Don’t rain on my parade today, Emily thought as the thunder rolled outside.
She’d finished her article at dawn. She figured she’d send it after her doctor’s appointment.
Stepping into the office five minutes early and only slightly wet, she heard the nurse ask, “Emily Harper?”
After the tests, the doctor’s fearsome frown frightened her when he said, “There’s something concerning. We need further tests.”
The room spun. Emily clutched her briefcase — the article forgotten.
Back in the waiting room, her phone buzzed with a cryptic message, “Deadline extended. Are you okay?”
Somehow, someone knew more than she had shared.
