“We are all the same in different ways.”

The Premise —

Molly, a maid at Regency Grand Hotel, is termed as odd and socially inept and is obsessed with cleaning and proper etiquette. One day, she discovers the body of the wealthiest guest, Charles Black, in his suite. This brings the infamous question, who could have done it? Molly is dragged deeper to the point where she is the prime suspect.

Thoughts —

I came across this book through Instagram. As a big-time mystery/crime book fan, I had to give this a shot. The Maid is not the strong and vicious kind of crime novel, but it has its good points.

First is the language. The language is elegant and polished. It is suitable for people who are just starting to read or have a limited vocabulary. Although, the logophiles will love the protagonist, Molly Gray.

“What a day it has been, what a day indeed. It is one I’d rather forget than remember, and yet it doesn’t work that way. We bury the bad memories deep, but they don’t go away. They’re within us all the time.”

The second is the style of writing. The author oscillates between the past and present of the protagonist. However, you will never find yourself lost in the transition. The elements are explained with utmost detail, which might be daunting for some readers.

As an avid reader of crime, I could make out the heroes’ villains before I even reached halfway. The results were expected, but Nita ends it with a twist. Throughout the book, you will feel sympathetic towards the protagonist, but that will most definitely help you to be proud of our little Molly. The character grows on you as you continue reading and will keep you attached to her.

“Today at work, I found a guest very dead in his bed. Mr. Black. The Mr. Black. Other than that, my work day was as normal as ever.”
