Metaphor, figurative language that compares one thing to another, and usually a comparison not literal or having any relation to reality, is more pervasive in our thinking and speech than we sometimes realize. Author James Geary claims we speak six metaphors a minute. Metaphor in our speech is largely unconscious. Metaphor in our writing has an unconscious attraction to the reader.
