Feminist.AI’s Michelle Carney and Anmol Anubhai teamed up today to teach you how to make your own AI Art with RunwayML, in anticipation of the mlux event next week!

🆒 so.. What is Runway? 🤖🎨🖼

Runway is one of our favorite tools for GANs, Style Transfers, and so much more generative ML and AI — and one of the tools we can see in the future helping artists and creators use AI to generate new art! They have built a tools that makes machine learning easy and accessible for all types of creatives. Independent creators and studios use Runway to generate new shoe designs, create music videos, reimagine interior design, and more!

Today’s tutorial is perfect if you’re looking to revamp your profile photo or style-ize some of your existing art!

If you’re interested in learning more, be sure to join the mlux Tech Talk on Tuesday, July 27th, with Runway co-founder, Cristóbal Valenzuela! Tickets and details can be found at bit.ly/mlux0721

Wait… Style Transfers? GANs? What are those?!

Simply put: Style transfer is the task of changing the style of an image in one domain to the style of an image in another domain. GANs, or generative adversarial networks, are a method to create new images based on prior images. Runway makes it easy to use a variety of these models, and much more, in creative ways. You do not need to know how to code in order to make your own AI Art!

So let’s say you want to AI-ify your profile pic…

Step 1. Go to Runway’s Workspace, and log in (or sign up). Runway is free for a good amount of time, which is amazing because it is using GPU, then it is easy to add credits for more GPU later.

Step 2. In the upper left, selecte “ML Lab” (instead of “Sequel”), and select “Stylization.” These are the models that we can use to do style transfers!

Step 3. Explore the different Stylization libraries! You can upload your pictures and “van gogh-itize” it, anime filter it, turn it into a plant, even upload two pictures and transfer one picture’s style to another picture

Step 4. Play around and make your new photos! Here are some different new profile pictures for Michelle using dioscvri’s print, postwook’s collage, and the Face2Plant (MUNIT) style transfer!

big thanks to dioscvri and postwook!

Other fun explorations in AI Art…!

Anmol is not only a full time UX Researcher, she is also an illustrator! We wanted to hear from her as an artist: what are her thoughts on AI-ifying her own art? Or using her art to style transfer on her own image?!

The Monet-style removed some of the detailed lettering, but Anmol really loved the texture it added to her mixed media watercolor illustration!

Anmol took her profile picture and applied her own illustration style to it — and we were surprised by the over-indexing on the green hair!

We also tried it with the feminist.ai logo and more….! Here are some highlights….

What will you make with Runway?

The best way to learn is to DIY — so try some of the models for yourself in the ➡️Runway Model Playground⬅️, and share with us! Be sure to tag @mluxmeetup #mlux #madewithrunway
