Feren OS 2022.10 — nevermind, yet another minor release

Before I do the announcement part of this whole announcement, let me just get these out of the way now: This is still based on Ubuntu 20.04, not 22.04 (that’s normal), and this is hopefully the last ‘calm before the storm’ release before Feren OS’s new Store is completed and makes its grand debut into Feren OS…

But there again I said all of that last time… so this time I won’t make any promises about a release date for Feren OS’s upcoming big release until I’m absolutely sure it is finally ready to release. For now, minor releases will come to at least refresh Feren OS during the time before the big release.

Ah well, today, I’m proud to announce the release of Feren OS 2022.10, another minor Feren OS release. These releases are a regular occurence that usually occur every 4 months and provide the latest updates to Feren OS at the time of the ISO’s release right from the get-go.

This release is the first release to share codename initials with an older release

First of all, I would like to point out that this release of Feren OS is officially the first ever version of Feren OS to share codename initials with a past Feren OS release. This release, codenamed ‘Lanthanum’, shares the initial L with Feren OS 2016.x, all codenamed ‘Lucid’.

Feren OS officially has enough releases to have looped the alphabet, and that is honestly quite crazy to think about.

Updating from 2022.07

As always, it’s simple to update to Feren OS 2022.07. Just go into the Update Manager, hit Refresh, and install any updates that might be there. Once you’ve done that, congrats, you’re now on Feren OS 2022.10!

NOTE: If some packages fail to download, cancel the update, Refresh, and try again.

Changes

New wallpapers

Just like every single other release ever made of Feren OS, there are a new set of wallpapers to choose from.
With this version comes new wallpapers from Unsplash, as is the norm, so you have new and fresh wallpapers to try and enjoy on your Feren OS device.

Optional Mozilla Firefox Configuration updates

The Optional Mozilla Firefox Configuration was also updated to rebase its version of Firefox-CSSTheme-GTKless on the latest release of it, bringing some bug fixes for menus, and improved titlebar buttons contrast on bright themes.

In the backend, the package providing the optional Firefox configuration is also now able to automatically update the version of Firefox-CSSTheme-GTKless in use, by Firefox profiles using the optional configuration, while installing or updating the optional configuration.

Updated KDE Plasma

Finally, KDE Plasma was also updated to the latest version at the time, being KDE Plasma 5.25.5, bringing with it plenty of bug fixes.

That’s… literally it. To be honest there’s so few changes this release that I had to find even the smallest changes to list here so it wouldn’t JUST be “the wallpapers changed”. The reason there’s so few changes, of course, is below.

Development continues on Feren OS’s big release…

Development is continuing on Feren OS’s big release, however, behind the scenes. While there isn’t much to show yet, Feren OS itself is undergoing a major refactoring effort during this rebase, and the upcoming Store is also slowly progressing, with the Ice module it’ll have getting close to being at a working stage in said upcoming Store’s backend, ‘Storium’, after undergoing a refactor of its own.

What’s ‘Storium’ and ‘Ice’ you say? You will find out in due time just what they are, and why they are important. For now, I will leave you with this completely unrelated screenshot from a pre-Alpha build of Feren OS’s big release:

A Terminal window is opened on a Feren OS Pre-Alpha Build, inside of a VirtualBox powered Virtual Machine. Below the Terminal window you can notice Vivaldi and Store are missing icons, and behind it you can see a green stairs like wallpaper. But, inside of the Terminal window, you can read something about a Server Name, on “pactl info”’s output, being “PulseAudio on PipeWire 0.3.48”.

Reminder: Feren OS Classic reaches end of life in April

At the end of April next year, Feren OS Classic will officially be discontinued, never to get security updates or software updates ever again, outside of major updater fixes and updates.

For 32-bit users, this means you have until May 2023 before Feren OS no longer is supported on your hardware. For 64-bit users, this means you have just until then to make the decision to transition to Linux Mint with the Major Updater, or update to the latest and greatest Feren OS with the Major Updater.

I do plan on doing something very very special on the week, if not the day, Feren OS Classic reaches end of life, next year, so do look forward to that.

Conclusion

Other than that, you can download Feren OS 2022.10 from the usual place of the Feren OS website. Enjoy Feren OS’s latest release!
