Toward a more relational J.J.
How I’m reconfiguring my approach to writing online
triggered a rare form of anxiety I carry around like a pesky genetic bur. It’s where this little prickly seed digs deep into my brain until the thought has tumbled around so often it’s carved out a new section for itself.
It’s become rarer and rarer in my life as time goes on, but these last few months it’s grown its needly wings again and started ping pong stabbing every wall inside my head.
This inception of thought was simple, but oh so unwanted:
“Now that Medium has finally become ‘relational’, how can I try to make a living off of writing?”
Must Keep Writing
I won’t get into specifics since most of you have heard thousands of people drone on about it, but basically:
- In Ev’s worldview, the internet has turned into a transactional marketplace, where nobody cares about who writes something, but purely about what they can do for the reader
- He wanted to bring Medium back to a more ‘relational’ place where the author and publication are more important than the specific headline/image/content.
