Checkmate!
Wasn’t just a game, after all!
A drabble in response to the daily random word Passed, Day 247! The twist is that the story must include a horse!
“Sir! We need to do something about the situation! The British have almost reached the capital”!
The horseman sounded anxious! His horse was equally agitated.
“Yes, as I had said earlier, we’ll discuss the issue! Let us finish this game. Meanwhile, rest your horse, and have some supper.”
The Nawab of Awadh went back to his game, as his opponent challenged him.
“Save your queen, Sir!”
Enjoying this twist, the Nawab smiled,
“Sometimes, to win, you've to sacrifice your queen!”
“Checkmate!” He declared!
And while the Nawabs were indulging in their favourite timepass, time passed by them!
Rest is history!
An imagined dialogue from a short story by Munshi Premchand (1924), about the Nawabs, obsessed with chess, during the British colonial era in India.
