The road ahead was closed by the flooding river.
Her hands gripped the steering wheel. Sweat trickled into her eyes.
The storm had closed the only road off the island.
The water was rising fast.
Robert wiped her brow and, as he pulled away, placed a hand on her right knee.
“What do we do now?” he asked softly. Maybe this is God’s judgment on us, on what we did.”
After a brief moment, she said, “You know, Robert, God made our desire, too.
Will you love me one last time?”
As she turned toward him, her alarm clock buzzed.
