, suggestions and what have you. We created a platform where location would not be our barrier.

STRATEGY: This was the core of everything we did. This was the beginning, middle and end of everything. Here, we made the comparison with every tech conferences that we have attended personally or in groups. We made use of those who would work in our territory and innovated others. We strategized to stop PURSUING; we simply began to ATTRACT. We received a lot of support via our model of ATTRACTING and not PURSUING.

PARTNERSHIPS: This was also one of the zenith of our success at the event. We had partnerships and collaborations with Kwara State Internal Revenue Service, VMware, Virtualize Africa, Plat Technologies, VNsync, and a host of others. We couldn’t have done it alone. All thanks to our partners.

LEVERAGE: We aren’t just tech guys. We practiced what we preached. First, we leveraged on the power of the social media; twitter majorly. On the day of the event, we RANKED 5 on the TRENDING SECTION on Twitter. We moved the world from Ilorin city. We also leveraged on Other People’s Influence (OPI). Everyone that was aware of the conference received the reason to also share on their platform riding on their influence.

These were the top and major process that resulted in our getting results at this year’s conference.

It was challenging, tasking, learning, fun, educative, rewarding, and successful.

We’d like to end with the words we began with:

Like every event, we planned. Like every planning, we strategized. Like every strategy, we collaborated. Like every collaboration, we connected. Like every connection, we were value-driven. Like every value-driven connection, we were successful. Like every success… WE DID IT!

See you at KWARABUILD TECH CONFERENCE 2020!

Pics
Pictures from the event have been uploaded to kwarabuild, view the full album on Google Photos.

A dream achieved by all is a worthy contribution of everyone, we appreciate every hands that has contributed to the success of this event, our amazing team, volunteers, mentors, speakers and philanthropists. Courtesy of Kwarabuild and other groups, the community has witnessed immense growth over the past 1 year.

However, we have to move to the next stage towards ensuring technological and economic growth in our society. Therefore, over the next few years, we shall be focusing our energy at helping startups develop and scale in Kwara.

This is a giant leap for us. We understand that this will be hard. It will be a difficult journey. But we are convinced it’s a worthwhile venture. Wish us the best.

It was in 2018 when we started Kwarabuild, preparing to host the maiden version of our conference, that the word Builder was used to refer to everyone who saw the vision of building a dynamic tech community in Kwara State.

This time, the word Builder shall stand for everybody who believes in a prosperous Kwara that leads in the global community of industrial, technological and economic ecosystems.

Well, if the journey of a thousand miles starts with a step, on the 8th of November, 2019, we shall take a step. All builders in Kwara will be converging for #StartupBuild at MalHub, House 6, Agba Dam road, GRA, Ilorin as we lay the foundation for the future we want to build. We shall discuss and mix ideas. We would also learn some of the necessary things needed for building startups and succeeding in the fast paced competitive world.

Join us as we make history!

#StartupBuild: A meeting of doers and thinkers who are hungry for development and growth. It features startup education, business linkups, and knowledge sharing.

For more interesting posts, join our online community on the following platforms:

· Twitter: @kwarabuild

· Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kwarabuild/

· Medium: https://medium.com/kwara-build
.
