I’ll See You

Step outside.
Take a breath.
Don’t look back,
That closed door won’t give you the answers you want
Take another step.
Take another breath.

“Manage your expectations,”
You tell yourself
In someone else’s voice

Place one foot ahead of the other,
Start moving down the street
And try to ignore the hazy, surreal feeling rising inside you
And the world shaking,
Shaking only for you

Take another breath.
Take another step.
Feel the bite of the cold wind
And focus, focus on the sensation
Feel the bite of the cold wind
Instead of the heat, heat, heat rising inside you
Clawing up your throat, across your chest, behind your eyes

“Manage your expectations,”
As if it could be that easy
To wrestle with your reality

Take another step.
Take another breath.
Remember it isn’t final,
Probably.

“Manage your expectations,”
You tell yourself
In your own voice

Take another breath,
Take another step,
Keep moving down the street
And let the wind wash over you
And cool the rising heat inside

“Manage your expectations,”
You tell yourself,
Even though you don’t know what it means
You will,
You will.

Take another breath,
Take another step,
It will get easier.
It will.
