As you’ve already heard, Medium has updated the Medium Partnership Program (MPP).

Under the new terms, writers will be able to make money two ways:

  • read time, just like always.
  • referrals. When readers join through your referral page, you get half the proceeds for as long as their memberships last.

There’s a lot of speculation about whether these changes will be good for writers. I can see the points of both people who think it can be a huge negative and those who consider it a positive.

The amount that’s available from each subscription for payment for reads will go down, it’s true.

But, Ev Williams confirmed in his comments that he hopes this will expand the Medium membership base. If all goes well, there will be a bigger pool of money available, even with half of membership revenue going to the writer who brought the new reader in.

And, if you are someone who can bring in readers, this new model can be a big win. You get half of the membership fee as long as their membership continues. Not to mention getting paid when people read your stuff.
