“Must I remind you that we’re all Americans now?” asked Col. Beaumont wearily.

“I know, Father,” said Arden, “but I don’t like calling in Yankee cavalry to end this range war.”

“I don’t like it, either,” Beaumont replied. “After all, I fought four years for the Confederacy. But too many of us settlers are being killed. If we need Yankees to stop it, so be it. I hear this 10th Cavalry Regiment is the best.”

“Why do they call them Buffalo Soldiers?” Arden wondered.

“I don’t know. Maybe they’re great buffalo hunters. Anyway, I’m sure they’ll get the job done.”

In 1866, Congress established six all-Black regiments to help rebuild the country after the Civil War. The 10th Cavalry, one of them, was given the nickname Buffalo Soldiers. National Park Service.
