A drabble is a work of fiction that is exactly 100 words, but this is a drabble and a half. Today is RWDrabble 2.0 #056. The random drabble word is coffer, and your story must contain 150 words.

Thunder boomed in the distance, shaking the house. Lights flickered, threatening to blanket the home in darkness.

Kariella had expected clear skies today, so the storm was an unwanted surprise. Midwestern weather, much like her husband, did what it wanted.

Soon, she’d escape them both.

Kariella made her way into the basement, taking care not to cut her foot on the beat-up steps. She already had enough injuries.

She walked quickly toward the old furniture in the corner, searching for the coffer that held pieces of her freedom. Nothing was missing. Her family’s passports and cash were still tucked inside.

Kariella headed upstairs to find her children’s raincoats and umbrellas. She wanted to protect them from every storm — the one outside and the one they called Daddy.

“Where are we going?” her youngest asked, surprised they were leaving in this weather.
