For any of you that write math or engineering articles, you’ll know that superscripts and subscripts are pretty much essential. Medium doesn’t have native support for adding superscripts other than single digit numerals (by typing the caret “^” character followed by the numeral to be superscripted) and no means whatsoever of adding subscripts. The numeric codes corresponding to Unicode superscripts and subscripts can be input directly using a series of keystrokes, but it’s a long and laborious process. Casey Botticello’s Medium Subscript Text and Medium Superscript Format article has more info on the subject and a list of characters which can be copied and pasted.

Superscript and Subscript Utilities

In the meantime while we wait for Medium to improve its editor, we can use one of these. There’s a multitude of them online. Just Google “superscript generator” and you’ll find a selection. They’re easy to use with a single panel for text input and a second panel for superscripted text. Some of the utilities will produce subscripts also or allow you to change the font style. The advantage of these neat apps is that you can convert a string of characters simultaneously without copying and pasting, character by character.
