Rachel didn’t expect James to leave. She took the breakup hard, shocked by the way James’ absence upended her world.

He’s been gone for two months, and Rachel is rearranging furniture to suit her preferences. She’d let James decide everything before. Now, she drags the new rocking chair to the window, angling it for a view of the night sky.

She sits down with a cup of her favorite tea, in a mug from her new dishes, in a pattern that James detested. She sips her tea and says to the quiet space of her old, new room, “Welcome home.”
