“My cat, Huey, has always been strange,” I asserted, after Martha pointed out that my curious tuxedo enjoyed talking to himself. In her eyes, Huey’s mews were untranslatable. What would she say if she knew he spoke in riddles?

That afternoon, after Martha’s retreat, I turned to Huey and said, “My dearest feline. Must you draw attention to yourself?”

“What do you call a male father cat with no claws?”

I looked at him suspiciously. “I don’t know,” I conceded.

“A paw-paw.”

He flicked his tail in my face before dashing away. The next time I saw him, his white fur was covered in scarlet powder.

“Huey, where have you been?”

“What do you call a book-loving cat who’s covered in rust?”
