Last year, ChatGPT exploded onto the digital scene, and many people have been wondering how these types of technology are going to impact job markets and the arts and humanities going forward.

AI, or large language models, have already had an impact on Medium, and if you’ve explored the fiction tag here, there’s a decent chance you’ve encountered some of ChatGPT’s storytelling — or lack thereof.

But although ChatGPT may struggle to tell even a satisfying short story, there are also real possibilities and real concerns about AI-generated fiction on Medium and beyond.

There’s a lot to speculate about as AI-generated content evolves, including Medium’s strategy to deal with it. Here’s a recent poll run by Medium CEO Tony Stubblebine on how Medium should approach this topic.

And here’s a space to discuss! (No chatbots allowed. 😉)

  • Have you ever used AI to help you write a fiction story? If not, would you?
  • Can you tell when you’re reading an AI-generated fiction story on Medium? What are the signs?
  • How do you think Medium should deal with AI data scraping? Is a hard paywall the answer?
  • If you could opt out of AI data training, would you? If you could be paid for it, would you opt in?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments, and feel to free share any other questions you might have!
