I stood in the kitchen doorway, watching her watch cartoons. She loved animation, and I enjoyed listening to her squeal with laughter as the boulder rolled over Wiley Coyote and the Road Runner escaped.

It was good to hear her laughter. She’d had a rough time of it since Maurice (pronounced moreece) died. Although he was old, she loved him so much.

He’d lived 84 cat years or 17 human years. He was so gentle with her and spent most of his day sitting in her lap. If she were too busy, he would stretch out on the windowsill warmed by the sun. Everybody…
