Because double drabbles (200 words) are short, please consider staying on this page for at least 30 seconds so your time counts as a read. And while you’re here, a clap, highlight, comment, or all of them is greatly appreciated. It lets me know you were here.

Roland didn’t care about the time, thunderstorms, or blueberry pie. He wasn’t a man riddled with mundane thoughts, but thoroughly enjoyed solving puzzles. That is, until recently, after nonsense entered his dreams, and falling into a deep sleep was impossible.

When the puzzler closed his eyes each night, words nipped at his mind like a vulture. Yet none of them made sense. Out of necessity, Roland created irrational sentences until he weaved them into a story, hoping he’d remember them come morning.

“Take care of your nuts!” was Monday’s offering. On Tuesday, the words warned him, “Keep your pants zipped and away from the bars.” For the rest of the week, encrypted messages plagued him.

After days of insomnia and sleep deprivation, Roland lay on his therapist’s couch, crying the blues.
