FICTION | DRABBLE | DAY 111
Customs Are for Fools
Why do you want to wear a Dashiki shirt to our wedding?
Random Drabble Challenge Word — Custom.
“You’re a fool,” Anne shouts. Her strawberry blond hair frames an angry-looking ivory face dotted with cute freckles.
“You’re beautiful when you’re mad.”
“Tom, don’t patronize me.” Breathe, Anne, breathe… “Why would you want to wear a traditional African Dashiki shirt at our wedding?”
“My shirt was custom-made for me by my godmother. I promised her that it would be my honor to wear it at my wedding before she passed away. The shirt is embroidered with gold thread that symbolizes fertility and wealth.”
“You’re not wearing, that! It’s me or the shirt. Choose.”
“Okay. Are you sure?”
Author’s note:
This story is inspired by Nancy Ogelby’s Random Drabble Challenge Word for today and my custom-made traditional African shirt.
It was given to me as a present by a friend on my birthday. I fell in love with my white and gold embroidered shirt and wore it regularly.
It nearly got me in trouble in a conservative neighborhood one night.
