The door suddenly slammed shut. I expected it from my teenage daughter, but not from my wife. I imagined greater maturity, but should have known better. After every argument, Kelly’s inner child emerged and fuelled her fury.

Five glasses of champagne from the prestigious vineyard in Tuscany didn’t help calm her nerves when I confessed our stocks had crashed, that we had lost everything, and were now broke. I’d never seen a woman’s face turn so red.

Tonight’s bravado confirmed my suspicions. Kelly loved only my money, and now that she’d bled the well dry, our marriage was over. I knew she’d never take accountability for urging me to delve into the stock market, and she has proved me right before I barely got the words out.

Before racing from the room, she warned me not to follow her, so I didn’t. But I knew what she was up to. I…
