Fostering Trust: A Source-Centric Approach

Safeguarding sources is a critical responsibility for journalists. Ensuring interviewee safety, offering a platform for their narratives, contextualizing their experiences, and showing respect are all vital aspects of this process. At the heart of these practices is trust-building. By cultivating trust with sources, journalists gain access to better information, leading to more impactful stories.

This article aims to offer some valuable insights and strategies for building trust with sources and enhancing journalistic integrity. Here my eight golden rules:

Disclose the publication and its political leanings: The publication’s stance may influence a source’s decision to engage with a journalist. It is essential to be transparent about the publication’s politics to encourage open communication.

Provide your portfolio: Sharing a carefully curated portfolio allows sources to see relevant examples of your work and understand how you handle similar stories.

Communicate the story angle: Clearly explaining the story’s focus helps avoid misunderstandings and ensures that sources are comfortable with the final product.

Exercise patience: Building trust takes time. Journalists should be willing to invest time in fostering relationships with sources, even if they are not ready to speak on the record immediately. Keep professionalism and empathy as priorities.

Accurately represent opinions: Ensure that the quotes used in the story accurately reflect the source’s views, and remain open to answering questions and addressing any concerns that sources may have. Strive for openness while maintaining journalistic integrity and impartiality.

Bear in mind follow ups: Journalists have a responsibility to support their sources even after a story is published, by updating them on any changes or developments and providing resources for assistance if needed.

6 Golden Rules of Journalism to Forge Unshakeable Credibility with Sources was originally published in Talent Reporter on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
