The best eco-thrillers draw people into a world they can relate to, where a dramatic plotline puts the reader on the front line of environmental change. Very often, the protagonists are not activists themselves. The stories are simple human dramas played out against the consequences of human activity on the natural world.

The following stories each take snapshots of life set against a changing climate — but in each case from a different perspective.

Set In The Present

The location in Waiting for Gordo by Sue Knight is an exotic corner of the world we live in today. The story takes place on a tiny island in the Indian Ocean. Written with a light touch, it will make you smile, but then make you shiver at the sinister undertones. Also, what a great name for a book! Apparently, it was originally destined to be called Small Island, but Andrea Levy got there first.
