“Swing low, sweet chariot,
Comin’ for to carry me home!I looked over Jordan and what did I see,
Comin’ for to carry me home!
A band of angels comin’ after me,
Comin’ for to carry me home!”
That sweet hymn drifted from the cotton fields when Josie, the house slave, said, “Massa, you should stop ’em singin’ dem songs.”
“Why would I? More cotton gets picked when they’re singing.”
“The Underground Railroad uses dem songs. Listen to the melody.
‘Left foot, peg foot, travelling on, follow the Drinking Gourd’.”
Josie never saw the rest of the crop come in.
