Networking is the baseline for entrepreneurial success

If you are an introvert and an entrepreneur, then this may sound like a torture for you: Attending a networking event.

On the other hand, if you are a flamboyant extrovert, then attending such events is something which you look forward to. But being an introvert, attending networking event, awards night or any such similar event is a big no-no.

But, let us admit: This is a valid business requirement as well. Such networking events provides an enormous platform to find, discover and connect with those whom you are seeking. They can be your potential customer, that hot-shot media baron, your new dependable vendor or a new employee.

So, how to solve the problem? How to attend an event, and connect with the like-minded people, without being embarrassed or feel sorry?

Here are 5 steps, which will help you to overcome this barrier, once for all:

1. Shed Inhibitions & Assumptions Before Entering The Event

The biggest obstacle which a shy, introvert person (an entrepreneur, a professional) faces before any networking event is their assumption and inhibitions. You simply cannot avoid it, if you have been an introvert all your life. But yes, you can learn to dismiss them, gradually.

Remember, the people out there are not existing to eat you alive, or to make fun of you. They are present at the event to make connections, just like you. Be mentally prepared that networking is a fun activity, and it will make you a better entrepreneur and a better person.

With this positive approach, enter the event, and change everything about your own self.

2. Start With A Firm Handshake and Say A Hi

Once you are inside the event, then remember this fact: Everyone is a stranger, yet, everyone is an acquaintance. Every person present there has come to the event to grow his/her network, to be friends with the other person.

Once you identify a particular person, go ahead, and offer a firm handshake. Compliment them on their speech (if that person has just spoken), or their recent social media post (if you can identify that person), or a plain old hi.

Introduce yourself, and start a conversation. Feel light, free and without any guilt or scare. If you have handshaked and said a hi, then 80% of the task is over.

Congratulations, you have become a networker!

3. Remember The Names

During the conversation, always make an effort to remember the names of the person. When you meet next time, or say while having dinner, calling out a person by his/her name is always a positive sign. When you remember the name of a person, then that person will feel obliged to remember your name as well, and a bond, a relationship starts from that point onwards.

In fact, during the conversation as well, try to repeat his/her name, which will induce a new form of connection, and give both of you a new level of confidence.

4. Listen & Show Interest

While speaking with a stranger, there are two things which you need to do for a successful conversation: Listen and then speak; and while listening, show interest in what the other person is saying or trying to express.

If you only speak consistently, and don’t allow the other person to speak, then it becomes a one-way conversation, which will surely die a slow death. On the other hand, when you allow the other person to speak, and when you show interest in what he or she is trying to say, then it becomes a uni-directional conversation, benefiting both the parties.

5. Share A Story

A human mind is wired to remember stories. When conversing with a stranger at an event, try to share a story — story about your life, your business, your profession, your neighborhood, your city or the event itself. Learn to become a storyteller, because this is one skill which will help you forever; be it your business, networking or life in general.

During a networking event, the point of sharing a story is to make a place in that person’s mind. The story will connect you with that person instantly, even if you forget to share your visiting card.

In fact, your story shall be your visiting card for that evening.

Some other general tips while attending any networking event:

If you are feeling too intimidated, and afraid to approach a stranger, then take help from a mutual acquaintance or a connector. You can ask the host of the event, or a business associate for the same.

Whatever you say or do, be sincere. If you are giving a compliment, then don’t be dishonest. If you are sharing a story, then be truthful. You don’t need to impress the other person, you just need to be connected. And connections happen when there is honesty.

Avoid being drunk during such public, networking event. No one likes a drunk, loudly speaking, and misbehaving person, anywhere. And when it comes to business events, then be extra careful. You may lose that prospect or a new vendor, just because of your drinking habit.

Don’t be that person who shoves his/her visiting card to every visible person inside an event. Share your card selectively, only with those with whom you had a conversation or you feel that you will connect in future for any task. And, if you have asked for the visiting card from any person, then do make a follow-up next day. Always.

Being introvert or extrovert is just a state of mind.

Enjoy the networking event, and make an impact, without any fear or inhibitions. The world is waiting for you.

By: Mehul Ghosh (Nov 2017) — www.moolya.global / www.moolyacoin.io

entrepreneur

entrepreneurship

moolya

moolya blog

moolya global

networking guide

networking guide for introvert entrepreneur

The Networking Guide For The Introvert Entrepreneur was originally published in Moolyacoin.io on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Think twice. More than 80% of millennial have joined social networks and they are your consumers, colleagues and decision makers. To help you get on track, here are 5 social media marketing tips for your business:

1. Use all Social Media platform, but format content to optimize traction from each platform:

Just because 40% of your customers use one platform, doesn’t mean you should have only one social media account and posting the same content on all social media platforms won’t do well either. You won’t find the similar audience on every platform. Every platform gives you access to different demographics of the customers. To optimize each platform to the fullest one must do a proper analysis of what sort of customers one may find on each platform and curate the content of your post accordingly.

Facebook is used majorly as a personal network to connect with friends. Here, you cannot post content all about selling, you have to fit in naturally in order to gain customer attention. Twitter is as useful for driving traffic as it is for customer service. Linkedin is different from other social media platform as it is solely for business, Linkedin is more valuable for those in B2B. Youtube is a more engaging way to get your brand out there.

2. Make sure your content aligns with your brand identity and message:

Every message you post on social media leaves a digital footprint. Getting a million likes and a thousand shares on a post is no good if it doesn’t align with your brand. Aligning your posts with your company’s message helps to give a clear picture of your brand. Everything that you post from your account needs to fit within your brand identity.

3. Learn the do’s and don’t’s of hashtags:

Almost, everybody today knows about hashtags but not everybody knows how to use it. Hashtags allow you to reach a wider audience by getting involved in the existing conversation. They are a trending way to improve visibility. Using hashtags on Instagram or Facebook are more focused on the description of the content. While, on twitter, it is more focused on the topic of conversation. Take time to discover the most relevant and trending hashtags and be specific when using them.

Also, make sure to have your own brand hashtag, which creates your unique brand image. It shouldn’t necessarily be your company name but can be something that your brand stands for.

4. Social media monitoring:

What businesses don’t realize is that social media monitoring is their biggest missed opportunity for growth. With the basic social media monitoring, you can keep a track of what is important for your business. It is a great way to learn qualitative information about your customers, to gain key information about your competitors and to keep up with industry influencers. It is all about gaining unique insight about your customers, competitors, and influencers to improve your ROI. This will also act as a basis to prepare a marketing plan.

5. Focus equally on engagement and information:

Not everything you post on social media will get equal attention, but you have to be certain about the brand reputation and post important things even if they don’t get enough traffic. Marketers believe the best way to grow your business is to post useful content, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t focus on promotional content. While it is important to have useful content, it is equally important to have promotional or engaging content so that people can find you in the first place. Remember to have a mix of both popularity and business.

Not everyone will see all of your posts, but with a good marketing strategies, you can improve your chances of gaining the attention of your potential customers.

Pratishtha Patel — moolya.global community manager — 2017–18 / www.moolyacoin.io

5 social media marketing tips to help you achieve your ‘A’ Game was originally published in Moolyacoin.io on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

At a time when innovation, at least the word, is been used, overused, misused, and even abused; dismissing innovation for imitation might sound crazy. But before you write me off, just hear out my argument.

Let me start by asking- how many elements are there in the periodic table? Say 118. Now don’t you think that everything around you is made up of the permutation and combination of these basic elements? Everything! Now, zoom into the atom of a single element. The atom comprises of electrons, protons and neutrons, and these elements differ in one of these constituting elements, one more here or less there. Which means that everything around us is made of these basic elements, and this logic could go on to the level of quarks! Should I say, all of creation is nothing more than the combination of the existing, in newer ways. It is not so much about adding new elements as much about forming new combination of the existing.

The same logic applies to the startup. Since creativity is that of new combinations, innovation starts with imitation. Or, as they say, ‘connecting the dots (albeit in newer ways).’ In the pursuit of being entirely new, one often misses out on the virtues of the existing solutions, and while ‘reinventing the wheel’, you lose out on the precious time. Since time is a vital commodity in the startup game, an entrepreneur is better off looking out for the existing and building on the top of it, versus creating something entirely from scratch.

Remember what Newton very famously noted, ‘if I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulder of giants’. The same applies to entrepreneurs. You should learn to stand on the shoulders of giants, including your predecessors and competitors. But don’t stop there. Innovation has to follow imitation. If you can imitate somebody, the third person can do the same for you, and so on. Hence, you need to top up your imitation with innovation in, at least, some aspect of your business, such as pricing, processes, and customer outreach, amongst others.

OLA, for the most part, imitated Uber, but didn’t stop there. Through services likes OLA Money, and offerings like auto services, shared taxis, shuttles, and outstation taxis, the firm is clearly chipping along. The same is true for Swiggy over Ting Owl, with the former’s value offerings and reach.

To sum up, let’s lower the bar of starting off by looking outwards, and then inwards, which is to imitate before you innovate.

Dr. Pavan Soni — March 20, 2017

Dr. Pavan Soni is an Innovation Evangelist by profession and a teacher by passion.

Ideation is vital for the successful outcome of a startup. Sharpen your axe, before you fell a tree

Many people believe starting a business is a mysterious process. They know they want to start a business, but they don’t know the first steps to take. In this chapter, you’re going to find out how to get an idea for a business–how you figure out exactly what it is you want to do and then how to take action on it.

But before we get started, let’s clear up one point: People always wonder if this is a good time to start their business idea. The fact is, there’s really never a bad time to launch a business. It’s obvious why it’s smart to launch in strong economic times. People have money and are looking for ways to spend it. But launching in tough or uncertain economic times can be just as smart. If you do your homework, presumably there’s a need for the business you’re starting. Because many people are reluctant to launch in tough times, your new business has a better chance of getting noticed. And, depending on your idea, in a down economy there is often equipment (or even entire businesses!) for sale at bargain prices.

Estimates vary, but generally more than 600,000 businesses are started each year in the United States. Yet for every American who actually starts a business, there are likely millions more who begin each year saying “OK, this is the year I am going to start a business,” and then don’t.

Everyone has his or her own roadblock, something that prevents them from taking that crucial first step. Most people are afraid to start; they may fear the unknown or failure, or even success. Others find starting something overwhelming in the mistaken belief they have to start from scratch. They think they have to come up with something that no one has ever done before–a new invention, a unique service. In other words, they think they have to reinvent the wheel.

But unless you’re a technological genius–another Bill Gates or Steve Jobs–trying to reinvent the wheel is a big waste of time. For most people starting a business, the issue should not be coming up with something so unique that no one has ever heard of it but instead answering the questions: “How can I improve on this?” or “Can I do this better or differently from the other guy doing it over there?” Or simply, “Is there market share not being served that makes room for another business in this category?”

Get the Juices Flowing

How do you start the idea process? First, take out a sheet of paper and across the top write “Things About Me.” List five to seven things about yourself–things you like to do or that you’re really good at, personal things (we’ll get to your work life in a minute). Your list might include: “I’m really good with people, I love kids, I love to read, I love computers, I love numbers, I’m good at coming up with marketing concepts, I’m a problem solver.” Just write down whatever comes to your mind; it doesn’t need to make sense. Once you have your list, number the items down one side of the paper.

Next, ask yourself the same question about your business life. Examine what you like and dislike about your work life as well as what traits people like and dislike about you. Finally, ask yourself why you’re seeking to start a business in the first place. Then, when you’re done, look for a pattern to emerge (i.e., whether there’s a need for a business doing one of the things you like or are good at).

They Delivered

Here’s a business startup story that’s a great example of seeing a need and filling it. Entrepreneur magazine is located in Irvine, California, a planned community. Many years ago, there weren’t many fast-food restaurants in the business area. Most were across town, where the neighborhoods were. Two young men in Irvine found this lunch situation very frustrating. There weren’t many affordable choices. Sure, there were some food courts located in strip centers, but the parking lots were really small and the wait was horrendous.

One day, as they were lamenting their lunch problem, one of them said, “Wouldn’t it be great if we could get some good food delivered?” The proverbial light bulb went on! Then they did what many people don’t do–they did something about their idea. Coincidentally, they purchased one of Entrepreneur‘s business startup guides and started a restaurant delivery business.

That is one way to get ideas–listening to your own (or your co-workers’, family’s or neighbors’) frustrations. The opportunities are all there; you just need to search them out. If your brain is always set in idea mode, then many ideas may come from just looking around or reading. For instance, if you had read an article about the shrinking lunch hour, and if you were thinking entrepreneurially, you would say “Wow, maybe there’s an opportunity there for me to do something. I should start researching it.”

Inspiring Moments

Inspiration can be anywhere. Here’s another classic startup story: Ever get charged a fee for returning a video late? Bet you didn’t do anything about it. Well, when Reed Hastings got a whopping $40 late charge, instead of getting mad, he got inspired. Hastings wondered “How come movie rentals don’t work like a health club, where, whether you use it a lot or a little, you get charged the same?” From this thought, Netflix.com, an online DVD rental service, was born. From its start in 1999, Netflix has grown into a big business with revenues topping $1.3 billion.

Getting an idea can be as simple as keeping your eyes peeled for the latest hot businesses; they crop up all the time. Many local entrepreneurs made tons of money bringing the Starbucks coffeehouse concept to their hometowns and then expanding from there. Take Minneapolis-based Caribou Coffee. The founders had what they describe as an “aha moment” in 1990, and two years later launched what is now the nation’s second-largest company-owned gourmet coffeehouse chain. Other coffee entrepreneurs have chosen to stay local.

In other words, you can take any idea and customize it to the times and your community. Add your own creativity to any concept. In fact, customizing a concept isn’t a choice; it’s a necessity if you want your business to be successful. You can’t just take an idea, plop it down and say “OK, this is it.” Outside of a McDonald’s, Subway or other major franchise concept, there are very few businesses that work with a one-size-fits-all approach.

One of the best ways to determine whether your idea will succeed in your community is to talk to people you know. If it’s a business idea, talk to co-workers and colleagues. Run personal ideas by your family or neighbors. Don’t be afraid of people stealing your idea. It’s just not likely. Just discuss the general concept; you don’t need to spill all the details.

Just Do It!

Hopefully by now, the process of determining what business is right for you has at least been somewhat demystified. Understand that business startup isn’t rocket science. No, it isn’t easy to begin a business, but it’s not as complicated or as scary as many people think, either. It’s a step-by-step, common-sense procedure. So take it a step at a time. First step: Figure out what you want to do. Once you have the idea, talk to people to find out what they think. Ask “Would you buy and/or use this, and how much would you pay?”

Understand that many people around you won’t encourage you (some will even discourage you) to pursue your entrepreneurial journey. Some will tell you they have your best interests at heart; they just want you to see the reality of the situation. Some will envy your courage; others will resent you for having the guts to actually do something. You can’t allow these naysayers to dissuade you, to stop your journey before it even begins.

One of the most common warnings you’ll hear is about the risk. Everyone will tell you it’s risky to start your own business. Sure, starting a business is risky, but what in life isn’t? Plus, there’s a difference between foolish risks and calculated ones. If you carefully consider what you’re doing, get help when you need it, and never stop asking questions, you can mitigate your risk.

You can’t allow the specter of risk to stop you from going forward. Ask yourself “What am I really risking?” And assess the risk. What are you giving up? What will you lose if things don’t work out? Don’t risk what you can’t afford. Don’t risk your home, your family or your health. Ask yourself “If this doesn’t work, will I be worse off than I am now?” If all you have to lose is some time, energy and money, then the risk is likely worth it.

Determining what you want to do is only the first step. You’ve still got a lot of homework to do, a lot of research in front of you. Buying this book is a smart first step. Most important: Do something. Don’t sit back year after year and say “This is the year I’m going to start my business.” Make this the year you really do it!

This article originally published on “Entrepreneur“

Starting a Business: The Idea Phase.. was originally published in Moolyacoin.io on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

It is a common knowledge for entrepreneurs to ensure that their customers ultimately become product evangelists and this does not happen overnight when you are constantly trying to push something to them.

When does a customer become an evangelist? It is only when they feel that they are a part of your community and your products are directly addressed to solve their problem. In most cases, the difference becomes simpler when your interaction becomes two-way rather than you dictating a list of product advantages to the customer.

Before Building Online Community

Before you set to building your online community, it is essential to understand your user problems, because ultimately that is the entire essence being a part of a community. Check for similar groups in other social media, that cater to your target audience and list out reasons why or how your community is going to be better in comparison to the existing one.

Before building your online community, try to answer these questions.

Why you are creating the online community?

Who is your target audience?

What problems are you trying to solve?

Are there any existing groups dealing with similar topics?

How long can you spend on community development?

What is going to be your value addition?

Once you realize that your basics are resolved and you are personally satisfied with the responses, start inviting the initial set of community members whom you might have known even offline.

Growing Community

Once you invite the basic members and have a very friendly rapport with them, you will slowly realize that your online community has slowly grown organically without you having the need to invite more members.

It is because, at this point, your first few members who were directly interacting with you would automatically realize the effect of the community on them and invite others to share the same experience with them.

This is exactly how most leaders are formed, they share their knowledge to their initial set of followers and this in-turn will create a ripple effect and will soon amass a large following for their deeds.

As you grow your initial set of members will start resolving new members’ queries giving you more time to strategizing and scaling the community across specific niche topics in your domain.

Content Sharing

Again as stated, the next step in the early stages of community development is interacting with your early audience. One interesting way of responding to your community would be through content.

Ask them relevant questions, try answering them or help them connect with someone who can actually answer them. You can later incorporate these responses and add their suggestions to your content which would ultimately result in them sharing your content instead of you spamming people to share your contents.

As Canva’s Head of Social Strategy had once advised, “Community building is to be giving, supportive and helpful without the expectation of a return. I feel if you are kind and giving that people will remember it and do the same for you when the time comes. Respect and reciprocation are earned bonuses from your community.”

Value Addition

It is essential to realize that the success of a community does not depend on the size of a community, but rather on the number of meaningful conversations and problems resolved within the group. Therefore, it is absolutely okay to grow your community slow in the initial stages to add value to every member.

There were many instances of online communities that scaled instantly and ultimately shut down because of lack of relevant activities in the group. What happens after a certain stage when there are no strict guidelines is that new members might start spamming the group with random posts.

Ensure that each post is not only approved by a moderator but also almost instantly because a post that is approved after 6 months might not have any impact on members contributing to the group.

One particular example of this is Reddit community, over the years many have successfully launched a huge community in subreddits with their strict guidelines. The ones who have managed to crack reddit moderator rules have grown their influence in the community.

Another arena where you can add value to your community members would be to invite influencers and thought leaders to the group at least once a month and encourage community participation with the guest through an AMA sessions.

Offline Community Development

Never forget the impact of offline personal interaction with an individual is much higher than online interaction. Your community is almost very similar to the team you have offline. You can organize small meetups at regular intervals to meet with some of your community members and interact with them on a personal level.

This will give them the impression that you truly care for them and they have very high regard for your brand from then. If you have enough bandwidth, you can also organize large conference once a year for your brand and then invite your community members for the same.

While many major brands do this, even early stage startups have realized the importance of offline community development since year one. There are meetups happening in companies during weekends or after office hours almost every month to engage with their fellow entrepreneurs or target audience to share the developments in the company also to get necessary feedback regarding the same.

During these meetups/conferences, you can invite other guest speakers in your industry much like the online community development activity and provide the platform them to interact with influencers. These offline events will also enable your community to understand your brand much better and then turn to become your evangelists in the future.

While much has been already said and discussed community development, it is important to remember that unlike marketing campaigns, community development activities don’t have any specific deadline. You need to carry out or allocate specific resources to keep up the community work as you scale and also ensure that it is about the community and not about the brand in particular.

The Best OCD For An Online Entrepreneur: Online Community Development was originally published in Moolyacoin.io on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
