A word that describes FIFAWWC 2023 so far is breath-taking. From the debutants- Morocco clinching a second round spot ahead of the World number 2 to Matha Cox scoring the an astonishing free-kick.
Below are the stats you might have missed out on.

  • The fastest goal so far was scored by Marta Cox in the 69th second of their game against France, this was also the highest scoring match, producing 9 goals in 100 minutes.
  • There were five goalless draws across the matches played and two of them involved the Super-Falcons who are also one of the very few teams to keep two clean sheets.
  • Still on clean sheets- Japan, Switzerland and the outliers- Jamaica were the three teams that kept three clean sheets in their first three matches. Japan also had the highest number of goals (11) scored in the group stage- followed by Sweden and Netherlands who scored 9 goals each.
  • Germany becomes the first team not to progress in a group stage despite a 5+ Goal difference, and despite this failure, Alexandre becomes the second player to score 8 goals in consecutive tournaments
  • Despite not starting the first game-Lauren James has the most direct goal contribution ahead of any player with 3 goals and 3 assist and becomes the first English player to to be directly involved in 5 goals+ in a single game at the Men or Women’s world cup. Wonderkid?

  • With 23% possession Japan is the first country to record a 3+ goals victory despite having less than 25% of the possession in their Match against Spain, they also spent 45 seconds in the opponent’s box out of 45 minutes, registering a goal during the process. All the three touches in the first half also led to a goal. Clinical?
  • Asisat Oshoala’s goal against Australia means she becomes the first African player to score in 3 world cups. The Super falcons were also one of the 9 teams not to lose any group stage match, this is the first time they would be avoiding a defeat at the group stage. Monument.
  • The highest group stage defeat was inflicted by Netherlands on Vietnam , and Japan has the highest assists (10) recorded in the group stage
  • Linda Caicedo (18 years,158 dAYS) is the youngest player to score in an edition of a Women’s world cup since 2003 when Marta and Kara Lang did so.

  • 3 out of four CAF representatives made it out of the group stage- this is the highest percentage (75%) from any continent in terms of success rate apart from the host continent New Zealand.
  • Spain scored 3 goals in 6 minutes against Zambia and Japan scored two goals in 2 minutes against Costa-rica, the fastest sequence we have seen in the tournament.
  • There have been 128 goals scored, 78 assists recorded, 22 penalties awarded and 17 of them scored.
