Sometimes we need to lose ourselves in a fantasy world in order to gain perspective on our own cultures and habits.

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet” by Becky Chambers, is a clever look at humanity. Chambers creates a complex world. A world in which she encourages us to draw comparisons between her characters’ interspecies relations, and the way in which we, as humans, behave so appallingly to fellow humans.

Humans are forever judging each other. The most arrogant and dangerous of us believe our way is the highway and everyone else should follow suit.

Our protagonist; Rosemary, is an exemplary character. She tries her best to be open-minded, accepting, and non-judgemental. We can learn from her willingness to educate herself about other species and cultures. I particularly admire the many ways she extends kindness and humanity to other species.

She adopts the platinum rule. She does not treat others as she would like to be treated. No. She treats others as they would like to be treated.
