“If it does not exist, create it!”

While looking at a large collection of pepper grinders in the kitchen department of a mall, I said to myself: “Stop complaining about what is missing; Create it!” The products that were in front of my eyes resembled an army of soulless clones where any sign of singularity seemed to be wiped out by mass production. The exciting adventure of designing and producing my own salt-and-pepper grinder started just like that, as a challenge of a dissatisfied consumer.

After 15 years of crushing numbers for the banking industry, it seemed like the time has come for me to follow my passion and to move into an uncharted territory. After all, life is short and it definitely seems even frighteningly shorter when you are 43 years old.

“The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one.” Elbert Hubbard

Looking back, I’ve always been fascinated by arts and design. I spent my childhood playing with Lego bricks and creating imaginary worlds that later turned into sketches. However, without proper design education, I never dared to dream of transforming an idea into a real product — until this day.

Without connections to the design world or the wood industry, I started with a computer, pencils, paper and my ambition. I was clueless about the numerous challenges that I will be facing until my idea is finally transformed into a real-life product. I was like an unfit forty-something guy who heard for the first time about Mount Everest and decided to climb it after watching a documentary. To make the venture even more difficult, I wanted to use the noblest types of wood and an artisanal fabrication based in Europe.

First sketch of OFF-AXIS model

Soon enough, I faced numerous challenges that made me question everything. I was very close to giving up, particularly when I received the first prototype. The process of crafting my idea into a real-life product came with numerous obstacles that made me second-guess my every move and even question my choice of deciding to leave my career behind.

Thanks to my family and friends, I resisted making a bonfire using my prototypes and my folders of sketches. However, I was saved by an international bunch of enthusiastic “punks” that joined me and brought their expertise. They soon became my Sherpas and my guides. Without their support, this adventure wouldn’t have been possible.

After months of trying to solve obstacles that seemed very hard to overcome, and after an impressive number of rejected prototypes, we eventually reached one important milestone. We finally launched our first collection, OFF-AXIS.

We knew that we were far from reaching our dreams yet, where we are an established company with a soul and much-loved products. Nonetheless, looking back at our creative process gives us the strength and courage to keep climbing our own Mount Everest. One thing is sure — when you have a reliable and supportive team, nothing seems impossible.

neotus.ch

From banking to pepper mill designing was originally published in neotus on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
