We are so excited to share Tiffanie’s story which discusses Fat acceptance, fatphobia, and her personal relationship with fatness.

Head over to “Fat and Proud” to read her story.

How has your body image evolved over time?

My body image has been a roller coaster and is still something I actively work on. I’ve gone from never wearing a dress or skirt without tights or leggings in fear of showing the cellulite on my thighs, to telling the internet that I’m fat. Developing a positive body image specifically came from the support and love of my friends, and the intersectional feminist community I gained a la the internet.

“We must fight against the notion that our weight is synonymous with our health, and not fall victim to diet culture and food restriction disguised as body positivity.”

Why is it important to discuss body discrimination like fatphobia?

Our society by default dislikes what is not considered the norm. Be that fat people, people with genetic facial or body differences, little people. It’s something that is getting better as these groups speak up against the negative connotations, but it is still not enough for it not to be considered ‘the norm’. By discussing these topics on platforms such as Femsplain, we’re highlighting why it is problematic, and the actions we can take against these negative stereotypes.

“By coming to terms with the word “fat” and not letting society’s fatphobic views define me, I was able to reach a level of self-love I didn’t know was possible.”

What body image-related topics do you hope writers explore in their submissions?

I would love to see writers take a unique angle on the body image prompt. It doesn’t have to be as literal as my, fat and proud, but overall, should speak to their truth.
