A drabble is a work of fiction that is exactly 100 words. No more. No less.

Today is Twisted September Drabble Challenge #269. The random drabble word is raiment, and you must also include a marching band in your story.

I arrived for my scheduled hearing 37 minutes early, but my husband was already there. He stood beside a man adorned in typical lawyerly raiment — a conservative black suit, fully buttoned. The two men glared at me as a noisy wall clock ticked away the minutes.

Tick. Tick. Tick. Almost time to start my new life.

“I have reviewed your request for dissolution of marriage, Ms. Jacobs,” the judge announced, “and I hereby order…”

Blaring trumpets and booming drums drowned out the rest of the judge’s sentence. Leave it to my husband to disrupt divorce proceedings with a marching band.

Shoutout to Nancy Oglesby and Fiction Shorts for this fun daily challenge!
