Why Medium Might Be My New Instagram

A photographer’s perspective on Medium vs Instagram

Instagram Is Not Designed for Photographers

Instagram kinda sucks.

I said it.

As a photographer I don’t take a single photo on a trip, I take multiple. Hundreds in fact. Those hundreds are then curated, edited, and brought down to (if I’m lucky) around a dozen. I want to share those dozen but Instagram does not do multiple photos well unless I create 12 separate posts which not only gets spammy, but you begin losing photos in the noise.

If you attach them all onto a single post, Instagram weirdly crops all the photos.

They’re also all hidden behind the first photo.

Not ideal.

Okay, So Use 500px or Anything Else

Sites like 500px, websites designed for photographers do work pretty well! But unless you’re active within photography…who’s heard of 500px?

It’s great for a portfolio which you can link to prospective clients (as is your own website) but if you want eyes on your work, comments, appreciation (or critique) you’ll be hard-pressed to find that there (just like your own website without major SEO).

Medium

I can attach as many photos as I need in a Medium post.

It’s easy on the eyes, users can scroll through a series of photos.

I can easily keep the theme of the photo shoot consistent.

I can attach narrative to each photo if I choose.

I get eyes on my work as it’s naturally attached to a large blogging platform.

I can keep a portfolio under my own publication.

It’s just…better.

Did I miss anything?
