I caught the disease from one of my friends.

We blamed it on age initially, but in truth, it’s contagious.

We all agreed it’s the kids’ fault. We probably picked it up from those benches by the pool, waiting for their swimming lessons to finish.

Or maybe we caught it from standing in the biting wind on the sidelines of Sunday morning soccer games.

Or maybe we became susceptible during the times we spent in toy stores trying to select another unique, special birthday present for another of their friends’ never-ending circuit of birthday parties.

No wonder we end up housebound as a result.

No wonder we tell fibs about fictional obligations just so we can stay home and deal with this illness.

No wonder I get onto the abandoned raft down at the beach, push through the waves and let it carry me out to sea, heading…
